if your looking for a small yet great SLR this is it!
the Nikon D40X, the ten megapixel follow-on from the D40.
As well as another four megapixels the D40X also features faster continuous shooting (three frames per second) and a lower base sensitivity of ISO 100. Delivering a compact digital SLR with a ten megapixel sensor means the D40X is aimed squarely at the Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTi). fantastic

Having tried a friends Nikon D40x
I was hooked, my Olympus E10 is a nice bit of kit, but so slow to react and store or review photos.
The Nikon is so far fulfilling my expectations, with it's almost instant initiation, and it's point and shoot auto mode giving good results.
I have yet to explore all the functions available.
Another reason for buying was:
Having seen test pictures from Canon & Nikon lenses supplied as standard, the 18/55 that came with it appears to give a better result..
So far the pictures I have taken are very clean with good detail and faithful colour.
The large LCD gives excellent viewing of the captured photos, but I do fear it might be a bit prone to bumps and scratches, so I need to source a screen protection cover.
I like the auto flash that activates when the cameras decides, and the options are available to change it's mode of function..like almost everything else on the camera.
I prefer the auto focus to be set for the center sensor, leaving it to pick multi zone tends to pick up near objects off center, rendering the distant object as least important.
One minor niggle, nothing wrong with the camera..just Nikon's NEF format.
I would like to work with the raw files the 10 meg sensor gives. the option is available to store data as NEF, or various size JPEG's
Their supplied programs will read the format, but there are only minimal adjustments for the photos, it's not an editing suite.
My older Photoshop programs wont read NEF files, and so far I can't work on these files without having to reinvest in another editing suite.
But the JPEG option on the camera does give a good quality and small file, thankfully.. as I have requirements of a minimum pixel count of 2500 on the shortest side of the frame, and saved as JPEG..

The D40x is the upgrade to the D40 - improvements? The 6 megapixel sensor is replaced by a 10.2 CCD, providing more detail in photos. Not only that, the processing speeds have been stepped up, providing 3fps shooting speed.
These differences are definitely worth the money. I found the D40 responsive and the D40x is even better, with instant start up times and minimal shutter lag - a true SLR experience. The body is identical to the D40 but this is not a drawback; the camera is ergonomical and comfortable to use, being the smallest DSLR on the market doesn't limit its capabilities. The D40x more than matches the likes of Canon's 400D in terms of image quality, and trumps it by far with its comfortable grip. Yes, some say the lack of dust reduction and in-body focus motors are major drawbacks, but if you consider the D40X has been aimed at entry level users you'd understand the lack of motors - simply because entry level users doen't own older Nikon lenses. As for dust reduction, most will agree it isn't highly effective and you can simulate its effects far better using a rocket blower (which I'd recommend).
Of course, this camera has now been replaced by the D60, which is identical to the D40x minus dust reduction and VR lens, which aren't phenominal improvements. So, in conclusion this camera is absolutely perfect for the entry level user or someone returning to SLR photography in digital form.

  Good camera at low price

I bought this camera 2 months ago because I wanted to take my first step in DSLR photography and learn some advanced techniques which cannot be done with simple point-and-shoot digital camera. And now, after two months have passed I found my purchase was appropriate and accurate.
What I like in this camera is big and precise LCD screen, very friendly user interface, programmable button, many photo editing and organising functions.
What are the disadvantages? Actually, I haven't yet encountered any issues that would be worth to call "disadvantage". As every camera, it also has its own little problems like ergonomics, but they're not so essential.
In conclusion - it is a great choice for beginner who wants to start practising in DSLR. In addition, D60 (D40x succeeder) is also goood camera with new functions for people who have a bigger budget. It's in the same starter class as D40x and is very similar to it.

The NIkon D40x is an amazing Digital SLR for photographers at all levels. It is easy to use and the quality of the photographs speak for themselves. I would recomend this camera over the Sony A200 any day.

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICES- & FAULTY EQUIPMENT

having spent well in excess of £300 for a Nikon D40X it arrived within about a week, the packaging used was poor, with no bubble wrap or anything used to protect the camera from an impact except the card board box.
Part of the package also inluded a memory card, this was ofound to be faulty, i have since left 3 messages with the seller asking whether i could arrange a replacement of the faulty card however i have had no response what so ever. i am very dissapointed with this seller and think it is an extremely poor way to treat customers, who have paid a substantial amount of money.

Very pleased with whole package as delivered. The wide range of photographic capability of this digital SLR system is a quantum leap forward on the small digital cameras I have prevously used, (and their limited levels of performance), also the ease of use is a pleasant surprise!

Summary of Nikon D40x plus two lenses
Review created: 09/04/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The camera itself is excellent to use and produces first class images in all modes. For those still learning it is very good for simple point and shoot. The particular package with two lenses with the D40X was very good value and since they are designed to work with the camera they are ideal. I was very pleased with the basic wide angle now available. Having used SLR's with film in the past (quaint notion now) things have moved on.

