Comedy genius - a true classic!!

In 1979, Monty Python's Life of Brian struck a chord with the devoted, and the condemnations came loud and strong. Though it actually had little to do with the Messiah or his wisdom, this liturgical laugh-fest from Britain's rock stars of comedy was considered sacrilegious.

It's sad to say it, but Life of Brian

The more fundamental question, however, was why Monty Python (Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and Terry Gilliam), who spent their BBC/PBS series skewering British uptightness, take on the sacrosanct subject of the Savior? In fact, Brian does not lampoon Jesus Christ, his teachings or his importance as a religious icon. Indeed, it's more a scathing satire on mob mentality, government bureaucracy, and cult ideology.

It was Eric Idle who first threw out the idea of a religious epic. After the successful medieval spoof, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the troupe was looking for another genre to deconstruct. Someone suggested the old-fashioned Cecil B. DeMille Bible ballyhoo and Idle visualized a send-up of Christianity. With a working title, "Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory," the debaucherous brainstorming began. They came up with the story of Brian (played with grace and goofiness by Chapman), the reluctant prophet, a simple man constantly mistaken for the King of the Jews. From his birth in a manger right next door to Christ's, to his unexplained rise as a spiritual emblem for the sheep-like folks of Judea, Brian remains an incorruptible innocent, even amid massive upheaval.

Life of Brian's cleverly crafted script stretches stupidity to its limits. And it's become even more relevant, as events in the Middle East escalate. The film explores extremism, the Romans' bullying set against the violent elements within the Jewish community. Brian's odyssey has him falling into a political party (The People's Front of Judea, not to be confused with the Judean People's Front), dead set on freeing their homeland from the crucifying influence of Rome.

Of course, the movie takes time out from its philosophizing for classic Python skits, as when the stoning of a Jehovah-spouting heretic becomes a short sketch plot stop. And when Brian is given the task of graffito-tagging a government wall with the Latin phrase for "Romans Go Home!", the lesson in the dead language by John Clesse's cranky Centurion is another spoof of public education.

This is without doubt one of the funniest films ever created, I watch it probably about once a year, and find myself repeating it's well known phrases for months afterwards.

If you're a Python fan, or if you're not, this is a great film, a British classic!!!!

Because of my zany sense of humour, i gave this film a 5! the script and the team from the Monty Python team is absolutely funny in this film, okay again in some form you can decipher some form of opinion of looking at the pros and cons of the film subject, but if you avoid all that and just see the film for what is? its funny and brilliant comedy, John cleese as the knight is fantastic to the ones who have not watched the film i will not spoil it!.

The Comedy is superb and you will keep laughing through the film, an epic.

buy it! you know it makes sense! 5/5

This film was recently voted the best comedy film of all time on channel 4 & channel 5. As a christian some people might think it a bit odd that i regard this as my favourite film of all time, but you have to remember that it is about Brian not Jesus. If you have never seen this film you must! An all time classic not to be missed.

Pure comedy genious.

This film may not be to everyones taste, it does require quite an aquired comical taste. But for any monty python fan (and anyone else for that matter) there are many classical moments occur in this film. People remember scenes from films such as the italian job, because they're random and have a catchy little... well, catchphrase I guess. Anyone that has seen the Life of Brian will likely remember some scenes too, a true sign of a good film!

Any person with deep christian morals may find this film slightly offensive (although it is a comedy, there isn't really a need for such) as it does have biblical reference.

I had this on video and loaned it out, never to get it back and was thrilled to be able to get my hands on this DVD. This cult classic is very funny and is a delite to watch over and over again. Really pleased with the quality, but living overseas it was not comparable with our systems here. However it worked perfectly on my portable player. Perfect excuse to watch in bed.

Bought the dvd for my husband because we had never seen the film all the way through. Happened to coincide with a BBC re run on digital telly which we missed, followed by reviews and the controversy it made at the time. Neither of our parents would let us see it at the time.

