Nintendo's last cart playing machine i for one was sad to see the end of the cart era. A good system with some really good games and some really poor ones. Awesome controller apart from the fragile analog stick, i have had to buy countless pads over the years. All in all another must have nintendo system but not the best they have too offer. If you decide to buy one you have to buy Mario world 64 for me the best platform game available on any format.

The N64.... A Classic, Not a Stoneage Relic
Review created: 06/01/07
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

If you have ever bought something that says "Plug and Play" on it, spent 4 hours trying to make the darn thing work and then when it does it wasn't what you wanted......

THE N64 IS NONE OF THAT!

In 2007 this console was classed as retro, but 10 years ago it was THE best console you could get on the market. I know people will dispute that the Playstation was far superior, and in some aspects there is an argumant there, however, let me list what the N64 has to offer:

* Excellent Graphics, chunky, but fun and colourful!
* Excellent Game Play, Platformers eat your heart out!
* Excellent Games, who hasn't heard of Zelda? It all kicked off from here!
* An easy to use controller.
* A sold state cartridge, no scratched discs like the PS.
* A Re-writeable cartridge, memory cards not always required.
* Four way gaming from the outset, no need to buy controller splitters.

And then there's the games! From the classics to the cop outs, the N64 offers a wide variety of styles from Sports, Adventure, RPG, Racing, Kid proof gaming, Puzzling, and last but not least, Platform come 3D adventure gaming.

There are many more styles to suit everyone, and if I were to list some of the 200+ games available, I would be sure to insult someone by missing one out.

Things to bear in mind if buying from scratch:

* PAL is the UK and Europe Standard, NTSC is American, and Jap- Japanese.
* The N64 units will only play Their make of cart, unless using a converter.
* Extra controllers can be expensive - try to buy new, no sloppy sticks!
* Boxed games are always nice, but you don't PLAY with the box!

If you haven't guessed yet, I love these systems and wouldn't want an updated version, better graphics, stereo surround sound all singing all dancing, look at me I'm brilliant! console for the earth.

In short, N64's - solid, sturdy, good clean fun and, well, FUN!

Enjoy.

great console 100s of cheap games on ebay for it. The graphics are not bad especially when you look at consoles of the same age and slightly before it the n64 stands on its own and untill the wii it was nintendos best console.

  The Nintendo that never was
Review created: 02/09/08

I can't review it because I never got it. It is supposed to be lost in transit or so I was told. The appeals system for some unknown reason would not let me escillate the claim stating that I had not entirely filled the section to escillate to a claim (which I had) and so I'm at the loss of my money. POOR is a rating too good for what I think. This is my second time to get stiffed on e-bay.
The reason I wanted to but it in the first place was for a child's present.
Sorry I'm off the beaten track a little but there is very little else I can do!

  N64... bringing back the youth!
Review created: 26/08/08

Anyone reading this must know that the Nintendo 64 is a classic piece of gaming history. I sold mine a few years ago, but playing Goldeneye multiplayer at a friend's house which rekindled my passion for the console. With the deals available on ebay you'll won't have any reason not to get yourself one. I got mine along with the classics - Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda:Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie. You literally don't need anything other than that!

  Nintendo 64, Still a classic!
Review created: 23/07/08

The Nintendo 64, often abbreviated as N64, was Nintendo's third home video game console for the international market. At the time it was a revolution in the console market, 64 bit processing and for being the first modern home console to come with a controller featuring an analog stick.
One of the major components in the system was the memory, also known as RAM. The Nintendo 64 was the first console to implement a unified memory subsystem, instead of having separate banks of memory for CPU, audio, and video. The memory itself consists of 4 MiB of RAMBUS RDRAM (expandable to 8 MiB with the Expansion Pak) with a 9-bit data bus at 500 MHz providing the system with 562.5 MB/s peak bandwidth. RAMBUS was quite new at the time and offered Nintendo a way to provide a large amount of bandwidth for a relatively low cost. The narrow bus makes board design easier and cheaper than the higher width data buses required for high bandwidth out of slower-clocked RAM types (such as VRAM or EDO DRAM). However RDRAM, at the time, came with a very high access latency, and this caused grief for the game developers because of limited hardware performance.
Nintendo 64 games were ROM cartridge based. Cartridge size varied from 4 MiB (32 Mbit) to 64 MiB (512 Mbit) Some of the cartridges included internal EEPROM or battery-backed-up RAM for saved game storage. Otherwise game saves were put onto a separate memory card, marketed by Nintendo as a Controller Pak.
The selection of the cartridge for the Nintendo 64 was a key factor in Nintendo's being unable to retain its dominant position in the gaming market. Most of the cartridge's advantages did not manifest themselves prominently and they were ending up nullified by the cartridge's shortcomings, which turned off customers and developers alike. Especially for the latter, it was costly and difficult to develop for ROM cartridges, as their limited storage capacity constrained the game's content.
The N64 secured its share of the mature audience thanks to GoldenEye 007, Nightmare Creatures, Perfect Dark, Doom 64, Resident Evil 2, Shadow Man, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Duke Nukem 64, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, Mortal Kombat 4, and Quake II.
The Nintendo 64 game library included a number of critically acclaimed and widely sold games. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was critically acclaimed on release and has come top of many polls for best game ever. Super Mario Kart 64 was the system's best selling title (selling over eleven million copies) and also received praise from critics. 1997's GoldenEye 007, was nominated by Marc Russo as one of the greatest games of all time, and, in his words, remains "to this day . . . the finest game I've ever played across any platform or genre." Its release was exclusive to the Nintendo 64 system.
all in all The N64 could best be described as an all time classic games console.

