Top Reviews Review created: 12/08/06 by: 7 of 10 people found this review helpful. The year is 1929. The place is an gangster-ridden American city run by Leo (Albert Finney). But the real power lies with Tom (Gabriel Byrne), the power behind the man. Their friendship is severed when they both fall in love with the same woman (Marcia Gay Harden) and a bloody gang war erupts... Review ID: 10000000001604314 Was this review helpful? Report this review Reviews Review created: 10/07/08 by: decided to buy it as i'm in to gangster films and own every single one in anyones top ten or even top thrity (except old b+w films), it does have some elements of what i would expect; violence, sex, tension, gangs! and what is more about this film is the touch added by it being a coen brothers film, which you can tell from about ten minutes in. the use of humour and certain dialects is subtle but makes the film what it is and enjoyable. The lighting is particularly effective. Much violence, expected in a gangster film! I had seen this at the cinema, but wanted my own copy-watched it with my 21 year-old daughter who is studying English Literature, currently doing work on films. By chance, we had both seen "No Country for Old Men" recently, and thought it amazing. Lots of blood and guts mixed with humour, again fab lighting/detail. Can't wait for their next production! Report this review I believe this was one of the Coens' first films. So obviously big things are expected. It's a story about rivalry between mobs in an American city, (chicago i think) and during this rivaly, the main boss and his lieutenant argue and fight over a woman, and the lieutanant seeks the employment of a rival mob boss. It's very suspensful, with brutal killings and gore. THere's one bit where the lieutenant is taken into a local forest to check if he has killed the man he's ment to have killed, and you can almost feel your heart pounding. It's very well done, but for some reason I always felt like there was something missing..... Not sure what exactly, but it didn't completely satisfy. Definately worth seeing, and if youv'e liked any of the Coens' other films (such as fargo) then you'll probabably enjoy this one..... Review ID: 10000000005276039 Was this review helpful?