Typically brilliant Monty python.Life of Brian is brilliantly written and absolutely hilarious. Not for the sanctimonious and pious. I have a strong faith but do not feel any conflict with the the irreverence of the story line. Brian is not Jesus, just another life running a parallel which highlights some of the idiocy of human kind.I think it is a funny reflection of the stupidity of the the human condition. The final scene brings it to a rather abrupt and premature end, but totally memorable . I just can't get the song out of my head, nor do I want to as it is cheerfully uplifting. British humour at its best.
Only thing I didn't like was that as a digitally remastered dvd I was a little disappointed with the grainy picture.

This is a hilarious film which, in my view, is not offensive (to religion). The "stoning" scene is really original, I loved the idea of the woman carrying the poorly donkey! It was a pity Brian died at the end, even though the crucifiction produced one of the best scenes in the film.

The birth of the Christ, follow the leader and the Roman empire as only the Python's could. Classic comedy that remains comic even after dozen's of viewing's. This is truly the best Python film ever made.
So follow Brian through his troubled life from birth to crusifiction in this brilliant piece of British cinema.
And remember, he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy!

Excellent film. Really funny. The Monty Python team really excelled themselves with this film as in my opinion it is not a send up up of Jesus but the human race. A timeless classic. I have always wanted this film as a once only veiwing is not enough to grasp everything that happens.
Delightful.

It's such a brilliant movie and so very funny. I'm a Christian but I am not offended by the movie at all as nowhere does Brian claim to be Christ. It's a good mickey taking of the pomposity of the church and the ease with which misunderstandings happen.

I recommend it to anyone needing a good laugh. It doesn't date and my only complaint about it is that once I hear the songs they stay in my head for days! Arrgh! I think 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' is one of the best ever.

I bought it cos the video we have of it is now very old and worn and I love watching 'Life of Brian' every now and then.

I wish I were seeing it again for the second time but not the 5th. I was disappointed to feel that i knew it too well.. It's the 'Borat' of its day.Excellent performances, fun, history, culture and loads of wonderful laughs.Nowhere does the film make fun of Jesus but only of organised religeon and of us humans beings.

  MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN
Review created: 30/01/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Centred around the time of Jesus of Nazareth it follows the unlikely character, Brian - a hapless hero who is confused, horny, and constantly mistaken for the Messiah. Brian just wants to be left alone, and to pursue his love for Judith, a member of the People's Front of Judea. Judith just wants the Romans to go home; but only after they've left the sanitation, the medicine, education, irrigation, roads, public order, etc., etc. ... oh and don't forget the wine!

Will Brian's love for Judith go unrequited? Will only the cheese makers be blessed, or does this refer to all manufacturers of dairy products?

It's subtle; it's anarchic; and it's possibly still banned in Norway. This is classic Phython comedy at its best !!! 10/10.

  Absolute Python Genious
Review created: 25/08/07

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The best of the python films by far: witty, controversial, surreal and dangerously funny. Unlike films such as "Meaning of Life", "Life of Brian" carries a consistent plot-line throughout, based around the character of Brian Cohen (Graham Chapman) who is mistakenly identified as the messiah, and becomes embroiled in the activities of bureaucratic resistance group the "People's Front of Judea", due to their mutual hatred of the occupying Romans. I won't spoil the ending, but what could be perceived as quite dark from a written description must be seen to be believed.

Every second line carries humour in some form, and the pace just never lets up. Every character is totally individual, despite each of the 6 regular pythons playing an average of 7-8 characters each. The film faced a lot of flack from religious groups, but any reasonable person watching it would surely find it impossible to take offence. It is a satire, and it is critical of organised religion, but it never goes beyond it's innocently humorous intentions.

The extras are a 50 minute documentary on the making of the film, plus a few trailers. The antics of the Pythons of-camera are enjoyable to watch, but hardly insightful. A commentary track would have been much more welcome. Basically, you're buying this for the quality of the feature (which is, incidentally, significantly improved over any previous release).

If you're a fan of dry humour, or have seen a little Python before and you're still not sure what to think, watch this now! As what surely must be one of the most quoted films in history, you would be mad to miss it.