Great console, reminds me of my childhood
Review created: 18/07/08

I opened the box to the good old "retro" N64, it brought out the kid inside me again, played on it for hours on end the night i got it like i did as a small child when i first got it.

I don't feel that it is "retro" it's still outclassing all of the new "better" consoles hands down with its colourful blocky characters and its funny, elegant story lines to each games.

I bought it originally for my little sister as a present so she could play it with me and we could have fun on one of the old consoles, she has all the new stuff: DS, PS3 etc... but i thought this would be much better seeing as she is quite young, colourful blocky fun is still all the rage it seems, she was wary at first but after 10 minutes i couldn't pull her away from it.

Best buy i ever made, will be looking for all of the classic games over ebay in the coming weeks to relive my childhood again.

* * * * * star console, unbeatable on all levels.

  NINTENDO 64 With 007 GOLDENEYE
Review created: 07/07/08
by:
smyly123 ( 4 )

This old school console is class and i used to have one as a kid. Unfortunatly i never really got the point of many games and ended up running around aimlessly shooting the badies. I purchased this again to relive my misspent youth on the classic game goldeneye, what a difference it is to play it and actually understand the point in the game. it really is top class and actually quite an in depth game and when you get your eyes to adjust to the TV without HD you really lose yourself in it. i am now trying to track down other games that i used to play to hopefully get the same feeling as i do playing 007.
N64 Retro Gaming at its best!!!

  Nintendo across the years
Review created: 18/06/08
by:

I had a sudden urge to revisit the games I used to enjoy playing with my son. I havn't seen any better games than Nintendo's over the years and the nostalgia is good too. When my son visits we can still enjoy the games, which is handy as I am not interested in talking about football, that great generation gap closer.

Nintendo 64 Console - The Ultimate
Review created: 04/05/08

The nintendo 64 has been around for donkeys years, and has recently seen a rise in prices which was expected i think by many. This console has pioneered some of the "Greatest" games ever. The classics:

Goldeneye
Mario Kart
Diddy king racing

Get 4 of your mates round, and it is the best console around. Maybe the graphics aren't hi-def or whatever, but this game truly brings alive the games. The graphics and blocky and colourful, with great soundtracks to all game. Myabe once in a while it freezes and crashes but heck you'll love it.

Note: Make sure UK people get Pal, and US/Japan get NTSC

Possibly one of the most under-rated consoles ever...
Review created: 01/05/08

To put it simply, the Nintendo 64 is just another classic Nintendo Console, it's up there with the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the GameBoy series. Although, many like to dismiss the console as a failure due to the relatively poor sales in comparison to the PlayStation 1 and 2, and lack of third party exclusive titles most of the truly exceptional games of that generation were missed out on by a lot of people and gamers alike.
Mario 64,
Pilotwings,
Goldeneye,
Perfect Dark,
Lylat Wars
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Zelda: Ocarina Of Time & Majora's Mask
WWF: No Mercy,
just to name but a few of the AAA titles the vast majority of the people haven't heard of, and are yet so amazing, it was for that reason alone I decided to re-purchase the N64. I stupidly sold my original years ago to buy my first PC (worth the trade, but regret losing all my games) and I wanted to get back into touch with my retro side ans that's what the N64 provides.
Only thing that annoys me about the N64 (It did then, and it still does now) is that 4mb Expansion Pack you're required to buy to play some of the games properly, it's still difficult to find for under £20 and that amount of money for 4mb, having a laugh. o_O'
But other than that, it's all just pure retro glory. I'd recommend it to anyone who's heavily into FPS' and good adventure games. Not going to try and recommended it to current GameCube/Wii owners just because if they're any kind of Nintendo fan, they should or at least have owned one at some point so I'm looking towards mainly the Sony/Sega crowd. Anyone who enjoyed the PlayStation, 2 generations ago, go back and try this console, and just check out on what you missed out on. You won't regret it.
