Benchmark for Society

Menace II Society revolves around the lives of three principal characters - O-Dog (Larenz Tate), Caine (Tyrin Turner) and Ronnie (Jada Pinkett-Smith). The film shows that life in the hood is not easy, that people have to deal with issues such as drugs, sex, guns, racism, gangs and growing up. The violence of the hood is shown in a very real way. The beauty of Meance II Society is that it is not boring. Not at all. From start to finish, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The infamous "crack-head" scene set a trend for hood movies, and Menace II Society was parodied by the Wayans brothers in "Don't Be A Menace To Society Whilst Drinking Your Juice In The Hood" (which also parodied "Juice" and "Boyz 'N Da Hood").
Menace II Society set the benchmark though, because nothing else has been so raw. I watched the film with a few friends and was surprised at how good it was, how real it seemed and asked myself why I had not seen it sooner. Ask anyone and they will tell you, Menace II Society is a good film. That doesn't mean that it won an Oscar or had a blockbuster Hollywood cast. It means that it gives you everything you look for in a film. Drama, comedy and violence is what this film appears to be about, but it has hidden messages and tries to explain things in a particular way. So, to conclude, watch the film! Menace II Society is a must-have for your DVD collection!
