What a treat. The Monsters and the energetic little toddler, Boo, are not just cute, they're great personalities too - and so well animated. The film's entertaining from start to finish and a couple of the extras are as good as the film, in their own short way. Some of the good things on this DVD:

A wonderful story. The world of the monsters runs on the power of screams that the monsters have to generate by scaring human children. They have a whole industry dedicated to extracting these blood-curdling shrieks from the poor, terrified little kids. Each child is matched with its ideal monster and their monster passes from the power factory in Monstropolis through one of thousands of bedroom closet doors - one for each child - into the child's bedroom where it carries out its job and the resulting scream is captured in a flask. The monsters have to be very careful though because they believe that children are highly toxic and can kill them with a touch. The monsters are actually tremendously alarmed at the prospect of contact with a human child. If only the children knew ....

Excellent characters. The main ones are outstanding. The little girl, Boo is too cute to mention. Sulley (big, woolly, top scoring scarer) and Mike (small, walking eyeball and Sulley's best friend and assistant) have all the usual concerns of the average working man and they're also funny. Mike has a girl friend (she may be my favourite). She has one eye and snakes for hair. When she gets romantic with Mike, her snakes get all romantic with him too. When she gets angry with Mike, they all rattle their tails and glare and hiss. Those animators must have been inspired. What a clever idea. Randle, Boo's special monster - the one that really scares her - moves like a centipede. He's a real villain with a wicked plot go maximise scream power.

Brilliant extras. In particular two short animated films: "For the Birds" and "Mike's New Car". I've watched them more times than I've watched the main film. Both are very funny. I've found that I can't even think about "For the Birds" without starting to laugh. There's one scene in the film where several of the small, quarrelsome birds are taking the Mickey out of the big, friendly bird - pulling faces and bristling their feathers. You'll need to see it to believe how funny this is.

I recommend this DVD. It'll be played over and over again.

Yet another good disney film, it's actually rare you get a bad one. Great animation and a decent story line. However it lacked the cutting edge that animated films such as Finding Nemo, Ice Age or Shrek had. Mike wozolski was amusing throughout and there was a couple of really funny moments. Certainly worth watching that's for sure, but if you have really young children they may tend to find some scenes a bit scary, so it's a great excuse for adults to watch it first!

Another classic from Disney/Pixar - great for kids, great for parents
We bought this for our daughters (aged 3, 4 and 7), but underneath it all, we (the parents) really wanted to see it. It's great! Colourful ,witty, attention-grabbing, happy-ending - everything you'd expect fromm the makers of Toy Story.
John Goodman (from the Flinstones etc) and Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally, Analyse This etc) are the voices behind the central characters, Sulley and Mike, and the wit of their double-act is not lost on the children and made us laugh a lot. In case you're worried that the story line and some of the scenes (Monsters Inc creating energy from the screams of children whose bedrooms are visited by the company's employees, the monsters) may scare your children, do not worry. It is all done in the best possible taste and in a way that led, for us, to no sleepless or disturbed nights.
Enjoy!

Disney’s two-dimensional traditional output is in serious danger of being completely superseded by its CGI-rendered counterparts. After Toy Stories one and two and the diverting Bug’s Life, Pixar continue to hog Disney’s limelight (and critical acclaim, and ticket sales…) with Monsters Inc., a charming, funny and visually breath-taking cartoon adventure.
While the Toy Story films appealed to adults as much as children with their brilliantly witty scripts and deceptively complex storylines, Monster’s Inc. is aimed squarely at the kids and although it conceivably works as a satire on workplace politics (no, honestly), anyone watching it purely on such a level is likely to become impatient with the sheer niceness on display.

The main creatures are wonderful creations. Rounded in both character and visual design and brilliantly voiced (as ever in a Disney film) this time by the likes of John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi and James Coburn. The plot involves a human moppet who steps through her closet door and into the world of Monstropolis, causing havoc (Monsters aren’t cruel you see, they have to scare kids because their world is powered by ‘scream energy’) because the inhabitants think she’s toxic. The authorities want her contained, but the vast, blue hairy Sully and the green eyeball Mike think she’s sort of cute and try and save her.

The film teems with imaginative ideas and conceits which give way to breathless set-pieces which would never be seen outside a cartoon of this calibre. The chance to present a cast of assorted monsters gives the designers an absolute field day, with creatures of all descriptions and some beyond. Ultimately the film gets a little sentimental for some adults, but then it’s not for adults. Remember that when you steal it from your kids.

