This is a great little switch. Only bad points : (a) no lugs - so you cannot really fit it in a rack very well - you need a shelf (b) mobile phone style power supply - so it won't like an IEC (kettle lead) connection to your UPS (it's max draw is 180 watts).

The speed etc. of this switch is fantastic, good quality build. Silent in operation. It does exactly what it says on the tin - and is probably the best value gigabit ethernet switch you can buy today. Hop-to-hop times for my lan is <1ms per port. Throughput is great - although I have no numbers to support this.

It is unmanaged - and I dont think it has any snmp monitoring, or advanced port control features etc. but if you are just looking to connect up a small LAN - this is no problem at all.

I do not regret buying this switch - and if it lasts as well as it looks like it will at the moment (I am just 1 month in so far) - then I am/will be a very happy chappy.

A breeze to set up. Plenty of bandwidth for multiple giga bit connections. Decent robust box.
Excellent value for money especially when you buy used ones off ebay half price. I bought 2.

NetGear (formerly "Bay Networks", for those with a long memory) have an established reputation for producing good quality, no frills, network kit. These "GS116" switches are a prime example of why.
Good solid build quality (strong metal cases, not plastic, so they don't try to tip over when used with a lot of cables), small footprint, well ventilated (3 out of 4 sides are completely "grilled", so plenty of air-flow but with no need for noisy fans), run cool, auto MDI/MDI-X ports (so you don't need cross-over cables to daisy-chain them if necessary), ... They're also supplied with everything you might need, even including mounting screws and wall plugs, in case you want to mount them on a wall.
There's attention to every little detail as well, for example there's an earthing tag on the case. The vast majority of users won't use it, but it's there for those who will, and if you do wire up your hubs with their cases earthed (as probably many more people should than do ...) then it's a real pain if you don't have one.
We've used NetGear switches for many, many years (in fact these were bought to replace some "FS116" 10/100Mbps switches) and apart from one power supply failure we have never had a single problem. Even the power supply failure was easily rectified, as the power supplies are external.
These may not be managed, don't support VLANs, or any other of the "bells and whistles" that some switches do, but then that also means you're not paying for all the silicon to implement it. After all, for the typical applications where you'll want those features, you'll be looking at comm.s rooms with 19" rack-mount kit anyway, and that's not the market at which these seem to be aimed.
So if you want a quality, no-frills product which will last, do exactly what you need, and not eat all your infrastructure budget to do it, then get these. An unmanaged, 16 port, 10/100/1000Mbps switch which does exactly what it says it does.
If this is what you need, then this is what you want.
