Having read the book along time ago I was delighted to come across this dvd recorded in the Eighties starring Paul Mcgann.Based on true events from the 1st world war . The Monocled mutineer is the story of dashing rogue and master of disguise Percy Toplis.Private Toplis was already a chancer and rebel, thanks to his tough childhood.when he arrived at Etaples training camp in Northern France in June 1917.But it was there ,on the eve on the battle of Passchendaele.as the soldiers were put through a brutal training regime.that Toplis instigated a mutiny which would shake the British authorities to the core....
Now a marked man, relying on his skill for impersonating the officer class,Toplis escapes to England where he falls in love with a young Widow.but as the most wanted man in Britain.his struggle for freedom becomes increasingly desperate....
Absolutely brilliant, well written, Produced and directed.and fantastic Acting by the superb Paul Mcgann and cast

Good acting but untrue story. I bought this as a replacement for the video that I had lost. Read the book too and can recommend 'Chasing Percy' which is the true story of Percy Topliss with factual evidence.

I recall seeing "The Monocled Mutineer" on BBC TV in the mid 1980's and remember be captivated by the story. I'm delighted to find that this story is now available in a DVD format and I'm looking forward to seeing this story again. One of the highlights of the story is when "Percy Topliss" sings - Let The Great Big World Keep Turning - to the lady (played by Cherie Kunghi) he meets along his escape route from France to England. Percy (played by Paul McGann)was finaly caught in a little village called Plumtom in Cumria and I understand is buried in the graveyard in Penrith. I recorded this series at the time on a Betamax format but Betamax is no longer. I wrote down the words of the song and often sing it around the North East Folk Clubs - It always goes down well. Percy was a bit of a rouge and master of disguise. The disguise as a Captain helped him escape back over the Channel but as I mentioned above the authorities caught up with him on the old A6 4 miles north of Penrith.
