I have used several of these professionally over the past 2/3 years with great results.

The D2H really is a pro workhorse and hardly ever misses a beat. Occasionally, I have dropped a shot or not quite got it pin sharp, but anybody who says it NEVER lets them down, probably isn't using it! It could have been me, the lens or the CF card that was at fault anyway.

I had D1s and D1Hs before and what a vast improvement the battery life is on the D2. A D1 battery would last 2/3 hours if you were lucky, the battery on the D2 nearly always lasts the whole day.

I use the 8 frames/sec for show jumping which enables me to present the whole sequence as they go over the jump and land for consideration.

It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I also like the image magnification of 1.5 times. It means my 70-200 F2.8 AFS lens now has a focal length of 105-300 while retaining the F2.8 max apeture. As I don't want the full frame capability of the D3, I'll stick with my D2s as long as I can.

With the latest SB800 flash unit, flash photography is the best yet on Nikon's DSLRs. Still not as reliable as their film cameras, but getting better.

I would highly recomend the Nikon D2 series cameras to anybody who is contemplating buying one.

Good luck and happy shooting.

  Nikon D2H simply amazing

I have a Nikon D40x and it is great, 10.1 mp and great useability but when I got a Nikon D2H I was blown away. The thought that has gone in to this camera is second to none, hence why the D3 looks almost exactly the same. It may only be 4.1mp but the quality is amazing, if I want a shot to print A4 or A3 I use my D2H instead of the 10mp D40x. If you want a point and click DSLR go for something like the D40x if you want a camera where every funcion is at your fingertips the D2H is the one for you. I like using manual mode and the D2H is so easy to use, if i want to change the iso (or pretty much anything) its one button not going through loads of menus. The photos are pin sharp and look like pro shots because this is what the pros had before the D2x or the D3. Some might say its weight is a down side but i find it is no problem, to me it just feels solid and well made, plus it looks stunning! Knowing what i do now given the choice of a new camera or a D2H for the same money i would always have the D2H, unless i could afford the D2x or the D3.

Came to the D2H via F4's, F5's and the odd mid-range Nikon DX DSLR.

+ves:
* Built like a lumphammer. The build would actually make it a good travel camera were it all you had to carry. Strap on a 35mm f2 AF and be very, very happy with your lot.
* Focuses quicker than you can point it.
* Meters old AI and AIS lenses (although that somewhat misses the point of the D2h) meaning some razor-sharp shots for a tiny outlay.
* Still more than capable of making some spectacular images. If 100% examinations of prints is your bag, get something MF/LF and exotic. If you want to stay within the traditional boundaries of 35mm film, and 8fps sounds like fun (it is), this is a relatively cheap experiment that will leave you with a grin on your face because this is one fun camera to use.

-ves:
* Dodgy between ISO320 and 800 with respect to noise. It's not a killer, but be careful with auto ISO active.
* All that metal means it weighs a fair bit. If you're a PJ pro and have to carry three bodies you've already got D3's. The rest of us should just have that extra shredded wheat in the morning and stop moaning.
* 4MP won't blow up to twenty-four foot square, so prepare answers for smug idiot friends with a 12MP compact from Lidl.

In summary, this is a bit of a gem. Take advantage of others' hysteria for the latest and greatest, and grab yourself a bargain. I'm glad I did.

I already have one of these cameras and use it as a professional, it is robust very quick and very accurate to use, consistantly giving very good results. amature photographers worry to much about pixels, In general studio and pr use printing up to A3 this has never been a problem. I have always liked the way the professional D2 digital cameras and the f5 film cameras by nikon have the same basic controls so it is easy to use both formatts on a regular basis - you do not have to much to worry about, and can shoot without to much thought. Great buy.

  Nikon D2H Digital SLR camera

I bought this camera as a back up for my existing Nikon digital SLRs, a D300
and a D700,both of which I bought new. The D2H is bigger and heavier than
these two but feels even more robust. In digital terms, it is old technology
and with only 4.1 megapixels (the others are over 12), I didn't really expect
much from it. However, I've been pleasantly surprised with the results so far
and have produced A3 prints which are pin sharp. I would certainly recommend
it to anyone who aspires to a professional Nikon digital SLR, but can't afford
the latest models. I bought mine for £360.00 and I've seen some go for less.

  Nikon D2Hs advantage

The very first thing you'll notice is it's build quality. Handling this camera on a full day shooting is next to nothing because of the excellent ergonomics (an engineer myself).

In terms of picture quality, this camera produce low noise on high ISO setting, less black pixel due to more efficient sensor & no horizontal pixel separation found in Canon 1D model.

The buffer capacity is 50 Jpeg on a continuous burst mode (8fps) and with a quick update with the latest firmware (version 2.0) it will boost it up to 60.

AF tracking is both fast and spot on and from what I've heard it is far superior than D300 & D700 (expected from a pro camera).

I hope this helps :)

Nikon D2H , The Good, The Bad, & The Bottom Line
Review created: 24/12/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The good:
Fast drive mode with large buffer; big 2.5-inch LCD with superfast image review; amazing battery life; solid build.

The bad:
Expensive for only 4.1 megapixels; takes some tweaking to get high-quality images; steep learning curve for new users; file-naming system can cause overwrite problems.

The bottom line:
For professional sports and action photographers invested in Nikon gear, this is the camera to have.

Specifications:
Digital camera type: SLR ; Resolution: 4.1 megapixels ; Display type: 2.5 in LCD display

The D2H is everything its predecessor, the D1X, needed to be. ISO 1600 pushable to 6400 as opposed to 800. 8 fps. Screen far more user friendly. Complemented by the incredible SB800 flash rather than the good SB-80DX. More press friendly than the D2XS, though not quite as good for portraits. Clean fully functional examples can be found at the £500 - £600 mark on eBay these days. This is a superb backup for that kind of money - or an entry level bargain for anyone upgrading.
