The best camera i have ever used. You simply cannot go wrong with it.

Prints up to and beyond A3. Stunning pictures all the time. Simple to upgrade the firmware. Go to Nikons website to check for latest edition.

We did consider upgrading to the D80, But we feel there isnt enough benefit. Sure the D80 has a bigger viewing screen which is nice, And sure its got more pixels, But you just wont notice the difference. Unless you are a profesional photographer that is.

The good points: Everything.

The bad points: Huge manual. More functions on it than i know what to do with. Flash is a bit weak.

Must have accessory. SB600 or SB800 flash gun. Set them up remotely and have fun. Fish eye lens.

Next purchase : An 18-70 Nikon lens, Using the 28-80 and fish eye lenses, reveals that there is a gap between them that needs filling in.

D70 - Everything you actually need in a camera?

It's the Nikon D70 and it is as good as they say it is!

See it as a tool which takes photographs and if used with enough intent, has the ability to make you a far better photographer with enough room to help your skills grow and grow. Furthermore, it feels great in the hand while doing it. It's really ergonomic amd heavy enough to feel like it will withstand daily bumps and knocks while still feeling comfortable.

The pictures great. The feel of taking them...Even better.

Taking everything into consideration. After using one for over a year the only criticism I can make is that it doesn't have dust eliminating methods but trust me when I say it's far easier to clean off dust than led to believe.

Using the D70 professionally two+years on
Review created: 24/07/08(updated 24/07/08)
by:

I have used the D70 for three years now in a multitude of conditions and locations all producing very good results.
The body is good at the price point and will not give cause for concern if treated with respect.
I have found the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX NIKKOR an extremely versatile lens. It is well worth the money giving such fantastic versatility.
With this setup you will be able to shoot most things and come away with outstanding results! If you don’t it will be your fault not the kit.
Faults: None really at the price point, observations Body a little flimsy + it would benefit from a little better environmental sealing. Shutter I am told can suffer from ware but I have done 18000 shots with no problems.
Conclusion: Excellent value for money at the full retail let alone second hand. I am still using the camera in certain environments where I don’t wish to take more expensive gear.24/08/08.

  Nikon D70 Body only
Review created: 08/06/08

The camera was purchased for my daughter as a back up for te D70 she has had for three years. She is a photographic student and hopes to have a career with it.
Her camera developed a fault which took the Nikon repair company nearly three months to repair. She is very satisfied with the cameras performance but the after sales service is not what you would expect.

Nikon D70 Digital SLR Camera, Pros and Cons
Review created: 13/05/08(updated 13/05/08)
by:

Pros:
- Six Megapixels is enough for an A3 size print.
- It will takes most of the AF, AFD and AFS lens. On some newer Nikon DSLR (D40, D40x, D60), autofocus will only work on an AFS lens (not AF/AFD. The option to use Nikon AF/AFD lenses will save you lots of money for buying lenses. AFS lenses are more expensive compared to its AF/AFD equivalent. The advantage of an AFS lens are: a) quicker autofocus, b) more silent (less noise), c) there are some VR (vibration reduction) variant of this lens.
- It has a remote flash commander mode, you can use the SB-600/SB-800 as a remote flash.
- It supports Nikon CLS (creative lighting system) using i-TTL mode, fully compatible with SB-600/SB-800 flash.
- It has 2 command dials (one at the front, one at the back, compared to D50 which only has 1 command dial), gives you quicker access to change apperture/shutter speed.
- You can use an optional infrared remote shutter release ML-L3, or you can get the cheaper 3rd party (china copy) for only a fiver. (Fuji S2-pro or Nikon D100 use a cable release, not infrared)
- It has a DOF (depth of field) preview button (D50 doesn't have).
- It has a backlight on its top LCD, usefull for viewing the top LCD menu at dark environment (D50 doesn't have).
- The price is quite cheap compared to its capability. The price range is approximatelly equal to Nikon D50, Nikon D100 and Fuji S2 Pro.

Cons:
- Will not meter if used with the old Nikon manual focus lens or non-CPU lens. You have to do the metering manually using a handheld lightmeter.
- It doesn't have dedicated battery grip/vertical shutter release (compared to D100 which has an optional MB-D100)

Standard accessories:
- Hotshoe cover BS-1, LCD cover BM-4, eyepiece cover DK-5 (usefull to prevent stray light affecting the image when using the remote shutter release or timer), rubber eyecup, video cable, USB connection cable, Nikon EN-EL3/EN-EL3a battery, Nikon MH-18a battery charger, Nikon Picture project CD, User manuals.

  Nikon D70 body
Review created: 07/05/08
by:

I brought the D70 body second hand in a non working condition. After researching some of the known problems i was convinced that the problem was the dreaded green flashing light of death! If this was the case then Nikon would repair the problem without charge(even though the camera is at least 3 years old).
Luckily this was the case and Nikon certainly delivered with a free repair and clean up.
I take my hat off to Nikon(Kingston) for their excellent all round speed and quality service and am now the proud owner of an excellent camera.

