Bought this lens (£130ish) as my main lens for my Nikon F100, and can only highly recommend this to amateur photographers.
Having a limited budget, I needed a good lens and could only afford to buy one. After some research, I quickly discovered that this was by far the best bet - and in fact is suggested as the starter lens for the upper amateur/low-end pro Nikon range. Brand new this lens will set you back around £270, however keep a look out for well-kept, mildew free second-handers as you can scoop up a real bargain.
At the top of the amateur range, this zoom covers optimal focal length and does not compromise on visal quality. It is very clear and sharp, and does not suffer from the 'plasticy' syndrome that other lower-spec Nikkor lenses do, like the G range (standard on F65/75 models).
It's definately the best lens around if you're looking for a long zoom that will serve as your only/main lens - you just can't beat Nikkor quality, even at this price.
So far I have used the lens for a wedding anniversary (group photos), landscape photography and portraits, and on each the clarity and contrast is fantastic.
As for dislikes...have yet to find any! It does stop short of the optimal portrait length (135mm), however is very good for landscapes. You just can't go wrong with one of these.
