  Navman F10 review

This is the first satnav I've owned, though I have used a couple of different ones before now. My requirements were for a simple reliable device at a good price. The Navman F10 is certainly not complicated. All controls are via the touch screen except for the on/off button. There are two connectors on the outside, one for an external aerial and the other is the USB input which doubles as the charger input. There is also a slot for a SD Card. The lack of external buttons means that the F10 is very compact and fits neatly in your pocket.
The 3.5" colour screen is sharp and well laid out. The screen brightness is adjusted automatically for day/night use.
You can set a destination via postcode or street address, both of which are very easy. Commonly used destinations can be saved in the Favourites folder. More complex routes can also be programmed, to allow for multiple destinations, areas to avoid, etc. Unfortunately, the retail box does not include a comprehensive manual and the manual is hard to find on the internet (try the australian NAVMAN web-site).
Street level UK & Ireland maps are included, and addition maps can be installed via SD Card.
Installation is simple. The in-car charger has a power connector which attaches to the windscreen mount. The F10 can then be quickly clipped into the mount and just as quickly removed.
In use, the F10 quickly found GPS signals without the need for an external aerial. The route calculation was fast and accurate, although not necessarily the fastest route. The voice instructions are clear and given in plenty of time (you can choose male of female voice). Unfortunately the touchscreen controls for volume control are not obvious and could have been better implemented. Speed cameras, petrol stations car parks and other points of interest are shown on the map, along with street names.

Overall, the F10 suites my requirements very well. Other satnavs can offer more facilities, including MP3 player or photo viewer functions, but I don't see the point in spending extra for features that I will never use.

The only negative points I have are:
1. There is no charger included for home use. This is only a small problem because the USB connector allows charging via a PC (you need a USB lead with a small 5-pin connector as used on many digital cameras).

2. The Quick Start guide in the box is totally inadequate and a full paper manual should have been included. Instead, there is a very thick book which turns out to be the warranty details in lots of different languages.

3. The speaker output is at the back (like most satnavs) and this reduces the volume you can actually hear.

4. A carry-case would be a useful accessory to be included in the box.

The product "does what it says on the tin".

As a basic no bells and whistles SatNav the Navman F10 Car GPS Receiver works fine, finds the satellite reasonably quickly and plots the route rapidly. If you leave the route (accidentally or deliberately) it quickly replots an alternative route (after instructing you a couple of times to "perform a U-turn").

The box contains the F10, an in-car power lead and a suction mount and Quick Start Guide. The latter is very basic, but I found the NavMan fairly intuitive to use.

It does seem a little mean not to include a Connectivity Kit and a SD card in the box. The kit comprises a USB cable and installation DVD for £17.50 inc P&P, especially as the kit is necessary to to update maps, postcodes and safety camera data all of which you have to buy at additional cost; and the card is necessary for extra maps (again extra cost). The requirement of the Con Kit and card for upgrading is stated on the website

My NavMan started rebooting and lost favourites I had entered. Tech support quickly helped to solve the problem which consisted of purchasing the Con Kit and reloading. Although in all fairness I could have returned it to NavMan (at my own expense) for re-loading under warranty, but I felt with one software "failure" it only needed another for me to practically recoup the cost.

This last episode downgraded my rating from Good to Average.
