I bought this DVD to support my Grandson's GCSE English Lit studies. It's a great movie and very faithful to John Steinbeck's novel of the Depression years in the US. Bexause the book is described as a "Novella" - a short, focussed narrative it lends itself to both movie-making and academic study. It is best viewed together with one of the many Study Guides (also freely available on eBay) , and the dvd format means it is easy to find and review specific scenes. Gary Sinese plays George and also directs the film. It is clearly a labour of love. John Malkovich is outstanding as Lennie, the gentle giant with learning difficulties. Some people, having read the book first, feel that Malkovich lacks the physical features such as size and power that they have assumed from their reading. Not so in mu case. I think he plays it well and his body language and non-verbal expressions convey the character well. This DVD is well worth considering either as a support for study or for its own sake.

i bought this film cause my daughter is studying it at schoolin GCSE English and I now 37 yrs remember studying it, and never had the film out so had to just read the book. So for nestalger reasons had to see it, it was very well done, even my 7 year old loved it ...but keeps reminding me about the last scene where the 'cousin' kills Kenny!!!! i forgot that bit was there. Also i have an older sister who has learning disabilities and the film when i read it growing up reminded me of 'our' life to some degree. having to protect her. She also squashed our hamster till one eye was hanging out. She had tremendous strength, when ever she cuddled me she used to hurt me, she is very loving but too strong, she has got better. So ifelt real compassion for both characters. Even though i know the two main charecters were not related, it was if they were.
A very moving story, it really makes you think about persons with that type of disabilities, and that even Kenny had his place in this world, he was the best at manual work and was recognised by his employer. So just cause the less fortunate may not have the same life as us, sometimes its leass complicated and happier.

Makes you think

  OF MICE AND MEN

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.

An excellent movie, currently on the set text list for GCSE. Obviously, it is the Steinbeck book that the kids are studying, but this film reflects the author's prose and craft, bringing the characters to life. Some fantastic acting with a sensitive portrayal from John Malkovich. An old movie at 17 years old, but well worth viewing.

I liked the story, the film was quite dark in a lot of the scenes. We bought the film because it was the subject of my daughter's English GCSE, 2009. She is more of a visual learner and this film has helped her to revise for her exams.

Excellent film. I think you need some tissues with this one as it's just soo sad. Actors were really excellent and it is pretty near to the book.
Great for GCSE revision - though be careful as the ending is just a little different to the book when revising for exams !

Of Mice and Men, DVD, John Malkovich and Gary Sinise
Review created: 07/09/08

I first read this book while at school, and I then watched the original movie many years later.

This is a remake with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich, and unlike many sequels, this one is better by far than the original.

Charting the friendship between two very different men, we are torn between our affection for the men, and the fact that they are not quite 'good'.

This film challenges our 'right and wrong' and I think that most people would find it very hard to envisage any other ending for this movie.

Thought provoking, this will reduce you to tears, rise you to anger, and leave you feeling as though you have gond 5 rounds with Tyson.

Don't miss it!

Again like most others, I brought this for my son who's doing it at GCSE.
He is a lazy boy who won't read the book again in depth, so thought at least he will watch the film. Anything on a screen and he's glued!
The whole family watched it, and enjoyed it as a film. So hopefully my son will at least retain the story. Whether it will help him in the exam, who knows? but it can't do him any harm.
Anyway I was pleased with the film, it was an enjoyable story.

This is an excellent version of the John Steinbeck book. My son is studying the book for his GCSE English and I felt it would help him to be able to "see" the whole book. It did and now the DVD is being passed around the class. It is true to the book with only the odd line missing where the screen can convey the same message without words.

Superb film and a real classic that hasn't actually been spoiled. The acting is so realistic and John Malkovich and Gary Sinise play the parts so incredibly well and all the actors really seem to enjoy and fit into the roles they play. Studied the book over 20 years ago and only wished we had of had the opportunity of watching this film as this really brings it to life and truly make you realize just how inspiring the story is.It bought back memories of reading a classic book and this time around it had so much more meaning and was appreciated a lot more. It fills you with so many mixed emotions.A film I Would definitely highly recommended.

Of Mice and Men - a classic of the future

I bought this film for £5 in my local Asda store because i had studied and read the book during my GCSEs when i was in high school. On watching the film i was not disapointed. The film is very moving and a few tears will definatly appear during certain parts of the film. It also provides a humble feeling in the viewer as well as providing an accurate representation and uderstanding of life in that era. overall it is a great film to watch with a bucket of popcorn adn a pack of tissues. definately a film to keep forever.

this is an absolutely fantastic film. I studied this for my English Literature GCSE and as a result of liking it so much and really taking the film in i acheived a 'B'. This wouldnt usually have been my kind of film but i was made to watch it for my GCSE exam. Im glad i was made to, if i hadnt have been, i wouldnt have been introduced to such a fantastic film. I think this has to be John Malcovich's best role and film. You are utterly convinced he actually has the problems Lennie does. I hadnt seen him in any films until i saw this and afterwards i watched Con air. WOW! I couldnt believe this was the same actor.
Couldnt rate this film any higher. A must see!!