  Nikon D70s from ebay
Review created: 05/05/08(updated 26/09/08)

By far the best digital camera I have owned and used to date. I coupled it with a Sigma 18 - 20mm lens and it will do just about anything I want to do with photography. It will be taking a trip around the world later this year.
+++++ Brilliant high resolution photographs with so much assistance from the camera.
----- Rather time consuming to get started initially with all the functions to learn. (beginner)

September 08: The D70s has now been around the world and has rewarded me with some absolutely stunning photos of rainforest scenes (waterfalls, Orchids etc.)landscapes, mountain views and friends and family portraits as well as spontainious pics. I had expected to get good photos with the D70s after recommendations from coleagues but it far outdid all expectations. I don't think I will ever have need any other camera.

  D70 classic
Review created: 16/04/08

This is still a classic. It does what the newer cameras do but a lot cheaper. Mega pixals? well this is a 6.5 but in ophotoshop you can tweek it to 15mp and so on. Every digital camera cannot match film quality as yet. Untill they bring out a 30mp camera and upwards stick to a basic quality one like the Nikon D70. Dont get taken in with the hype of newer cameras unless you want to shoot 5-10 frames per second otherwise D&) is the daddy.

  Nikon D70 Body
Review created: 09/03/08
by:

Bought this because I was fed up with sending mine to Nikon for dust removal.
I have a 55-200 lens so now both lens have a body permanently attached.
Looked at selling my original and buying maybe an Olympus 510, however, this is a much poorer camera.

  D70 once more please
Review created: 04/02/08

I'm user of D70 for 2 years. First one was in poor condition (about 40.000 shots when bought).
The D70 I purchased month ago in nearly the same price is like new (3.000 shots). Everything in this model matches my needs. No more than 6megapixel is needed to print up to 24x30cm or publish in the web keeping short time of postprocessing. I always work on NEF - raw data. I'd give up if I have to wait twice processing twice number of megapixels (12mpix cameras).
Only one thing: brighter viewfinder would make me even more happy using D70.
I'm interested in family, landscape and animals photography using 3 different lenses - so dSLR is mandatory.

  Couldn't ask for more ...

Bought second hand, worried I had paid too much but I hadn't. Manual a bit too 'all encompassing' and the camera doesn't need all the bells and whistles provided. Excellent images, easy to use when you ignore the 'destruction book', first rate. D80 doesn't offer enough to make the extra purchase worth while!
Thoroughly recomended.

  Great secondhand buy!
Review created: 05/10/07
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought the D70 secondhand as a backup camera body. I have to say that it fits the bill perfectly. My main digital SLR is a Fujifilm Finepix S5 Pro which is great for fantastic pictures, but it is also quite bulky and heavy when you just want to go out for the day and take a camera with you "just in case".

The Nikon is great to use and the only thing that changed much between the handling of the D70 and the D80 was the size of the display. The D70 has the older 1.8" display which looks tiny by today's standards but it is clear. Of course there are the differences in the number of megapixels, but don't let that tempt you to splash out loads more cash. The number of pixels is harldy important unless you want to print at sizes larger than A3. You will see loads of stuff in magazines about the fact that you should never be printing at less than 180-200 ppi for good prints, which is true if you always look at your prints from two inches away with a magnifying glass, which no one does! I have prints on my wall that are 20 x 30 and were taken with a 5 megapixel camera and they look absolutely great!

If you are looking for a first digital SLR then the Nikon D70 will do you proud and it will take most Nikon lenses made since around 1959 without adaptors! OK so you won't have autofocus with the manual focus lenses and you may not get auto exposure with the older ones either, but they are cheap to pick up and doing things manually really does improve your photography dramatically as it makes you think about what you are doing!

  Nikon slow repairs
Review created: 09/07/07
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Not an excellent camera but good when it works- back up service from Nikon when it goes wrong is terrible- takes weeks to have repairs carried out. Although i have all the lens,s - i am seriously considering changing to another make because of it going wrong (twice in 3 years) and their slow repair time.

Great to use both as an entry level aswell as a regular photographer. Price at the moment is also very good due to the new releases of the d80 and D200. Good time to buy. Software on the camera and pc is also very easy to use , providing You with a great alround product.

The Nikon d70 is as good as all the hype. I have printed files bigger than A3 (as big as my Epson goes) and they have looked fantastic.

The camera handles like a dream and battery life is truly amazing even with much reviewing on the very clear colour monitor on the back.

This will work as a point and shoot but will reward any user willing to put the effort in to get the best out using A,S or manual settings. Its capable of making stunning images, buy a book on understanding light to go with it.

Dam good camera. Worth every penny i paid for it which i got as new not long after they came out. The only reason i would get rid is to move up to a bigger and better DSLR and if i need some extra money to put towards a new camera.

Just right to buy now - do it

It seems to be old hat now, but this 4 year old camera is excellent, and a great first step into DSLR systems. everything works well, and its as easy to use as any compact if you want it to be, but because of the larger sensor and quality lenses, the results are so much better !
Go on dive in - I picked up mine for £200 ! and am using it with mainly 10 year old AF lenses - you can't go wrong.
