Album Notes Blake Babies: Juliana Hatfield, John Strohm, Freda Boner.Originally released in 1987 on the small label Chew-Bud and reissued by Mammoth Records in 1994 after singer-bassist Juliana Hatfield's commercial breakthrough (and attracting some attention of its own for the cover photo of Hatfield in an unbuttoned men's shirt). NICELY NICELY shows this Boston trio early in their career, with rougher playing, sillier lyrics--titles include "Let Them Eat Crunchy Granola Bars" and "Swill and the Cocaine Sluts"--and a punkier attitude than their later, more polished and poppy albums. However, the songs already have much of the tuneful jangle that made later albums such a delight, and Hatfield's unique voice is in full flower. The album's highlight is "Better 'n You," a folk-rocky duet with Hatfield's best friend, Lemonhead Evan Dando, who also guests on bass and guitar. Nicely Nicely is a prime example of American indiepop in the mid-'80s.

4 Stars - Excellent - ...combines everything from live to 24-track to raw 8-track recordings, and there's even...a duet with long-time collaborator Evan Dando....A real slice of indie-pop history which holds up surprisingly well... Q (01/01/1995)
