Memento is the compelling story of a man attempting to find and kill the murderer of his wife. His problem is that he has short-term memory loss. The story is well told through a jumble of non-sequential vignettes, which reflect the fragmented perspective of the protagonist (Leonard). Leonard attempts to overcome his problem by constructing a world of notes and tattoos in place of memory. Leonard pieces together the evidence with his notes and as the detective mystery unfolds a shocking outcome is revealed in perhaps the greatest cinematic twist of all time.
As well as maintaining a non-didactic plot, the film manages to ask the important philosophical questions, how can we know our actions have consequences? Does the world stop existing when its not being perceived?

This is not an easy watch; nevertheless it is a highly rewarding one. All the characters are flawlessly acted by a superb cast that includes; Guy Pearce, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss, who gives a much better performance in this then her awkward performance as Trinity in the Matrix trilogy. The directing is first rate, orchestrating the complex parts portrayed so well by the actors and the filming augments the feeling of disorientation throughout.

On plot and delivery alone, perhaps my all time favourite film.

Perhaps I've told you about my... condition
Review created: 14/10/05
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Leonard Shelby has a problem. He can't form new memories, so he lives his life in bursts of awareness lasting just a few minutes, before his mind is once again wiped clean. A debilitating enough condition, you'll agree, but a particular disadvantage if, like Leonard, you're trying to catch the man who brutally raped and murdered your wife and left you for dead.

Memento is one of the most original films of the last decade. The audience accompanies Leonard as he struggles to maintain the thread of his life as he closes in on the killer - or does he? With an ingenious combination of tattoos, post-it notes and polaroids, Leonard's investigation takes shape - but can he rely on anything he thinks he knows?

If you've only remember Guy Pearce in Neighbours (and let's face it, Mike & Jane were the thinking man's Kylie & Jason...), then this film, along with his turns in Priscilla and LA Confidential, will be a revelation. You'll get to the end of this film and watch it again - and still won't quite have figured it all out.

You will rewind this film at least once - guaranteed! At which point in the film depends entirely on how fast your own memory works. This is a mind-bender of a movie with more twists than a snakes & ladders board - the extra large deluxe edition!

  Excellent movie
Review created: 21/10/09

I watched the first 10 minutes of it somewhere and never got to see anymore, was definately worth buying to see the rest. This is a film you have to concentrate on to follow but is interesting if you like this kind of movie. Takes a few times to watch it to understand it fully.

Several friends told me this was a good one, but I kept falling asleep and only managed to watch 1 scene at a time!!

NOT GOOD.. you need to dedicate some time to this movie, and you'll definately be rewarded. Its one of the best films I've seen in ages and has Guy Pierce of 80s Neighbours (played Mike, friend of Scott and Charlene) in the lead role.

He's lost all ability to make new short term memories, so each morning he wakes up and is reminded is wife was violently murdered from notes on his bed and tattooed messages on his body. The way the story is told is the best thing about it.. backwards. The film starts at the end of the 'story' and as soon as you realise this, your gripped!

Confused? you will be, but not for too long as you soon get drawn into it, its a powerful and VERY well scripted movie, with so many twists you find yourself wishing you'd made notes yourself to keep up.

I'd recommend this to anyone.. its awesome!!

You MUST buy this film, this is a thinking mans pulp fiction.
Very confusing, and superbly directed this is one of those films that will not be watched once and discarded but you will want to re watch it many times, if not just to work it out. The other great thing is that if you still can't decode it, there is an easter egg that should put you in the 'picture'.
Buy it, buy it, buy it!

can't believe how much I'm still thinking the day after
Review created: 06/06/08

So the "innovative" concept of filming out of sequence has been cliche for at least a few years now, but here's a film that makes it work far better than its been shown in a while.

Having read the reviews and talked to others who saw it, I thought that I'd go into the movie figuring everything out right away and declaring the concept unworkable. I couldn't be further from the truth. This movie does things to your head that are illegal in some countries. Portrayed (for all intents and purposes) backwards, it forces you to think in the same way that our lead character, Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce being more brilliant than usual) does. Suffering from a condition that renders him unable to remember anything for more than a few minutes, he is searching for the man who raped and killed his wife. Since each seen lasts no more than 15 minutes before jumping back to the what happened before that, our perceptions are shattered in the same way.

Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano (both of The Matrix) put in great performances that leave you guessing; simultaneously endearing and revolting.

Overall I left the film trying to figure out what was what, and I'm still not sure. This film noir concept shouldn't work, but it does so wonderfully.

Why Memento should be in your collection of Films...
Review created: 02/08/07

Many films try to be innovative and different than all others, many obviously don't make the cut, Memento is one of these rare films which satisfies action, a cleverly intertwined plot, great acting and simple but effective directing. The story revolves around Leonard a man who can't create any new memories after 'the incident' and so his present revolves around notes he creates for himself on the back of polaroids. If you like Fight Club or The Machinist this film will definately suit you.

A fantastic psychological thriller!
This film takes a simple story and complicates it through the simple stages of lack of memory.
Twists and truns that keep yo frowing.
Just when you think you understand what is going on... Bam!. It hits you all over again.
No special effects just simple twists and turns.
I loved it!
