Nikon the mark of true excellence

Nikkor lenses are synonymous with excellent edge to edge sharpness and this lens is no exception. Nikkor is generally also associated with "expensive" label, but this lens is real value for money and reasonably priced, for the performance and quality. This len the Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm is ideal for wildlife photography .

I was able to shot some amazing wildlife shots, when I visited Wildwood, a British Wildife reserve in Kent. The day was overcast and the indviudal pens are nestled in some ancient woodland, giving the animals a real natural envirement. I was glad for the anti-shake facility built into this lens, which allowed me to shoot with slow shutter speed withhout the dreaded camera shake. The VT allowed me to handhold at 30th of a second and yes, the picture was sharp and correctly exposed.

The quality is pin sharp and the versatility of this zoom is just perfect for Wildlife photographers. This is not just useful for wildlife photo shoots, but I would go as far as saying, this Zoom lens should be in every Nikon DSLR owners kitbag . Don't leave the house without one.
Happy shooting

No great shakes! Why you must buy this lens

If like me you own a Nikon Digital camera and a standard 18 to something zoom, the next step is to invest in something a bit longer to capture those far off objects.
Now this is where the fun starts, there are lots of lenses out there from just under a £100 to well over £4K, all claiming to give you excellent image quality.
It pays to do a bit of searching on the net and if you research this lens you will discover that it gets great reviews from all.
For me it has the VR or vibration reduction function which is really useful allowing the use of slower shutter speeds allowing you to get sharp pictures more of the time.
In my opinion anything handheld at 300mm and using less than 1/250th sec would be blurry,as I seem to have the shakes(No wonder im not a brain surgeon LOL)
What VR does not do,is help freeze action. So if you need high shutter speeds then sell the wife and kids and buy one of those £4k monsters, for the rest of us the 70-300 VR is perfect offering fast focussing and sharp images and all for well under £300 if you look hard on Ebay.

I have bought two of these lenses, both via ebay – one never turned up but lucklily I got a refund. The second turned up as promised so all credit to that particular ebay vendor.

But these reviews are not meant to be comments on suppliers they are intended to be an objective comment an a particular product and thats just what I’m going to do.

I have a bit of a collection of Nikon lenses and I bought this one for distant landscapes and occasional wildlife photograpy and I must say it fits the bill fantasticly, it will focus quickley at as close as 1.5 metres and captures clear detail at all distances.

Auto focus is fast and quiet at all focal lengths and the vibration reduction is also quiet with no distracting motor / gyro noise. Images are crisp, clear and of course the VR means you can use slower shutter speeds and still achieve great results.

On the price front this is not an expensive lens by 70 to 300 standards but it has the quality feel of a lens costing much more. The zoom is tight and even when fully extended to 300mm there is no play in the barrel, this also helps to give crisp results. I only mention this as I have noticed on some lower priced long lenses there can by a degree of flexibilty in an extended lens leading to occasional blurring.

Colours are clear and accurate and I have yet to be dissappointed with any shots taken with this lens.

I would happily recommend this lens to anyone, if you are on a tight budget and you need a good focal range lens invest in one of these, you will not be dissappointed.

By the way, I am not a Nikon share holder I just love the quality feel and great performance that most Nikon products deliver.

Nikon hits the spot with long zoom

I have been deliberating for a mong time about which lens to buy in this zoom range. I already own 2nd hand 70-300s in the form of a Sigma with macro and a Nikon G type lens. Both of these are perfectly adequate for what I paid for them.

But it was time to move on up as they say and it was between this lens and the Tamron or Sigma equivalents. After reading numerous reviews (inc Ken Rockwell) I plumped for this lens as it has the VR image stabilisation feature.

Now I haven't exactly been able to test it since purchase as the weather has not been conducive to long lens photography, but carrying out my usual tests of brickwork and a few other tried and tested images I have found it to be an excellent lens. I find the zoom pull to be pretty consistent across the whole range (some reviews have it that this is "clunky") and the VR is excellent- although I have yet to test the 4 f-stops claim from Nikon properly. I have done some sports shooting and found it to be pretty good, with very little creep and quick AF.

If considering a lens for your Nikon, or Fuji Pro I would rate this very highly.

I like this lens. I have had other 70-300 lenses before, a Tamron and a Sony for my last camera. I used them rarely as I found them a little soft. This one however is altogether a vast improvement. Its light for such a big lens but has a quality feel about it right down to the metal mount. (Not something you get on every lens). I find is just as sharp as some of the more exotic, and hugely more expensive F2.8 70-200 lenses. In fact I have scored better in club competition's than others using the much more expensive equipment. Saying that I tend to use it on a tripod for landscape projects where my subject is not likely to fly away nor is it racing round a track. In good light even that is not really a problem. All in all it's capable of superb pictures if you use it sensibly. Just remember the vast majority of great pictures are a result of the photographer not the equipment they use. I would highly recommend it.
