It's amazing to me how many positive reviews I've seen for this movie on here. I say this because I wonder if I saw the same movie or not. The fact this movie happens to have the same title as the legendary cartoon I think is just a coincidence. Mainly because if you watched the cartoon incessantly growing up, you saw very little in common the movie had with it. The movie was too futuristic for what "Masters of the Universe" was actually about from the comic book to the cartoon. They put very few characters from the actual cartoon in this movie. Excluding The Sorceress they had three heroes (He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Teela) and three villans (Skeletor, Beast Man and Evil-Lyn). In that regard it's easy to say and see that this movie was made far before its time for what little they could do with it at the time.
The weaponry used in the movie is not complimentary to the cartoon at all. They gave everyone blasters and such. The best way to describe what worlds meet in this movie is imagining Battlestar Galactica meeting The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2). Skeletor has an army of Cylon wannabe's from Battlestar Galactica in the movie that he never had in the comic nor cartoon. It was really bizarre for me to see this movie in 1987 as a kid knowing what I grew up reading in the comics and watching in the cartoon. Putting most of the movie on Earth instead of Eternia was a bad idea. Giving He-Man a cape was a bad idea. It was logical to make the movie at this time to show how larger than life He-Man had become in all ways to children, but the movie was just not very excellent. If you've never seen the cartoon or read the comic books, thus have nothing to compare the movie to, you might find the movie lukewarm at best. But when watching it, it personifies a low budget film every step of the way in how it looks. It wouldn't surprise me to know upon making this movie if they never read a comic nor viewed any cartoon episodes to get an idea of what to do and where to go with the movie. It's like they read a general summary of the show and decided to do their own thing with it. Bottom line is, don't expect an artistic success when watching this movie. There is a lot more I can say about this movie that's negative, but I've covered mostly the important stuff necessary to mention.
P.S. Frank Langella as Skeletor steals the show! He has some of the best lines in movie villain history in this movie.
