Album Notes
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar): Gillian Gilbert (keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums).Recorded live at The Glastonbury Festival on June 19, 1987. Includes liner notes by Paul Lester.Recorded live in England in the summer of 1987, this disc is an uneven hour of New Order music that is redeemed by some brilliantly inspired versions of classic tracks. The album opener, "Touched by the Hand of God," is hampered by a bottom-heavy sound quality that serves the band poorly. The second track, "Temptation," goes a long way to improving things, though. Performed slightly faster than usual with the guitar lines cutting brightly into the melody, it is clearly one of the band's best. The middle of the album, which includes a renamed "Every Little Counts," here called "Every Second Counts," also suffers from poor sound, though there are some interesting alternate lyrics to several well-known tracks. On a 10-minute workout of "Perfect Kiss," things finally begin to get on track, with Peter Hook's bass lines delivered with authority and Bernard Sumner's vocals full of gusto. An excellent "Age of Consent" follows, featuring the whole band playing fast and sloppy, clearly enjoying itself. Ending on a high note, a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" builds over nearly nine minutes, accelerating into a crunch of samples that really shows just how good New Order can be live.