I would recommend this particular combination as being more than adequate for the average user. I am sure six months on some things will seem more limited, but that would be the same with any camera equipment. By the way the spare batteries are very cheap from the USA or HK so no need to worry about being caught out if you get too enthusiastic. I received an 8 Mb card as part of the deal and even on highest detail I can't get near to using all the capacity.

Enjoy your photography!!

Nikon D40x vs. Canon, Olympus, Sony, Small SLR
Review created: 15/06/09
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I based my decision to buy this camera on strong reviews from the excellent dpreview site and others. Obviously the main competition to this camera is the small Canon SLR's.

At the time the D40x was in production the Canon equivalent was the EOS 400d. Some reviewers will talk about the better feature list of the Canon or the minute discrepancies in picture quality at high sensitivities but most who put the Canon in front are not reviewing the Cameras as a package with the kit lenses. Most reviews will say the Nikon lens is superior to the Canon lens which for me gave the Nikon the edge.

With both cameras being tied on image quality, build quality was next on my list to judge. Nikon wins hands down on this and I don't think many (even Canon owners) would argue. Just pickup a Nikon and a Canon and you'll see what I mean. Personally I have had a bad experience with a Canon that lasted about a week beyond the warranty before never turning on again but have owned two twenty+ year old Nikons. I should add, however, that although my Nikon D40x (purchased on eBay recently) works perfectly and is in very good condition the focus ring on the kit lens feels flimsy to me and has a lot of play in it. This doesn't affect the operation of the camera in any way but it detracts from the quality feel of a Nikon camera and is slightly disappointing.

The other major factor that pushed me to plump for the Nikon was second hand price; the Canons are massively over priced on eBay. This may be down to the replacement to the baby Canon (the EOS 450d) being aimed at a higher price bracket than it's predecessor thus confusing second hand buyers. Whatever the cause, for the price of the excellent Nikon D40x on Ebay, you'd only be able to get the much older Canon EOS 350d (which is certainly an inferior camera).

So from the perspective of a second hand buyer the Nikon D40x offers much better value than the Canon's but what about the Sony A100 or Olympus small SLRs? Don't know is the honest answer. Both can be had for even less than the D40x. Both are without doubt better second hand buys than the Canon (due to inflated prices of second hand entry level Canon's on eBay) but some reviewers think Olympus and Sony picture quality is inferior to Nikon and Canon.

If you’re into features then I would certainly look at Sony and Olympus in more detail. If you want a straight forward, reliable, well made small SLR that can’t be faulted of picture quality than go for the Nikon. If you the Canon’s, buy a new one; the second hand price is ludicrous.

This is my first digital SLR but I have been a Film SLR and compact digital user for a long time.

I like the camera, it is intuitive in use, a good range of features , some of which are useful.

Some basics missing which is a shame, like D.O.F. pre-view anf the manual focus is not easy with such a narrow ring to use.

It is very nice to have the fast response of an SLR compared to a digital compact.

The kit lense is OK but the good lenses are expensive, and take the combined body and lens cost to quite a high amount

It is clearly the amateur market aimed for in features present and not present, but compared to the pricing of a pro camera I would say this camera is a good choice and I do not regret buying it.

I have already upgraded the standard lense to a VR model and it makes a real difference.

I have added an angle finder, macro lens, ring flash and a 55 to 200 zoom so I am all set to transition from film at last.

Pro Digital Photography with the Nikon D40X
Review created: 04/01/09

This is a lightweight pro camera. It has provenance. It is a Nikon.
It is simple to use anmd understand - one of the most user-friendly cameras I've come across. It is very forgiving.
Dislike only one thing - the fact that picture composition is via the eye piece only. I cannot display my picture composition on the screen PRIOR TO SHOOTING. But I knew that when I bought it.
This camera gets me back into quality photography because it trully is a real photographers camera. I haave had a compact Fuji 5000S for the past three years. Great little camera. x22 zoom. Very reliable but a bit restrictive. I had a Nikon F90X 35mm film camera prior to the Fuji.
Now I'm back into proper snapping again I guess that I will upgrade to the D90X within the next two years - or earlier.
I am trully having fun with my new toy - the Nikon D40X.
Buy one.

The D40x is very easy to use ,I paid a good bit of cash for mine from an indipendant camera store, the Lens package I got was the,18-135, most of my fellow users seem to have the 18-55, I also purchased theSR 400 flash , which gives off a great Bounce effect and sharper pictures ,this model which replaced the d40 is only under a year on the shelves ,then Nikon bring out the replacement d60x, this along with the hard fact getting a good macro Lens without paying £300 + other hard to get lenses ,Nikon has Let its faithful down very badly in this area , I think we should complain to Nikon to get more affordable d40x lenses on the market and not Leave us in the wilderness with such a great camera.

A really versatile camera, ideal for the first time SLR user. It can be used as a point and shoot or for the more specific types of photo'. I found the accompanying manual rather difficult to follow as there seemed to be a lot of page hopping involved. Once you have mastered the basics it's an easy camera to use, also a very popular one with good battery life. Should the need arise I would purchase another one without hesitation.
