The main problem is that eBay are asking me to review a product that I never recieved. It was offered by a fraudulent company in Germany which perported to be approved by eBay
eBay know all the details as thay shut down his membership and I received email from eBay Germany (in German)which I could not read.
They are not interested in pursuing crooks who use Ebay.
All they need to do is pass the information to the German police.
But they can't be bothered.
So best advise is DONT use Ebay.

Being a medium format user had to give way to digital for some assignments - have used others but prefer Nikon optics and do not like Fuji's lack of reliability and find that the colour rendition, saturation, speed of autofocus, ease of use, even the reasuring feel of the weight and build of this magnesium bodied camera reasuring.

Compare to say 12mp interpolated fuji S2 which is a 6+6mp camera which when used in raw produces a conversion into a tiff file and can then have the jpeg conversion via either their software of photoshop but try to open the raw in photoshop and all you get is a 6mb image. Considered the S3 but having had to scrap a two year old S2 and considering thet the earlier D100 was still going stond build yuality was a strong consideration.

In use the controls are slightly different to the earlier Nikons and Fujis but a few minutes and they due to their logical outlay become easy to use and once the results are sampled there is absolutly no contest.

Have attempted conversion of the raw image by several means especially when requiring larger quantities in batch where options are the software provided with the camera which although offing a working option is slow in use and capture is an additional option at over £120 which I have a copy of as well as CS2 from photoshop. I tried a further cheap option which cost sub £10.00 and being ever the pesemist thought would be worth a gamble and having tried it now use it as my first option that being tone up as found for sale on ebay.

If you require photos for resale and are tied into nikon lenses and can justify the premium price for a premium product then there is no contest.

A final thought is that if you are considering it inferior to the D2xs then why not gain the features of the later spec by upgrading the firmware which is available free from Nikons website.

Additional comment - now looking at D700 to back up Hasselblad digital backs. But for a storeybook Wedding album the D2x takes some beating especially as there are a few second hand due to upgrades, but carefully check vendor and the condition especially the sensor / chip as unqualified cleaning can totally wreck it.

  The Problem with Ebay overseas
Review created: 14/02/07

I had a similar problem with China, I sent money for this camera and got nothing back except a request for more cash for Chineese customs clearance. Having chcked with Chineese customs they had no idea what I was talking about.
So reported "seller" to ebay who basicly did sod all, so I tried the Chinese Police in the area from where the seller came from but got no where, So lastly I tried the chineese embasy in London who are as useful as our home office if you know what i mean. So my advice is if you are looking at spending a lot of money make it in driving distance. Then with the seller go to local bank and do a transfer, Dont hand over cash as there is no record of it. If seller does not allow collection from his home or place of Business DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM
Good luck.

  Nikon D2X Digital Camera

A Nikon user in the old days of film, for some reason I went over to Canon in my entry to digital. I have gone through the ranks from a D60,to the 1Ds MK II, and now after four years Of Canon, I have realised that it's not how many megapixels you have and it's not how long the nice white lens is. So I sold the lot on eBay and bought a Nikon D2X, WHY?, it feels like a camera and it feels indestructable. But thats only part of it, you have a top quality sensor that accepts an image from what I consider to be the best optics, I also believe that the flash system for Nikon is untouchable for versatility and quality.Take A small thing like an angle finder for macro work, I had three new Canon finders and each one used to drop to one side or the other due to design, The Nikon angle finder has to be pushed to its setting, thats Quality. Another thing that screams out design in a Nikon, when you fix a flash gun to most other camera's, you have to fiddle with a twist knob under the flash head, (not good when you have large fingers, On the Nikon you simply slide your flash head to the hot shoe and twist a lever to the right and its locked.

The D2X is a stunning camera but use it correctly

The D2X was and still is a top of the line professional digital SLR. Nothing else (yet) packs more pixels per inch. Used below ISO 400 this camera is jaw droppingly sharp and offers very impressive autofocus tracking and accuracy.

The D2X with its 1.5x crop sensor and 2x auto-crop mode, is designed and best suited for long telephoto and distance shooting. This combined with having still the best resolving power of a Nikon mount camera means that the D2X is capable of outstanding detail and sharpness, due mainly to its high quality anti aliasing filter.

Ergonomically it is very good, probably just behind the newer D200 and D300 units, but still light years ahead of the cumbersome Canon 1D.

It is my camera of choice for wildlife photography and if i was to start from scratch again, this would be the camera i would buy.

This is a review about the camera, not about eBay

I have two D2Xs and I can honestly say it is an excellent camera. I shoot around 20 weddings a year and they have proven to be reliable and provide excellent results.

