Karma says buy this dvd....

This is a genius idea for a series - trailer trash lawbreaker, Earl Hickey, (Jason Lee on top form) wins lottery and, whilst high on morphine in hospital, discovers a slightly wonky version of the ancient concept of karma (put at its simplest: good actions bring good back to you, bad actions bring bad fortune). He writes a list of all his past wrongdoings & sets out on a quest (with his um, rather slow, brother, Randy - superbly played by Ethan Suplee) to repair the damage he's done to others.
Each episode attempts to remedy at least one bad deed from the list, but the path to achieving this is rarely simple, sometimes pretty surreal and always totally hilarious.
Some people have criticised the fact that Earl doesn't work through his list in any set order, instead he reacts to apparently random incidents which he believes that karma has sent him. In my opinion, this is essential to keeping the series interesting and reinforcing the idea that he's being driven by karmic forces. (There's a great Wikipedia page on My Name Is Earl, which I'd recommend if you're interested in knowing more about the series, especially the whole karma thing).
There's a fantastic ensemble cast here, too. As well as Jason Lee & Ethan Suplee in the main roles as the Hickey brothers, there's the laid-back, gentle Darnell, aka the Crabman (Eddie Steeples), now married to Earl's devious ex-wife Joy (Jaime Pressly) and the motel maid Catalina (Nadine Velazquez) with the disturbingly dark past. Characters are way more than one-dimensional stereotypes, though - for example, Joy is also shown as a fabulously loving mother, even if she may not be a traditional one!
Can't think of a duff moment in Series 1, it's all top class & definitely well worth buying. I'd seen most of the episodes on TV already, but they didn't lose anything on repeat viewing. They were just as funny & entertaining second time around. The bits I've caught of Series 2 (now showing on C4 in the UK) has not seemed quite as strong, maybe a bit darker, but I'll be queuing up to buy it when it's released on DVD.
