  A classic for the kids

This is a fast paced comedy starring Danny DeVito and his real life wife Rhea Pearlman. The story revolves around young Matilda whose self absorbed parents have no time for her. She soon learns quickly to fend for herself. Her eagerness to learn backfires when her Father sends her to a school headed by Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Fun and capers follow. Without giving away the ending, kids and parents alike will find this a very entertaining and funny film.

Definite one for the Family!!
Another Great Story from the famous Author Roald Dahl!
Matilda soon discovers she has magical powers to get everyone just where she wants them. Her Parents do not recognize her talents and discourage everything she does. Will Matilda get even with them all including the Evil School Principle???
An Hilarious Film full of Good Natured Humour.
101% Recommended!

  The Matilda DVD
Review created: 03/05/08

We bought Matilda on DVD format as we have had it on video since its realease. The children absolutely love this film as do I and we have watched it so many times the children know its script word for word.

It tells the story of Matilda who was born into an otherwise distracted family, the Father Harry Wormwood is a crooked car salesman and Mrs Wormwood does not maternally take to her child. However Matilda is a very clever child and craves knowledge like cats crave cream. Hence she educates herself at a very early age. This obviously allows her to view her situation somewhat differently.

It is a fantasy film giving children power over bad adults (Matilda's parents and the bad and frightening Miss Trunchball her school principle)so it appeals to children and adults alike. The film portrays the ability of a seemingly powerless child at the mercy of her uncaring, unforgiving parents and brother to reverse the parent child relation and take control of her own life which can only be done using her special powers. This gives the child Matilda a sense of control and power to change her situation of which she goes on to do and to actually pick her own parent:Miss Honey her teacher. Matilda in turn helps Miss Honey reclaim her life and her belongings.

This film has that feel good factor because its about how good triumphs over bad. It gives children a sense of empowerment and also relays a moral aspect which is easy for the child viewing it to grasp.

We have never got bored watching it as its pure escapism. My children whom are now teenagers and myself still view this DVD regularly.

The author is the famous Roald Dahl whom has penned many classics and whom most people are familiar with. He is known for writing to a captive young audience but I feel his work crosses every age boundary as they are family films to be watched together no matter what the age difference.

There is nothing any of us dislike about this film. This is a film that will remain on a top ten film list. A great Must See family movie. Buy or rent it today , You won't be disappointed.

As adaptations of Roald Dahl book's go this has got to be the best. With a good plot and fantastic turns from Mr DeVito as the despicable father and Pam Ferris as the sublimely nasty school governess stroke shotput champion Miss Trunchball(?) this is essentially the story of how one sweet and intelligent unassuming little girl gets her own back on all the terrible characters that surround her.

Total family fare; no swearing, no nudity, not too dark, not too complicated. Just a very good funny film.

This is a classic childrens film, that entertains my two boys each and every time they watch it.
Although many beleive its a girls film they couldn't be further from the truth, my boys are aged 6 & 4 and along with Spiderman, Dr Who etc this remains a favourite.

Danny Devito is a great actor. He never seems to take himself too seriously, what ever he does. Personally, I prefered him in Twins, but in many ways, this was just as good.

It tells the story of a girl, who loves to read, but whose boorish family dont appreciate her.
She goes to School, where the Headmistress is an evil militarian.

A film that my kids like, but we only had on VHS recorded from the TV, and managed to record over part of that!

The story is that of a girl, Matilda, who lives with parents and older brother who treat her like dirt or just ignore her. (Her parents still think she is 4, when she should be in school, aged 6 and a half). She discovers books, goes to school (with a fearsome Principal, played by Pam Ferris) and becomes friends with her class teacher. Matilda discovers special powers that she uses to right some wrongs, and I won't tell you anything about the ending!

  Mathilda DVD - Roald Dahl
Review created: 09/02/07

We'd recorded this from TV a couple of years ago, and my oldest son, now aged 6, went through phases when he'd watch it continuously. He asked to watch it just before Christmas 2006, and we realised that it had been recorded over.
I immediately went on Ebay and was lucky enough to find a DVD copy whose time was almost up.
I put in my bid and was fortunate to win. The dvd keeps the boys quiet for an hour or 2 on many a rainy day.I love the film too. It has everything - comedy, scary bits and a real feelgood factor!!