Why have the first two reviews assigned a 'poor' rating when it is clear they don't even own the camera? So they were foolish enough to be scammed by some scum-sucking lowlife on eBay, but what has this got to do with the camera?

  Nikon D2X Camera Body

Whatis there not to like. As soon as you hold it in your hands you know just by the feel and weight and the fact thats its made by Nikon you know you have something pretty special. After owning an F70 F4s and F5 you can tell its a Nikon even before seeing the front of the camera. Everything is set out as you would expect and features on it are almost endless. Being able to go onto the Nikon website and upload the latest version of the software (which turns the D2X into a D2Xs is also very handy). If youve owned a Nikon before then most things will be pretty familiar with you. If however this is your 1st serious digital camera then you might at first be a little blown away by all the features on the LCD display on the rear. However after going through them slowly they will all make sense to you.
I would strongly recommend this camera, especially after paying £4495 for a Kodak Pro 14n when it 1st came out in April 2003. The D2X knocks spots off the Pro 14n!!
The grip on the camera and rubberised covering moulds well in your hand and also provides an anti slip coating to. The camera because of its design quality doesnt feel anywhere like the 1.2kg that it actually is.
The choice of metering patterns you can select at the flick of a switch is very handy and easy to use.
When you hear the shutter click in the D2X you know the difference and exactly what you have compaered to any other brand of camera.
Ive tried to come up with something negative i dont like or something i maybe feel they could of done differently but i struggle to think of anything. Possibly the only thing that i would like to see happen is for Nikon to bring out a model either a D2X/24 OR D3/24 with 24 million pixels to rival Canon. We know the tachnology has been there for ages and also it doesnt need to reflect so heavily on the huge price rise like it has in the Canons.

  Moving up a Notch!
Review created: 14/03/09

Having been involved with photography for over 50 years I must admit to being originally a little sceptical of the digital market. However, deciding not to take a pointy-headed view I got some groundwork on a Kodak EasyShare, and then rapidly graduating to Nikons viz. D70 and D100 (I love Nikon and my choice was not just governed by my collection of lenses).

When the opportunity arose I looked for the D2X. Mine has a D2Xs upgrade and for the type of images I go for (mainly landscapes, shipping and architecture) it offers everything I could wish for, and more.

I work quite often in fairly wild outdoor locations and, having lost one camera, a Minolta, to "fluid ingress" (rain seeping in!) I was concerned about durability. However, the robustness of the D2X is a great re-assurance.

If anyone is in a similar position I would reinforce the commonly held views - that is to read the manual and take the time to learn your camera

  Using the Nikon D2x
Review created: 12/02/09
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In all, this is simply a fabulous camera, especially at current ebay prices hovering around the £650-700 mark!
As a pro tool this camera, whilst may not neccessarily feature specific specs any greater than current new mid range DSLR's it has one major advantage.....build quality!
Speed of use is a joy, as many features are on their own button, not shared with many different other ones.
Being more use to a D2h, the D2x is a very similar beast. Whilst the frame rate is reduced to 5fps, instead of the D2h 8fps, this can be made up by selecting whats called a hi speed crop mode. This effectively reduced the surface area of sensor used (approx' 2x crop factor, instead of 1.5x), it does boost the fps rate back up to 8fps.
A neat idea, like the D2h, is a programmable function button. This can be used for a variety of functions you'd like to access at the touch of a button, rather than going through the custom menus. I have mine set to instantly take a spot metering reading, however, it can also be used for flash on/off, umoungst other others. I also like the fact I can program this to switch between full and hi speed crop, by pressing the button and using the back control wheel.
Do not be confused about the resolution of this camera. Impressive at just under 13mpixels on paper, in reality it is simply astounding!! This really does blow away Nikons own D80 and D200.
Chipped batteries might be a little expensive, but they do give a very very accurate use indicator.
I thoroughly recommend the use of the optional magnified eyepiece, which makes viewing appaerance more like the film SLR's like nikons F5. It's invaluable if you also plan on using the hi speed crop mode.
It's not all good though. One headache users have to work around is the max flash sync speed. Whilst the D1 series cameras were pretty phenominal in this department, the D2x struggles at max speed of 1/250th. Ok in the days of the film cameras like FM2n, but a little middle of the road for a todays technology. Can be limiting if you're a fan of fill-in flash. One thing to work around though.
One thing that more than makes up for flash spec is the colour modes. Colour mode III is brutally brilliant. In fact, it is so well respected that D300,D700 and D3 cameras have an option to download this D2x firmware!!
If only the poor colour control seen in the D1 series cameras had been somewhere near this D2x.
Forget buying a new D90 or saving up for a D300....get a D2x here on ebay for a real bargain price!
Happy hunting

