Very fast, small, pin sharp, excellent for low light non flash photos, candid close-up and portrait, get one you will love it. Only problem it wont auto-focus on the Nikon D40/40X, you have to use manual.

  Very bright and light lens

Very bright lens which is very helpful when I don't want to use the flash but on min aperture 1.8 it's very difficult to get in focus exactly what I want so recommended for posing portrets when person doesn't move, using together with remote to avoid movements of camera when pressing button.

  Nothing better for the money
Review created: 24/02/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

You should be paying no more than £80 for a new boxed version of this gem of a lens - on Ebay you could be looking as low as £69. This lens is a 50mm 1.8 and is so sharp you will cut yourself! For the money you will not find a better portrait lens. On a Nikon DSLR (except the D3) this lens is the equivalent of a 75mm 1.8 - to give you an idea of how much you would have to spend on an equivalent take a look at the Nikon 85mm 1.8 and you will see how much of a bargain this lens is. Factor in that its light, compact, well made and robust and only has a 52mm thread for such a bright lens and you are on to a sure fire winner - buy one take a portrait shot with it set at 1.8 and tell me I am wrong.....

  Nikon 50mm AF f1.4D lens

I have already owned one of these lenses and used it for a film camera. Its sharpness was obvious when compared against other lenses including Pentax primes.
I bought this second lens to compliment my digital camera, a Nikon D40X and it has lived up to expectation.
I'm comparing it to the 18 - 55mm kit lens supplied with the camera, when set at 50mm. The kit lens is incredibly good but the 50mm lens still beats it. The difference shows when zooming in to an image at a distance.
The other obvious advantage is the availability of f1.8 maximum aperture against the kit lens of f3.5, which will really show in low light situations such as our winters. A great purchase with no regrets.

  The best value Nikon lens

This lens is without doubt the best value lens available to Nikon SLRs. It is pin sharp and works great even at f1.8.

If you have a Nikon SLR then you should add this.

What can I say, it's a nikkor "the best".
Light and compact, bright f1.8, good depth of field with f22 minimum apature.
handles like you would expect from nikon, AF is fast and accurate and quite quiet.

This is one of the sharpest lens on the market. For a modest cost, compared to high quality zoom, it is worth having in the bag for those occasions when you want pure quality.

This is an Excellent lens..with great Bokeh if the Aperture is set 1.8 it can blur out anything thats not in focus. gives very pleasing results. and pretty decent indoor aswell. only thing is there is a minimum focusing distance on this lens so if you get too close to the subject then you cant focus. then again this is not a macro lens so i shudnt really complain. also you need a lens like this with a fixed focal length to improve your skill as a photographer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

  Awesome lens
Review created: 09/11/09

Incredible value, opens up whole new types of shot from my D60. Depth of field is huge, so huge that you sometimes find yourself stopping down so you can actually focus. Never had to do that on a digital camera before. Only down side is its not auto focus, but then you can buy an auto focus version for a couple of hundred quid. The beauty of this is its small, basic and takes incredible looking pics.

Very good lens. Really good value for a lens that sharp. The only problem is that it feels kind of plastic. But for it's price I think that is not a really a down-side. I have been using it with a film camera Nikon F80 and had great results.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens
Review created: 07/09/09

My daughter had been struggling on with an early E series 50mm lens and this one enabled her to autofocus which with a lens of relatively short focal length is really helpful. Although a used item the condition was very good. A saving of about £30 on a new one.

  Fantastic prime lens
Review created: 12/04/09
by:

Fantastic fast bit of glass. One of the cheapest, yet sharpest lens you can get for your Nikon.
On the DX sensor cameras it has the viewing angle of a 75mm.
Perfect portrait lens.
The wide aperture makes dropping the background out with a short depth of field an absolute dream.
The autofocus is the old camera motor driven type, so the focus ring spins round on the front of the lens, which can be a shock if you're not used to it. The filter mount does not rotate.
It's louder than the newer SWM system used on the AFS lenses which has the motor in the lens.
The old AF system also means the lens will not auto focus on cameras which do not contain a focus motor (look on the lens mounting plate at about 7 o'clock for a spring loaded slot drive - I would link an image, but the ebay rules so I'm not allowed to). The D40 and D60 will not be able to use auto focus with this lens, the D50, D70, D80 and D90 have a motor in the body, so can use it.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens
Review created: 08/04/09

What a great lens to own, great in low light, great depth of field and all so because of its size not too 'in your face' if you want to be a little more discreet or make your subject feel more at ease (always a god idea)

If you cant afford those hugely expensive fast lenses that stop down below f/2.8 then this is a cheep way of experimenting with a low aperture, it is a lot of fun.

I have recently used this lens for a Birthday meal in a resturant no other lens could have done the job better, I used the dramatic depth of field to get some great shots of the table set up before hand, during the meal the lens coped well with the low light in the resturant without annoying other diners by resorting to using a flash and people didn't feel too uncomfortable being photographed due to the lenses size.

So if you are thinking about buying this lens I would highly recommend it, its another useful tool in your Arsenal..

  Great cheap low light lens
Review created: 20/02/09

This lens is a bargain if you either want a prime portrait or an occasional low light lens. Its light weight so add it to your kit without much increase of weight but the backup of knowing those extra stops might be just what you need when the light dimms. Very sharp and crisp immages. Works fine on my D300 and Fuji S5 Pro. Go on get yourself one you wont be disapointed. approx 75mm on DX format cameras.

  Little Gem
Review created: 05/04/08

This lens is a little gem. I bought it on the advice of a friend who said he'd had some great results taking shots of his children indoors without having to use flash. I've had some terrific results. Beautiful, crisp shots, and being a fixed focal length it makes you get more involved with what you are shooting. Usual Nikon quality and amazing price make this lens the bargain of the year. Buy one, you won't be disappointed!

This lens is an absolute bargain ! The depth of field differences that you can achieve are astonishing ,i got mine of ebay for £65 new , but be aware when you are attaching the lens to get the focusing screw alligned otherwise it wont auto focus ,it took me a couple of go's to do this but once its up and running you will be pleased .I took some pictures of my daughter in my garden at home and they ALL looked awesome .
