The year is 1929. The place is an gangster-ridden American city run by Leo (Albert Finney). But the real power lies with Tom (Gabriel Byrne), the power behind the man. Their friendship is severed when they both fall in love with the same woman (Marcia Gay Harden) and a bloody gang war erupts...

  good film
Review created: 10/07/08

decided to buy it as i'm in to gangster films and own every single one in anyones top ten or even top thrity (except old b+w films), it does have some elements of what i would expect; violence, sex, tension, gangs! and what is more about this film is the touch added by it being a coen brothers film, which you can tell from about ten minutes in. the use of humour and certain dialects is subtle but makes the film what it is and enjoyable.

Excellent stuff from the Coen Bros- I LOVE them!
Review created: 11/05/08

Marvellous film, with the usual Coen Bros attention to detail and fabulous camera work. The lighting is particularly effective.
Much violence, expected in a gangster film!
I had seen this at the cinema, but wanted my own copy-watched it with my 21 year-old daughter who is studying English Literature, currently doing work on films.
By chance, we had both seen "No Country for Old Men" recently, and thought it amazing. Lots of blood and guts mixed with humour, again fab lighting/detail.
Can't wait for their next production!
