Nikon has done it again with the D700

I am a wedding photographer and have just invested in a D700. I am utterly amazed by this camera its performance at high ISO is unbelievable, I still find myself taking pictures of junk around the house at ISO 3200 just so I can blow them up on my screen to try and find noise.
I have completed two weddings since buying it last week and I haven't used my flash, even in dark and dingy churches. Just take the time go to a shop and ask to have a look at one of these cameras. whack up the ISO and then magnify the picture on the rear screen. If you don't walk out with one (even if you are a canon user) then you must be mad!

It is a very intuitive camera to use especially if you have upgraded from the D300 as basically it is the same layout.

The viewfinder is bright and crisp and its really nice to see a full frame view compared to an APS sized sensor DSLR - the only slight drawback is you get a 95% view and not 100%. It is top heavy with the bigger prism but this doesn't affect the handling in anyway, you only notice the extra dimensions when switching from landscape to portrait.

It is solidly built (makes canons look like plastic toys)only being let down by a return to the slide and open CF door rather than the spring loaded switch version as seen on the D300.

A genius decision by Nikon to use the same grip and batteries as the D300 as it avoids costly upgrading of equipment when switching or using alongside as I am now doing.

Some neat touches include the rubber sync covers attached to the camera body, the Liveview function and a novel virtual horizon detector which shows you on the back screen whether or not your shot is level - it also has the built in viewfinder blanket for long exposures.

Be mindful that in order to download the pictures into older versions of photoshop you will need to update software. Adobe DNG convertor 4.5 covers the process of RAW NEF files and will prevent you having to buy NX2 or CS3 this is a free download on the net.

Cost wise you can get these for as little as £1685 now which is £315 less than they were 2 months ago!!

Jessops and Warehouse Express do buy now pay next year on 0% as well.

I have a D300 and whilst I am using them alongside each other the D700 kicks it utterly into touch especially with its noise control and full frame sensor. Even the colours are that much better. Also you get the added bonus of getting a shallower depth of field with the full frame which on 2.8 and lower lenses gives awesome effects.

Just go and buy one!

I recently jumped ship from Canon to Nikon for a few reasons:

a. 1D MK III was really getting on my nerves, ever since I upgraded from MK II.
b. The new 5D MK II packed an inferior focus system (less advanced than 50D) put me right off, no real advantage besides pixel count, which to me means a new PC, more memory and much bigger hard drive and never ending backup disks.
d. Nikon CLS system simply rocks, Canon's is just bone idle.
e. Get your hands on a 14-24mm and tell me you don't want one.
f. The launch of DxoMark sensor report sealed the deal there and then.
g. Plus a few emailing and chat with recent converted pros.
h. And of course, I worked out switching system wouldn't cost me much overall.

Low light performance is amazing right up to ISO 6400. Forget the tripod! Forget the flash (except for fill)! Handling is superb, works like a D3 but smaller and lighter. Best value full frame camera available.

  Excellent ISO image quality

I own a D200 which is great camera, but has poor high ISO problems. Images at 1600 look awful.......not a problem with the D700.

I got work to purchase one and I love it. Feels like a pro camera, solidly built. I used it last weekend at a wedding and the shots I took inside the church were great.

I'd suggest getting the grip with the correct rechargeable batteries (cant remember what brand I purchased) you can shoot up to 8fps.

If I could afford one I'd buy it, and maybe I still will and sell the D200.

Maybe wait a few months and see the price drop again. One thing I will say is compared to some other cameras the megapixel is quite low, but that's the price you get when wanting superior image quality. Its all about what your taking the pictures for, how you will be displaying them. 12.1 is way enough for me :)
