Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF Lens

This is a great lens, make no mistake. Pro build quality and action in use. Look to the Ken Rockwell website for his opinion on Nikon lenses. What I have to say here, assumes a certain background knowledge. If you don't like Ken, then read Thom.
Straight from Nikon you can be sure of good optics from this lens. But if you are buying it on Ebay be very wary. Even a pro lens can wear and suffer damage.
I bought one from a seller with a very good rep. But the lens was not excellent as described. It might not have suffered a drop, but it is hard to tell why that particular example had a sticky zoom around the 24mm mark and a noisy AFS. These kind of defects don't show up in photographs. (Or some people's descriptions it seems!)
So yes be very very wary. Fixation quoted £340 to replace the AFS motor and zoom. I paid almost £800 so for £1140 I would expect a new UK example with 1 year warranty from a UK authorised dealer.
Oh for the good old days of AP ads when you could go and see what you were buying before parting with your wedge.
So if you really want to take a chance on buying blind. Cross your fingers tightly, ask a neightbour preferably a Barrister, GP or Solicitor to witness you opening the parcel and your putting the lens on your camera!
As for me? Well Fixation were very helpful, they reprogrammed my D100, so I am sticking with all my DX lenses for the moment rather than going for the 17-35 and a F700
Good luck
