Reviews of the lens were good and although a lot of people were upgrading to VR type lenses, I decided that this lens was a good buy and although I bid on one or two others before winning. The results are as good as expected the lens was a good buy.

  Best Kit lens bar none
Review created: 18/12/07

A superb kit lens which shows a clean pair of heels to any of Canon's kit offerings. This is a solid well made lens that has a semi professional feel to it, it has a nice wide bit of glass at the end 67mm and has a lovely smooth zoom and focus mechanism. It is whisper quiet and you can focus it manually just by turning the focus ring even when in auto thanks to a button at the side. It only has a 3.5 aperture at the wide end but this is better than the kit lens average of 4.0-4.5. This lens is about £200 new in the shops but you can pick them up as new for just over a £100 on ebay. Factor in the lens cost with the cameras its in kit with and it makes a lot of sense. The D80 might appear more expensive than its Canon counterpart but thats because of the quality of this lens. It is lovely and sharp throughout the range and provides nice punchy pictures - as with most lenses its best at f8-11. The focal length of effectively 28 - 105 is very useful and will do for most situations. All in all a well made lens that gives good consistent results at the very top of the amateur scale and just creeps into the Semi Pro standard...

  Go with the Sigma

The Nikon 18-70 is nice and compact but lacks sharpnes, suffers from heavy vineghting and croma. The Sigma 17-70 is sharp throughout dosent suffer from the vineghting or croma and is faster at the short focal length.

Great lens but a lesson for buying 2nd hand
Review created: 13/07/09
by:

The lens is a great improvement on the standard 18-55mm that came with my camera, I really love being able to auto-focus and then manually adjust the focus for fine tuning.

However, I bought the lens second-hand. It looked perfect and well cared for. It was only after using it on the smallest aperture, F22 I think, that I noticed dirt on the images. It was really difficult to see it by looking in the lens but there's dirt inside that will require a strip-down to remove. The cost of having the lens cleaned is going to approach the purchase price.

I tried to dismantle it but chickened out after taking the mounting plate off as I'm not sure I'll get it back together again if I go further, and while doing this I noticed that one of the screws was slightly chewed, which leads me to think that the seller had tried to dismantle it at some point.

If you're going to buy a lens secondhand I would recommend buying in person and trying it out on your camera against a bright background, at a variety of apertures, and check that the screws have not been tampered with.

Overall though, it's a good lens.

  Plastic Fantastic
Review created: 12/05/09
by:

I found this lens a bit of mixed bag. What it does have going for it is the image quality, silent and quick focus motor and the fact that the end of the barrel does not rotate when zooming or focusing. I was a bit disapointed by the build quality however. the lens is made from plastic and does not feel as though it has the same tight tollerences that a metal lens has. The barrel feels a bit sloppy when extended. It is saved a bit by the fact that the mount is metal rather than the dreaded plastic. My previous experiences of this range of lens is the Sony 18-70DT which it beats hands down, a Sigma EX 24-70 F2.8 which was built like a tank and sounded like one when focusing but was just as good in terms of picture quality and an older Nikon 35-70 F2.8 which blows them all away. In my opinion I would buy it if I was getting it cheap enough (<£150) but personally I would wait until a could find the older 35-70 F2.8 Nikkor lens for £100 more.

This is a great and loved lens

General impressions: What has not written about "whales" objectively and generally prevailing opinion that these are not particularly cheap and quality products. None of this lens out with D70 and was sold in a set with him as its price was not the lowest. Given a bad experience with lens bought with cheap body (Canon 300V and 28-90/4-5.6) before the time I took only the first camera, a lens in a wide range I used Nikkor AF 18-35/3.5-4.5 D IF - ED. Soon thereafter, however, be decided and I took and that "cetaceous" lens as izlyuchitelno I was pleasantly surprised - it was very well made device. Three ED one aspherical element that gives nikor very good image in the whole range. Naturally, not missing and drawbacks inherent objective of the lower class - distortions, aberrations, loss of detail at the end of frames, but bearable degree. Ultimately, this is a very useful and relatively high-quality lens, which definitely worth the money.
Advantages:
Internal focus and built-in motor, scale distance focus
Hood and cover in a set with the lens
3 ED and one element asferichen
Rubber seal of the bayonet to protect from dust
Disadvantages:
Obvious distortions and aberrations, especially in the broader region
DX format - can be used only digital bodies of Nikon
Image at the end of the frames is more soft compared with the Nikkor AF 18-35/3.5-4.5 D IF-ED

Overall assessment: good
Experience with the lens: from half a year to one year

A really good Basic range lense
Review created: 01/09/08
by:

I decided to buy this lense because I dropped the 18-55mm basic lense that came with my Nikon D50 SLR and banjoed it. I wanted something that was suitable for just basic picture taking, a good allrounder so to speak because I had a wideangle and a long range.
This lense is what I would call a semi-automatic. There is an autofocus lense but also a seperate focus that enables you to easily and quickly focus from foreground to background, which I actually found really useful. If you're looking for a good upgrade to your bog standard 18-55mm Nikkor lense, this is the one for you.

  Good lens, with limitations.
Review created: 08/04/08
by:

Nice neat lens, not too heavy to carry around all day.
Well built with a seal between lens and camera.
Sharp when stopped down a couple of stops.Fast focussing with servo motor.
It's one big problem is that it exhibits very obvious barrel distortion at the wider end. If shooting architectural work, unless you wish to spend time in photoshop to correct the distortion, then stay between 24-70mm.

Superb lens with a useful range. Equivalent 35mm range would be 28 - 105mm.
A replacement for the 18 - 55 lens.
