Stunning portrait of a woman with a mission
I was actually looking for the version with Joan portrayed by Leelee Sobieski, one of my favourite actresses, but when I saw that this version was available, I bought both and compared them. The two versions are both excellent, but tell the story in quite different ways, with different details and emphases. Miss Sobieski presents a rather cheerful, smiling figure, presumably filled with the joy of serving her Lord and her country, whereas Milla Jovovich portrays a much more earnest, forceful character, driven by an intense conviction born out of her deep piety. I felt this picture of Joan was a little more realistic, and therefore has the edge on the Sobieski version. It also has a very informative extra feature, showing how the film was made, with details of the documentary evidence for Jeanne d'Arc, and the research that went into getting the various details right. Nevertheless, they are both very good films, and well worth a viewing.