Nikon D2X beats all its competitors.
Review created: 04/12/07

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The D2X is a fantastic camera with startling image clarity -
"The D2X Professional digital SLR has a 12.4 million pixel DX format CMOS sensor, by default the D2X can shoot at 5 fps, however it has an interesting 6.8 milion pixel option which reduces the sensing area (to a FOV crop of 2x) but increases the frame rate to 8 fps. Hence the D2X can be seen as two cameras in one, a 12.4 million pixel high resolution shooter and a 6.8 million pixel high frame rate shooter. Obviously the use of CMOS is new to Nikon but also new on this camera is a four channel read-out from the sensor and the ability to perform WB correction to the analogue data before it is digitized. Also new is the WT-2 wireless transmitter with 802.11 b/g support and wireless Capture Control (Nikon Capture 4.2)."

  NIKON D2X SIMPLY SUPERB
Review created: 06/05/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a truly great camera, whilst I would not recommend this for a point and shoot snapper as an amateur at any standard you will see your performance increase if you purchase this camera. The quality speed of autofocus and sheer bliss of owning a camera of this quality is wonderfull. I have had many cameras but this tops the lot. The only thing is you may need to invest in some decent glass if you are really picky. I have to say that I have a vast selection of cheapish nikon glass and a few old sigmas they all turn in a fair performance but cheaper brands have varying quality control so sometimes you may have to aquire a few of the same focal length to get a good one. There are oodles of different configurations and settings more than the instructions to a chinese calculator however this is serious kit splash out invest in a camera like this and prepare to be amazed what you can do.

As for all the people posting about being ripped off a review is not really the place to post such articles there are other topic areas to post about these matters.

D2X are bargain now for Advanced amateurs or Semi-Pros
Review created: 17/09/09
by:

The Nikon D2X has now got to be thee bargain and choice for advanced amateur or semi-pro photographers. I have personally owned a D3 and a D3X (the new boys in town) but money troubles made me have to sell. I went for a good condition low actuation D2X and I have not regretted it! The only feature I find myself missing is the "Live view" which I used on occassion on the newer DSLR's.
I would recommend a D2X to anyone who can find a good one, over and above todays alternatives around similar price: ie. D300, D300s, D5000 or even D700 !!! I would still recommend a Nikon D3 to anyone and everyone who can afford it because it by far the best DSLR I have had the pleasure of owning to date.
BUT consider very carefully whether you really need or want to spend an extra £2000 for a D3 when you can buy a used D2X and use your excess money toward really good optics. Lets face it, the body is merely a processing unit the better the optics you attach the better images you will get in return.

To conclude: The Nikon D2X + professional lenses = top class results good enough for anyone.

  Nikon D2X
Review created: 03/02/09
by:

I bought this camera for one very simple attribute - it is the only Nikon Digital SLR that supports the famous TC-16A autofocus 1.6x teleconverter. This TC was a 1985 concept that allowed manual focus lenses to autofocus with the new AF cameras - initially only the 35mm film camera F501, later other film cameras up to the F90. By the time the brilliant F100 came along, the Nik AF lenses had come of age and the TC-16A was no longer a big deal.

Enough history, I doubt many people buying this camera second hand will be interested in this aspect. If anyone is, yes it works - a manual focus Tamron Adaptall 2 300mm f/2.8 became a 480mm f/4.5 (approx) AF lens. For those who believe the 1.5x APS-C magnification factor propaganda, that's an equivalent 720mm lens. Just Google "crop factor" first if you are impressed by that stat.

On a more general note. I've been with Nikon for decades - FG20, F501 (loved it) F601, F90, F100 (love it). In the digital age, I've gone D70S, D80, D300 and D700. The two latter are being marketed as "Pro" cameras but the D2X is the first I've had that is really truly aimed at Pros - massive battery, portrait mode controls with no extra driver, weather seals, and err.. that's about it?

At the moment, there's precious little to choose pricewise between second hand D300s and D2Xs. For me, the D300 wins hands down on 2 related counts - the 3" rear LCD screen is wonderful, and taken in tandem with tripod mode live view that is a real modern selling point.

I have a decent stack of Nikkor and Tamron SP primes that I will be using on the D700, but mostly at the wide end. At the long end, AF for me is crucial so it was a fairly easy decision to swap the D300 for a D2X.

So I'm feeling in a happy dilemma - will I use the D700 with the D2X as backup, or vice versa?

Recomendation: Unless you need the TC-16A AF capability that goes with the D2X, get a D300. If you have a good selection of full frame primes, think about the D700, but also think about whether modern zooms are so good that they have broken the old rule that primes are always better. For all the criticism he gets, Ken Rockwell's site is really helpful on this.
