Good Deeds

Having been a big fan of Adam Sandler for quite a while now and having seen just about all of his movies to date, i can say that 'Mr Deeds' is certainly amongst his best. Unfortunately i have not yet seen the original film 'Mr Deeds Goes To Town' from 1936, so i can't really compare them, but from watching the extras on the DVD you get the impression that the makers have tried to be as loyal to the original as possible, but just made it a bit more modern.
When his rich uncle Preston Blake dies, Longfellow Deeds finds out that he has inherited forty billion dollars and is a majority shareholder in a huge media company. He goes over to New York while papers are drawn up by the leading people in the company, eager for control, for Deeds to sell his shares. He soon starts making friends with the stars and spreading the country values to the people of the city.
However, meanwhile TV reporter Babe Bennet is sent to try and 'get in' with Deeds so that she can get exclusive footage of him doing all kinds of things such as saving a woman and her seven cats from a burning building and then put it one national TV. When the people who want to buy Deeds's shares make sure that he finds out about whats been going on he sells and leaves, only to find out soon after that the company is being sold bit by bit and thousands of people fired.
Sandler is right at home as the loveable Longfellow Deeds, dishing out plenty of his great brand of comedy that fans come back time and again to see. The lovely Winona Ryder is also great in her role as Babe Bennet a.k.a virgin school nurse Pam Dawson. The usual Adam Sandler crew are also around to add to the fun; Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi, Peter Dante etc, which fans will recognise from just about every other Sandler film so far.
There are a whole stack of extras on the DVD including three nice featurettes with behind the scenes footage and interviews with various cast and crew members describing how the film was made etc, a number of deleted scenes, an outtakes reel, a feature length commentary with the director Steve Brill and the writer Tim Herlihy, selected filmographies for Sandler, Ryder, the director etc, a music video, and finally a fun little extra, which is a series of animated greeting cards voiced by Adam Sandler for various occassions and when you put the disc into your computer you can actually send the cards to people.
Overall, 'Mr Deeds' is definately amongst Sandlers best films so far and if he continues to make them like this throughout the rest of his career i for one will be pretty happy. If you are a fan of Adam Sandler, you have seen the original movie 'Mr Deeds Goes to Town' from 1936 and liked it but now want a mordern version, or you just want a really funny film to entertain you for a couple of hours, this is in'Deed' for you!
