Love is here to stay; so is her family!

A young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.

Fab film well worth watching if you haven't seen it. A film for all the family to enjoy. A modern day version of the ugly duckling kinda thing and finding happiness. I love a happy ending.

I liked the condition of the product, but slightly disappointed that the disc had a bit more scratchs than i expected but that was easily fixed.
The film has in my oppion stuck to real life bases cause the film to feel more real and that people of any religion, any culture can achieve their dreams. Over all it was quite good.

Well worth the watch for those of you with Greek connections. This is a comedy that could be so true to life. When you marry a Greek you marry their family!

I love this film as I come from a large family that loves eating so I can really relate to the story. Me and the rest of the women in my family often meet up put on face masks eat too much chocolate and watch this picking out which character is most like them. A fantastic buy for a girls night in.

A fantastic film, good for an family with older children. I have been able to watch the film again and again and still find it funny. The main character is plain, but that is part of the films charm and makes it more real life than if they had cast a stunning woman in her place. More of a chick flick than a mens film though. Just a fantastic watch!

  Good early naughties film
Review created: 18/05/09

Well it's a typical 'chick flick' story for sure, geeky girl gets a makeover and a guy, but whats up with that? its not done in an insulting way,I am the type of gal who hasn't watched many rubbish chick flicks actually, 'knocked up' and anything about fertility/man problems with jennifer aniston in makes me want to remove my eyes with pliers.

ANYWAY this is a lovely film, more of a comedy, there are some hilarious moments in it. And it has a happy ending :), though its a few years old now its so appropriate in this economic climate, as we all want a few laughs.

The funniest film I have ever seen!
Review created: 03/04/09

It is without a doubt one of the funniest films of all time, if you are Greek or not! it is very emotional and heart warming, and i think everyone can see a bit of themselves in at least one character!
it's a story of love- tradition- family- and of course with some of the funniest moments in movie history!
please buy and enjoy because it is definatly worth seeing, only if all you get out of it is learning a bit about greek culture!

Good film..lovely insight into a greek family. I'd seen the film before and enjoyed it so decided to get a copy for myself to keep.
It's got some good one liners in it that bring a smile to my face.

Overall it's a good film that you can watch more than once so that's why I decided to add it to my collection.

  Charming and hilarious
Review created: 03/10/08

Toula Portokalos is a single thirty years old Greek woman, living with her parents and brother in a Chicago Greek community. After convincing her father to go to the university, she meets the non-Greek Ian Miller and they decide to get married. Her father does not accept the wedding of his daughter with a non-Greek man.

I found this film charming and hilarious! I watched this film 3 times the same day. Very easy to watch and I couldn't get enough of it. I wouln't say its for girls only, my boyfriend quite liked it too, even though he was reading a book at the same time (but he is a multi-tasker).

  My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Review created: 21/04/08

The movie is centered on Toula, a Greek-American woman (Nia Vardalos, who also wrote the script), who falls in love with a non-Greek American, Ian Miller (played by John Corbett). The movie also examines the protagonist's relationship with her family, with their cultural heritage and value system, which is sometimes rocky but ends with mutual appreciation.
Toula is going through an early midlife crisis. At thirty, she is the only woman in her family who has failed in Greek terms: she has not "married a Greek boy, made Greek babies, and fed everyone". Because of these "failures", Toula is stuck running the family business, a restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's". In contrast to her 'perfect' sister, Toula is a frumpy, cynical character who can barely articulate her desires and merely wishes for happiness. Now thirty, she fears she's doomed to be stuck with her life as it is.
At the restaurant, she encounters Ian Miller, a school teacher. His presence reminds her of the nearby city college, which she's considered for some time, secretly looking at their catalogs. With mom Maria's help, she talks Gus into letting her sign up for computer classes, which she says she can use to help improve the business. Now caring more about her appearance, she abandons her unflattering eyeglasses for contact lenses and begins to wear makeup and attractive dresses. A bulletin at the school announces a seminar for computer systems related to travel agencies. Toula's Aunt Voula runs such an agency, and Toula decides to change jobs to work for her aunt. With her aunt and mother, she engages in an intricate scheme to convince her father that it was his idea to allow her to work for the travel agency so that he will allow Toula to leave the restaurant business.
Toula feels much better in her new job, especially when she notices Ian hanging around looking at her though the window. They finally introduce themselves and go out for dinner. Ian at first does not recognize that she is the once-frumpy waitress from Zorba's, but when he does, he tells Toula that he wishes to spend time with her.
The affair quickly becomes a passionate whirlwind courtship which Toula keeps secret from her family until some weeks later. Toula's cousin Nikki warns Toula that a nosy neighbor saw her kissing Ian and told the family. Gus throws a fit because Ian is Xenos (Greek), a foreigner. Ian politely asks permission to continue seeing her, but Gus stubbornly refuses. Toula and Ian still manage to visit his apartment, where their relationship becomes more intimate. Toula meets Ian's upper-middle class, WASP parents for the first time, who are as reserved as her family is demonstrative.
Ian proposes, she accepts, and Gus is ultimately forced to accept their relationship. Ian readily agrees to convert to the Greek Orthodox faith in order to be worthy of Toula, and is baptized in traditional fashion. At the family's Easter festival, Ian confesses he is a vegetarian - a brief crisis for the entire family ensues - and he has a lot of trouble pronouncing Greek words. (He tries to say Khristos Anesti (Christ is risen), and it comes out Cheese straws are nasty.) This becomes a popular running gag with Toula's younger brother Nick. When Ian asks how to say "thank you" to Toula's mom Maria, Nick gives him the words "Oréa viziá," - "Nice boobs!".
As the year passes the wedding planning hits snag after snag as Toula's relatives "helpfully" interfere. Toula is horrified to learn that her parents invited

Great story about family life, love not just in the traditional sense (male-female), but love between parent - child, brothers and sisters.
Uplifting comedy that will make you laugh out loud again and again!
Very down to earth portrayal of family life

THE CHARACTERS WERE OK ALTHOUGH I NEVER REALLY TOOK TO THE MAIN CHARACTER...I THINK SHE WAS JUST TOO PLAIN!!WHICH IN HINDSIGHT IS A BAD THING FOR ME TO THINK...NOT EVERYONE IN THIS LIFE IS STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL.MAYBE SHE JUST DIDNT PORTRAY HER CHARACTER AS WELL AS SHE COULD HAVE DONE

This is a fantastic comedy. It shows part of greek culture and life mostly of the Greeks living abroad. It is a small example of the Great Greek thinking.

  Funny film about differing cultures
Review created: 09/02/08
by:

The film not only showed humorously the difference our cultures can be but also how families interact and how we can unite. It is an enjoyable film that you can laugh along to and at many times see your only family in. Many people would enjoy it but especially those thinking about marriage and seeing how others have problems but in the end things somehow work out...
