A good system with some really good games and some really poor ones. Awesome controller apart from the fragile analog stick, i have had to buy countless pads over the years. All in all another must have nintendo system but not the best they have too offer. If you decide to buy one you have to buy Mario world 64 for me the best platform game available on any format. If you have ever bought something that says "Plug and Play" on it, spent 4 hours trying to make the darn thing work and then when it does it wasn't what you wanted...... THE N64 IS NONE OF THAT! In 2007 this console was classed as retro, but 10 years ago it was THE best console you could get on the market. I know people will dispute that the Playstation was far superior, and in some aspects there is an argumant there, however, let me list what the N64 has to offer: * Excellent Graphics, chunky, but fun and colourful! * Excellent Game Play, Platformers eat your heart out! * Excellent Games, who hasn't heard of Zelda? It all kicked off from here! * An easy to use controller. * A sold state cartridge, no scratched discs like the PS. * A Re-writeable cartridge, memory cards not always required. * Four way gaming from the outset, no need to buy controller splitters. And then there's the games! From the classics to the cop outs, the N64 offers a wide variety of styles from Sports, Adventure, RPG, Racing, Kid proof gaming, Puzzling, and last but not least, Platform come 3D adventure gaming. There are many more styles to suit everyone, and if I were to list some of the 200+ games available, I would be sure to insult someone by missing one out. Things to bear in mind if buying from scratch: * PAL is the UK and Europe Standard, NTSC is American, and Jap- Japanese. * The N64 units will only play Their make of cart, unless using a converter. * Extra controllers can be expensive - try to buy new, no sloppy sticks! * Boxed games are always nice, but you don't PLAY with the box! If you haven't guessed yet, I love these systems and wouldn't want an updated version, better graphics, stereo surround sound all singing all dancing, look at me I'm brilliant! console for the earth. In short, N64's - solid, sturdy, good clean fun and, well, FUN! Enjoy. Review ID: 10000000002669419 Was this review helpful? I look back on the N64 with very fond memories, so much so that i recently purchased one on Ebay and am now chasing all my old favorites. The N64 had 64 bit graphics, expandable memory, four controller ports, memory cards and rumble packs along with what i believe is the best designed controller ever. Include titles such as: Pilotwings, Blast corps, Goldeneye, Perfect dark, Mario 64, Lylat wars ( i could go on for a while ) and you have the perfect package. History: With SONY developing their first console ( and using the technology from the shelved SNES cd rom ), NIntendo continued to develop the N64 sticking with the cartridge rather than following the trend that was the cd rom. Nintendo probably didn't take much notice of the sleeping giant that was the Playstation, due to their dominance of the video games market from 1985 - 95 and thinking they were infallible. The Playstation was the machine to have with 32 bit graphics, cd quality sound, memory cards, cd playing function and not forgetting rock solid launch titles that remain classics today. So the N64 was launched and although it sold better than the SEGA Saturn, went largely unnoticed under the Playstation shadow. Unfortunately due to the N64's mediocre success, Nintendo stumbled into the fourth generation with their Gamecube and lost more ground. The N64 can be bought for peanuts now and there are tons of secondhand games available. The games have 'weathered' rather well and great fun can be had, especially four player Lylat wars, goldeneye and mario kart. If you are getting bored with the stagnant generation we are currently living in and you need something to pull you back in, then it is well worth a look.
