MYSTIC RIVER merited Clint Eastwood an Oscar for Best Director, but perhaps not Best Picture because it concludes with too many loose ends and thus fails as a conventional morality play. A rough justice of sorts was at least served in Clint's Oscar-winning UNFORGIVEN.
In the opening sequence, three boyhood pals - Jimmy, Dave and Sean - are playing on the streets of Boston. Jimmy goads the other two into defacing a freshly-poured square of concrete sidewalk. A car pulls up, apparently carrying two plain-clothes cops, one of whom berates the lads for their antisocial behavior. Ultimately, Dave is carried off by the police, ostensibly to be driven home and reported to his mother. In fact, the officers are child molesters in disguise, and Dave is cruelly abused in a cellar for four days before he escapes.

Decades later, the three still live in Boston. Jimmy (Sean Penn), now a tough-guy ex-con, runs a neighborhood convenience grocery. He's married with three daughters, the oldest being Katie (Emmy Rossum), the apple of his eye. Dave (Tim Robbins), a handyman, is married with one son. Sean (Kevin Bacon) is a homicide investigator with the Boston PD.

Late one night, Dave arrives home with a mangled hand and a superficial slash across his stomach. He claims he was attacked by a mugger, and in the ensuing struggle perhaps killed his assailant. The next morning, the police receive report of an abandoned car with a bloodied interior and a bullet hole in the driver's seat back. The vehicle turns out to be Katie's, and her corpse is soon found in a nearby park. She's been brutally beaten and fatally shot after, apparently, being pursued by her killer. Sean is assigned as lead investigator.

Dave's wife Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) scans the dailies expecting to find report of the dead mugger. Such never appears, and a corrosive doubt eats at her mind. Whom did Dave really kill?

The three principals in this gritty, take-no-prisoners piece (Penn, Robbins, and Bacon) give three noteworthy performances. Those of Penn and Robbins are particularly excellent, and merited Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations respectively.

The core of MYSTIC RIVER is not the procedural identification of Katie's killer. Indeed, there are glaring logic lapses as both Jimmy and Sean seek the answer. Moreover, the involvement of the latter and the BPD serve only as the socially acceptable and expected counterpoint to a plot that has little to do with a legal resolution to the crime. Rather, it's an unrelentingly dark tale of deep emotional disturbances resulting from severe childhood trauma, and the potential for extra-legal, primal violence inherent in the philosophy "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do". I found the film's ending unsatisfying because of its loose ends. But that's not overly important, because the unsettling nature of Eastwood's message is embodied in the Getting There and not the Destination.

You might think that MYSTIC RIVER is a Guy Flick. But that the female of the species also has a role to play in tribalism is indicated by the message given Jimmy by his wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) in the last minutes of the film. One tough babe, that.

"Mystic River" DVD with Sean Penn

I was very pleasantly surprised with this DVD 'Mystic River' and I thought it an extremely wlel written, directed and scripted Film. The story is harrowing and at times you just couldn't take your eyes from it in case you missed something. The acting is superb by all of the cast, and the story was very believeable and Sean Penn as the murdered 19-year girl's Dad was unsurpassable. There were no big names in the film but all of them deserved an Academy Award and not just the two.Tim Robbins was the best I ever seen hin in a Movie, and Lawrence Fishburne & Kevin Bacon as the Detectives were superbly cast in these roles. The film follows the three boys,David is the one who is taken by two men pretending to be Policemen, and he is able to effect an escape at a later date, and the film then moves to the three as adults......I will never forget this film,it was moving and you feel drawn in turn to different characters as the film unfolds.

Not to be confused with the early Julia Roberts film, 'Mystic Pizza' ...
On the streets of Boston three lads pass time by playing ball games in the street. One day, bored and fed up they decide to make patterns in the fresh concrete pavement left by workmen. A passing car stops and a man gets out. He begins to tell the boys off and makes Dave get in his car. The man says he's going to see Dave's parents. But Dave goes missing.
Top film, top cast ... if you don't shed at least one tear, male or female, then you're dead from the neck up :)

  Dark and disturbing
Review created: 02/03/09(updated 02/03/09)

A disturbing, powerful film with well deserved Oscar wins for both Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. Beautifully directed by Clint Eastwood, this film tackles difficult issues including child abuse, murder, police corruption and the treatment of people with mental health issues. Tim Robbins plays an emotionally damaged man Dave, who was abused as a child, and has mental health issues. As in real life, this colours the way he is viewed and treated by others, including his friends and wife; so much so that he is made a scapegoat and sacrificial lamb. Sean Penn is dominant throughout as the confident but grieving Jimmy, elevated to the untouchable status by both the police, his community and wife, who forgive him everything even when he does the unthinkable.

Not a bad film. It could be a little slow at times. You need to watch it intently without interuption. Worth a look though

I was exceedingly disappointed with this movie. It seemed to me to be soul-less. Maybe I just didn't 'get it', but I'm an afficianado when it comes to movies, so why didn't this one grab me? It has top actors, top cameramen... and Clint Eastwood directing. So, what went wrong? I think Mr Eastwood was trying too hard to impress his followers. Of course, like The Emperors' New Clothes, none of his fans will criticise him... thus he can get away with shoddy directing. This for me was a 'no no'!

Some seriously heavyweight names have stepped up to put their names to this film, Clint Eastwood & Sean Penn to name but two. I won't go into the story, it is quite complex and not hugely relevant here. I have to say i have seen better from everyone. Kevin Bacon was better in Apollo 13. Clint Eastwood made a much better film in Million Dollar Baby. Sean Penn was much better in The assassination of Richard Nixon.I know what i expect from a film can effect my enjoyment and with these names i expected a great film, unfortunately it is not great. You can see Clint warming up to Million dollar baby but Sean Penn is one of the greatest actors out there today and the role just didn't demand what he is capable of. That said the film is enjoyable, if you can describe a dark film such as this as enjoyable. I dont think i would recomend it unless you particularly like the actors. It reminded me hugely of Sleepers, despite having Brad Pitt in it, if you havn't seen either go for Sleepers it is much better.

Mystic River - a dark disturbing experience
Review created: 21/03/09

3 childhood friends are thrown together years later in adulthood when the daughter of one of them is murdered. One of the 3 is now a policeman investigating the case, and suspicion falls on the third friend. The 3 are played by the fine actors Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and the under-rated Kevin Bacon. This is a thoughtful film. There are no explosions, shootouts or car chases etc. There is a fine build up of tension and a twist at the end, which I didn't see coming, which leaves you thinking about the frailties of human nature. Superbly acted and well directed by Clint Eastwood.

Competantly Told Yarn with good acting
Review created: 18/02/09

Not an earth shatteringly good film but convincing performances all round and competent direction by Clint Eastwood (who also wrote the score interestingly enough). It is a drama thriller dealing with themes of the consequences of child abuse, misplaced loyalties, misguided manhood amongst others.
I've only recently been aware of Kevin Bacon (who is good as a police detective in this), he was the sadist paedophile borstal officer in Sleepers. Sean Penn and Tim Robbins are also great.
I'll probably sell this on or give it away but I'm pleased I saw it.
