My Lucky Stars - A Classic Collaboration
Review created: 04/04/07

My Lucky Stars is a classic collaboration between Hong Kong's finest stars. Sammo Hung, Yuen Baio and Jackie Chan star in this, the second in the Lucky Stars series (not to be confused with the 3rd "My Lucky Stars 2: Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars"). The series is also refered to as "Winners & Sinners", this being Winners & Sinners 2.

Although featuring more of Sammo Hung and Yuen Baio than Jackie Chan the film is a must for fans. The film contains a mix of slapstick humour and kung fu; kind of like an Eastern "Carry-On". The stunts and choreography extend well away from the standard fight scenes you may expect from this team.

You have to give the dubbing benefit of the doubt but if you can tolerate its inadequacies you're in for a treat.

Jackie Chan is a cop investigating a diamond theft in Japan. When his partner is captured by Yakuza he has to rely on his crooked childhood friends to bail him out. The film follows his orphanage siblings as they are recruited for the job and then come to his aid. The film culminates in a comic fight scene combining great stunts with a few semi-humorous martial arts styles.

Despite being part of a series, it is possible to watch this film in its own right without seeing any of the others.

Most commanly known as the second part in a string of successful films for Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. My Lucky Stars might not be the best Jackie Chan film as he is barely in the film, (for completists only -- or the people who love getting Hong Kong Legends dvds) its mainly a Sammo Hung film with Jackie popping in now and then to demonstraight his martial arts skills.
The plot and humour never really translate too well, so unless you like the slapstick nature of 80s Hong Kong films then youll probably not enjoy this, The second best thing, apart from the fights odviously is the dvd commentary by Hong Kong Cinema exepert Bey Logan -- he does the best commentaries ever. Full of extremely interesting stuff, seriously, you should check them out if you have the time. To sum up theres a good start.. skip the middle.. good last 20mins when the fights come thick and fast.

Excelent film. Sammo, Jackie and Yuen all give excelent performances. The Lucky Stars are hilarious even if the comedy is a bit regional.

A gem fron the golden age of Hong Kong cinema!
