  Nikon D50 - a little gem!

I've had my D50 for about 18 months or so. I own quite a few DSLRs, and the D50 appealed on account of its small size. As a 6mp camera it has, of course, been superceded. But, in terms of image quality, it more than holds its own against bigger/better models. It produces very sharp images, and gives nice colour. I often find a little contrast boost helpful, and then the results look punchy and saturated, yet natural and realistic. I've compared my D50 to the Nikon D60, D200, Fuji S5 Pro, Canon 40D, Sony a700, Oly e500 and 510, and reckon it produces results that are every bit as good. The higher mp cameras are perhaps a tad sharper in terms of fine detail, but even on a 8x12 print it can be very hard to tell. The D50 has one feature that I find very useful; an unusually high flash sync speed of 1/500th. Only the D40 offered something similar (though not the D40x), and it is useful for those wanting to use daylight fill-flash for portraits. I recently bought a D60 with a view to selling the D50, but having compared results I'm not so sure I want to part with the older camera - it might be the D60 that ends up being sold! The D60 is nice, but it's only usable with motorised lenses, whereas the D50 works with any AF Nikkor. I find the D50 consistent and reliable in terms of exposure and focus, and have used it in situations (Weddings) where I needed a camera that could produce great results in less than ideal lighting. Battery life is phenomenal too.

NikonD50. Best bet 2nd user Dslr currently available

DANGER NOT FOR PEOPLE WITH ADDICTIVE PERSONALITIES...(you'll be hooked)
I have rated this camera as good only because it's excellence has been bettered by later models.
If you are looking at this camera you might also be considering the d40 or d40x
I am not entirely sure of the all the differences between the two so cannot really comment other than to say that there are strengths and weaknesses to both, and from a broad gamut of reviews I have read I was lead to believe the D50 outweighs by far the functionality of the D40 and competes well with the D40x.It is worth remembering that while the D40 obviously has more pixels10.2 as opposed to 6.1,the d40 was devised to fit budget wise between the d50 and d80.
For a better comparison of both cameras it might well be worth you looking at this site http://www.dpreview.com This an excellent comparison site.
My personal experience is from a photo-hobbyists point of view.
My D50 exceeded my expectations from the moment if freed it from the box.
For those new to digital slr photography it is worth noting the importance of pixel/print ratio. The 6.1mp of the D50 will give great 8x10's and dependant of the quality of the capture can handle even larger print formats.
Also worth remembering is that any camera is only as good as it's glass and while the kit lens's are competent they are not exceptional .The 18-55 is above average while I found the 70-300g lens a let down, better to find the 70-300D which unlike the G range has an aperture adjuster on the barrel and markedly better optics.
As mentioned in other reviews the D50 will take most nikon lenses with some losing auto functions if not wired for AF etc,but isn't manual what photography is all about?
If you are not adept with manual functions or prefer the ease of auto settings the D50 has this adequately covered with a full menu of options ,easily accessed by a dial on top.
The D50 does not offer DOFP if you dont know what it is you wont miss it.
The long battery life and Sd card make it cost effective too.
I have taken many pleasing pictures with my D50 and in fact rekindled my photographic spirit to obsessive proportions.
As I said in my title I would easily rank this as probably the best second user dslr available when you compare price/function/quality Overall.
This is just a users impression but take a look and see just how many second users are available, the D50 is a keeper for sure.
Unfortunately I had to let mine go to fund a more recent model.
As a first DSLR you cant go wrong and as back up body it will make the grade.
Remember this is an entry grade Dslr so you wont be taking that billboard shot just yet, but trust me many can and do make a successful living with this piece of equipment.Great for weddings and standard portraits and equally capable on auto as a happy snapper!
If you worked with film before the cost explosion, relight the magic lantern with the D50.
You'll be more than glad you did.

  Nikon D50 Body Only - Avoid 18-55mm!
Review created: 25/08/08

Bought as a gap-filler until I could afford a D200. Wish I'd kept it as a back-up body, because it is SUPERB! My wife still has hers, though, so if needs must...

But then I haven't been let down by my D200 yet!

The 18-55mm lens (that also came with the basic kit) is poor, IMHO: the barrel distortion was HIGHLY evident when photographing the Acropolis in Athens, and I had to borrow the wife's 18-70mm lens to get the shots I wanted! Guess what? My next purchase was an 18-70!

