Album Notes Personnel: C.J. Chenier (vocals, accordion, alto saxophone); Harry Hypolite (vocals, guitar); Selwyn Cooper (guitar); Wayne Burns (bass); Joseph Edwards (drums); Cleveland Chenier (rubboard).Recorded at Bay Records, Berkeley, California. Includes liner notes by Lee Hidebrand. This is the real deal, obviously. C.J. is the son of Clifton Chenier, who is to zydeco what James Brown is to soul--i.e., the godfather--and the music here is very traditionalist and stripped down (sometimes, as in "Blue Flame Blues" it dispenses with the bass altogether). Chenier has nonetheless lived in the real world enough to be influenced by non-zydeco sources. His "I'm Coming Home," for example, owes a major debt to Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home," and his "She's My Woman," would be unthinkable without the R&B standard "Turn on Your Love Light." Even more far afield, guitarist Harry Hypolite contributes a "Harry's Big Mama Blues" in which he appears to be channeling the ghost of Howlin' Wolf. | |||||||||||||
