A very complex issue to cram into a 2 hour DVD but it was very well done. Having just read the Conn Iggulden Tri-ology it makes you realise what a task the film producers had. The scenery was superb and the characters most convincing making an enjoyable film. The bettle scenes are also most convincing.
Well worth viewing.

Stunning visuals and authentic landscapes make this epic movie worth a watch. Thank God Ghengis Khan does not talk with an American accent. The costumes, rituals and manners have been meticulously researched and reproduced. I think anybody who understands the clan system will not be looking for any reason for Ghengis Khan always believing that he was born to be "Khan" and also for pulling out all the stops to achieve his birthright. The director has beautifully captured the soul of such a leader - the scenes where Temudgin is in a cage, knowing and believing with stoic certainty that he is destined to lead, are the essence of the movie. As the old man says, "do not be afraid" is what the whole movie is about.

i did enjoy this movie, but it was lakcing in the amount of war and action that i had expected from the movie as Ghengis Khan did rule 1 third of the world but it lagged alot in war scenes. overall great movie i do recommend the buy!

Not bad, though nothing to write home about.

I bought this DVD after reading the excellent books about the life of Genghis Khan by Conn Iggulden.
The film is disappointing in that it tries to tell too big a story in too short a time. The plot repeatedly leaps forward by several years without any explanation as to what has happened to the characters and the relationships between them in the meantime.
The acting is for the most part very wooden (although this might be an attempt to show the impassivity of the warriors), although the action scenes are pretty impressive.
The best thing about this movie for me was the stunning scenery of the mongolian steppe and a really evocative soundtrack.
You have to rememeber that this is a film made in the Mongol language by a Russian director and I think the cultural difference in storytelling doesn't really work so well for a western audience.
It certainly isn't a bad film but don't believe the sleeve notes hype that claims this movie "Easily rivals Lord of the Rings for sheer scale and mysticism" because it doesn't even come close.

A good first film in the trilogy if a little shy of action. I read the books by Conn Iggulden and the first film mirrors the first book quite well. Although the first book was also a tad lumbering so I'm not sure that's a plus point lol. Character of Ghengis is brooding and at times down right miserable which form the sources I've read on the subject is quite accurate! Films leaves you wanting more but if i knew that beforehand I would have waited for the other 2 films to come out and watch them in a marathon session, which im sure would have increased my enjoyment of this first film 10-fold! In summary, this was worth a watch and well acted! 6.5/10