I'm such a kid at heart - I love this film! Sully, the sensible hard working monster. Mike, the stubborn but lovable monster and Boo, the little girl who comes along and melts their hearts!!
Brilliant for kids, not scary at all despite the story line - the scariness of the monsters is handled in such a way that it becomes funny.
I laughed so hard at this film, and I swear I nearly cried at the end - Well worth adding to your collection. Great for pulling out on a rainy day!

  A parents' lifesaver!

I'm writing this review specifically from the point of view of a father with a 2 year old who loves this film. It is a great movie with lots of laughs and lovely animation. However, the best thing about this film is that it has decent plot and, as another viewer mentioned, you keep seeing more things buried in the background on repeat viewing. This is vital when you have a 2 year old who wants to watch it again, and again, and again, and again (you get the idea) Most childrens' movies are mildly entertaining for adults when watched the first time, bearable the second and actively irritating after that. This one stands repeated adult viewing without making you want to kill yourself.

  Pixars Best Animation
Review created: 15/04/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm now twenty nine years old, have no children and am not at all ashamed to have this great film in my DVD collection.
Undoubtedly Pixar films are the greatest example of computer generated animation, with only the two Shrek films coming close from other studios. Pixar can boast creating Toy Story 1 & 2, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, A Bugs Life and more recently Cars (which I've yet to see), and as good as all these "childrens" films are Monsters, Inc. is my favorite.
I'm sure children and adults alike will be delighted by the adventures of the big wooly monster James P. "Sulley" Sullivan, his one eyed, green skinned assistant Mike Wazowski and the adorable infant Boo. It's one movie I still find funny, even after repeated viewings.
The cast is perfect, with John Goodman and Billy Crystal brilliant as the voices of the lead characters. Other voices to listen out for are those of Steve Buscemi, the late James Coburn, Frank Oz (Yoda, Miss Piggy) and John Ratzenberger (whose voice appears in all of Pixars movies).
The discs bonus features include the short animations Mike's New Car and the Oscar Winning For The Birds, both of which are fantastic and worth watching again and again.
To summarize this is an essential purchase for parents and for those who are still young at heart.

Pixar hits all the right notes, working at lots of levels to entertain all ages. Great movie.

The plot is excellent and makes sense. In fact, in my view, it makes a damn sight more sense than the Matrix. For the uninitiated, the premise here is that the monsters need to pass through special portals to scare children, as that is how they get their energy. The plot of Matrix is that all humans are keps in battery pods to extract energy, while our minds are sustained in an entirely artificial universe in order to keep them from getting too bored and switching off our bodies. Call me simple minded, but the Monsters Inc plot makes more sense to me.

The scene in Monsters Inc where they are chasing through the door/ portal warehouse, and in and out of different points on the globe, is stunning.

Another great animated film that appeals to both children and adults. The 'scaryness' of the monsters are more humourous than anything so don't worry about sleepless nights!
The characters are sweet and the story line is irrisistable!
What with the colourful scenes, amazing characters, fantastic story line, you and your children will be able to sit for hours and hours watching it over and over again.

it's a good movie but it isn't one you would watch over and over. I do like the relationships between the characters and it has a good well thought out plot but after the second time you watch it it gets to be so predictable that it isn't amusing any more. kids will love this and adults will too but the adults will probaly get tiered of it long before the kids.

Monsters inc. A superb pixar film!

If any age group watches this specatcular movie they will see that its not just for the children!

The story is set in the fictional city of Monstropolis , where the two of the main characters live: James P Sullivan otherwise known as Sully and his best friend Mike .Both are monsters yet intersting ones at that: Sully is a big blue hairy monster and Mike is a short round one eyed lime green one.

The story works around the fact that Mike and Sully both work in a power plant that delivers electricity to monstropolis. The intersting part is that they get this energy by entering childrens doors at night and scaring them till they scream. Its this scream that is used to power the city. Randal is Sully's rival and both are vying for the screaming record
However one day at work things go terribly wrong. Boo a little human girl followed Sully back to his world, where monsters believe that children are toxic. The rest of the story is full of great comedy moments, and is backed up by some of the best pixar animation to date!
The main themes are love, rivalry and truth. The ending is very sad and this is what i think is why people (like myself!) always come back for more!
It is an excellent movie and one of my all time favourites!

Monsters inc...a window into the world of economy
Review created: 25/03/07

I loved the hidden stories behind this fantastic-ly thought out plot, perhaps hiding the agenda of the oil and natural resources monopoly taking place today, Boo! and the children could represent the 3rd nations and Monsters, Inc are no other than corporate America. However, through the eyes of children this movie must be an animated world of wonder where the truth behind the 'monster-in-the-cupboard' lies. Great laughs, and a few moments where kids might feel a taste of terror (!)Great movie, wow!