Buy it; you WON'T regret it!

I brought this camera to supplement my existing Canon EOS 350D and Pentax K 100D Super.

Of the three cameras I have to say this is my least favourite, build quality is very good but the camera has an antiquated feel and appearance.

My biggest criticism of this camera is the lack of metering support for older lenses and lenses used with adapters, which I use extensively. Both the Canon and Pentax bodies offer at least some metering availability.

Image output is fine and speed of performance good, but for me the lack of versatility is a letdown.

D50: Brilliant camera and great value for money!
Review created: 26/07/08(updated 26/07/08)

I've used the D50 quite a bit and it's a brilliant camera! Good as a beginner's digital SLR with great features.

Reasons why I bought one:
- Larger camera with better grip than D40/D60
- Has an auto-focus motor so doesn't need newer motorised lenses like the D40/D60 do
- Brilliant!
- Cheaper than it should be since Nikon have stopped making it

Cons:
- Only 6 MPixel, but good enough for A3 @ 150 dpi (4.3 MP)
- Screen is not as bright or large as newer models like D80 and D60

Overall, very good value for money and more comfortable to hold.

  My Nikon D50
Review created: 10/07/08

I bought this camera on the advice of a friend who is a photo guru, as I was looking to just replace my small girlie compact with a smaller even girlier compact, ideally in pink!

I have been using Nikons for quite a few years now, and have really liked them. But with my last one I was getting really disappointed about shot quality in dim lighting, indoors, the effect of the flash etc. I was just losing loads of potentially great shots because they just weren't coming out right.

I bought the D50 with a nagging that it was gonna be cumbersome etc, but now it's here I wouldn't change it for the world!!

I have a 50mm 1.8 lens and a starter zoom lens, I think 18-55mm, which I am quickly outgrowing! The 50mm gives me great portraits, great indoor/dim light photos, WITHOUT THE FLASH and they are so warm and deep and crisp.

I was told, but never believed it like now, that you can't beat a DSLR with a compact. But now I am a firm believer, and could never swap back to a compact!

It's not a hard camera to learn, so I'd recommend it for beginners like me, but I reckon you could probably stick with it for a while as it performs wonderfully.

Only downsides, although perhaps I just haven't found out how yet, are I miss being able to take videos, which all my compacts did, and I haven't yet been able to work out if I am able to take b&w/sepia etc shots....if anyone knows that let me know!!

Otherwise, HIGHLY recommended

excellent picture quality, holds its own against more expensive models,
easy to use and makes a good first time user camera.

but: mine broke down just after the warrenty ran out and had to be replaced - not good for a camera of this price and from such a good name, maybe I was unlucky

My original nickin D50 was robust and user friendly but sadly it met its end in a firework accicident and i needed a quick replacement finding this little gem with a buy it now option at a reasonable price was just what i was looking for & as it was the same make as my damaged one all my lens's would fit..This was an excellent buy and arrived quickly .i would recommend the Nikon D50 to any intermediate photographer who wants a camera that takes good quality photos with the options of a professional camera but still likes the point and shoot options. The photo quality can be set low usable for newsletters WebPages personal use ect or at it highest photos are can be enlarged & are of suitable quality to sell if you wanted to ..

  You'll Just Love It

Worth every penny of £485 that i paid for mine back in 2006! i sold my 18-55mm kit lens and bought an 18-70mm (probably one of Nikons best ever lenses) results were stunning, if you don't do super enlargments (larger than 3' by 5') then you don't need anymore than 6 megapixels anyway, and don't fall for the 'pixel count one upmanship and sales modes of newer models' then you will never look back after buying one of these.
I fell for the much overladen and over weight D200 and often wondered why i bothered! Absolutely supperb and very well made, get one of these and a decent lense and you'll have a wry grin on your face all day when you see others with more expensive but ultimately no better kit.

  Red's D50

As an Ex. photojournalist this was the first Digital SLR I purchased. It is excellent, easy to use, plenty of settings and like all Nikon's you can use any Nikon lens no matter how old. The 'Auto' setting is particularly good. Recently I photographed the 'Red Arrows' and using a non digital 170-500mm lens, hand held, all the photos came out sharp and clear. I recommend this camera to anyone who wants a medium priced digital camera.
