Muppet Treasure Island

Brian Henson once again broke the mould with his version of the classic story of pirates, lost treasure and one legged pirates.
Young Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop) accompanied by the Great Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat are given a treasure map by their friend Billy Bones (Billy Connelly) and when the inn where they work is destroyed by pirates they set out to find a sponsor willing to fund a search for the tresure marked by the traditional X.
The voyage is funded by Fozzy the Bear and captained by Kermit the Frog, in the part of Captain Smollet. Jim and co meet the cook Long John Silver, a part played to perfection by Tim Curry. Jim becomes firm friends with the cook and makes the mistake of abandoning his true friends until he learns of the mutinous plans of Silver and many of the other crew members.
The legendary Kermit in the leading role (as far as the Muppets go) demonstrates his wisdom, good morals and mistakes as the captain of the ship! It's no surprise to see his other half, Miss Piggy, turn up in the role of Benjamina Gun, who was marooned on the island after Kermit left her standing at the altar.
The story culminates in an all out war between the two parties and victory for the Muppets! Rizzo the Rat cashes in on his Rat Cruise in the meantime and the Muppet Jazz band pull some fantastic songs out of their collective hats.
There are a number of nice extras on the DVD itself including: a documentary about the making of the movie with interviews from certain members of the cast and crew. There is a feature length commentary from the director Brian Henson which are always very interesting, and finally a sing along bonus that is wonderful for the kids.
Overall, 'The Muppets Treasure Island' is a fresh and new perspective on an old classic, and the muppets make it much more appealing to children, allowing them to enjoy classics such as 'Treasure Island' as well as adults. With a great cast, a great selection of songs that you just won't get out of your head (at least not for a while anyway), and plenty of jokes this films a winner and highly recommended, especially if you have young children.
