good - but doesnt anyone remember live lounge

so yes the album is good,
its unique in a sence and has some great summer hits, but to me it does just sound like a recorded version of live lounge, (get famous people to sing others songs), which i prefere to be honest. This album i find is becoming over played, and if you dont think youve heard anything off it, you might be surpised....

Mark Ronson's Version is indeed eagerly anticipated and what's clear is that for the most part that anticipation is not only lived up to, but surpassed.

It's difficult to know where to start when recommending the best tracks. You should have already heard the Smiths cover (Stop Me) which is just genius, the version of Britney's Toxic, which is even more playful and funky than the original and the cover of Radiohead's Just which in some ways shows that if Thom Yorke put his mind to it his version of "experimental" wouldn't have to be so dull.

There's plenty more to enjoy as well. Ronson brings out the best vocal performance we've had yet from Lily Allen on the cover of the Kaiser Cheifs Oh My God, whilst Ronson also proves that he had more than a little to do with Amy Winehouse's renaissance on Back To Black with a great Mowtown-esque version of the Zuton's Valerie. It also works well with the original vocalists as well as Maximo Park's Paul Smith contributes to a snazzy version of Apply Some Pressure.

In fact the only one that doesn't really work at all is Kasabian joining Ronson on a version of L.S.F. But that just goes to prove that whilst Ronson might be a musical genius, not even he is quite up to the task of making Kasabian something worth listening to.

It might seem a little bizarre to be trumpeting an album of cover versions as one of the best of the year so far, but believe me that's not over-stating matters in the slightest. This is a must-have album every step of the way.

  Better Versions

This is not a remix album all tracks are, as the title suggests, new versions and in the main better ones. I personally love the brass sections, they take you back to a time before the over produced rubbish around the charts today.
Slightly jazz club, a little bit Ska and a lot of very cool tracks.
This has to be a contender for the album of the year.
Great stuff.

I bought this album having heard some snippets of tracks from it on Radio One with Chris Moyles. Already liking Mark Ronson's Stop Me, it was a pretty easy choice to see just what he could do with a whole album. Luckily I wasn't disappointed! From Coldplay to Britney, each and every re-cutting of these classic songs hits the mark dead on. There are very few albums which I can happily listen to all the way through time and again but this is definitely one of them. If you know and like your music, have an appreciation for great craftsmanship and have an hour and a bit to devote to yourself... buy this record!

MARK RONSON'S 'VERSION' - BUY THIS CD!!!!

This is a fantastic album: varied, contenporary and possibly has something for everyone! The artists featured on the album are interesting - from Lily Allen to Robbie Williams - plus others that i personally hadn't heard of but who, nonetheless, do a brilliant job. If you don't like people messing around with original versions of songs, then this won't be for you, but if you like a bit of a change, i would highly recommend it. It actually made me like Britney Spears' 'Toxic' (sung by a man on the album - and a great version it is too!) One word of caution i would offer, however, is that 'Toxic' does contain an incredibly racist word that is repeated quite a few times. Other than that little spoiler, enjoy!!!

This is one of the best albums I have heard in a very VERY long time. I'm not usually a fan of covers but Ronson knows how to take an ok song and make it amazing, there are songs on this album that I just wouldn't listen to the original versions of but Ronson is a genius! I look forward to his next album.

Talented guy. Really good work, I beleive he could have more to come.

Seems to know how to get the best out of stars by giving then great songs.

Would have liked it to be a bit more relaxed, but on the whole is really good.

Forgive the man his envolvement in the Robbie Williams godawful 'Rudebox' fiasco and go out and buy his album. Version is essentially a collection of interpretations (not cover versions - all of Ronson's takes on others songs here are total reworkings in terms of style) but it is a very good listen. The Smiths cover/Supremes medley is a corker, the Kaiser Cheifs go all London chav via Lily Allen, Britney Spears Toxic gets down and dirrrty and Amy Winehouse temporarily signs up with the Zutons and drags them down a soul café. The album is worthy for those four songs alone but when you also chuck in a decent reworking of L.S.F with Kasabian and a tolerable cover of The Charlatans massive 'Only One I Know' with vocals by Mr Williams (although the almost painfully weak unnecesary woo hoo's halfway through the track do actually push it to the limits of acceptance) then you are getting a pretty decent collection of veritable great tracks to listen to. Not ska. Definately not ska. But with an emphasis on drumbeats and phat horns nonetheless (and cool vocals) 'Version' makes for a very worthy listen.

Versions has a range of tracks that will appeal to a wide audience. Although, in my opinion, not every track works as well as others. There are some really nice tracks and the album shows some artists in a different light, which is always refreshing.

If you like pop with an alternative tint, then this is for you!

This album is brilliant, however if your expecting all the songs to be like the single 'stop me' you may be disappointed. the album is covers or 'version's' of well known hit singles by other well known artists. For example Lily Alan does a brilliant cover of the kaiser chiefs 'oh my god'. each of the singles bear little or no resemblance of the original track and are sung with a quirky and catchy rythmn. I'm not a big fan of Robbie Williams but the cover which he does on this album I have to admit is really quite good.

Mark Ronson Producer god age 20

I decided to buy Mark Ronsons version album as i loved his version of Stop Me, featuring Daniel Merriweather, even Morrisey approved Mark using the Smith's classic.
I also am a big fan of Amy winehouse and her version of Valerie by the Kooks is sublime.
If you are easily offended you might want to avoid toxic, and if you have small children i wouldn't play it when they are about.
This is a superb album and makes many a journey with me in the car, as Mark is only 20 his talent as a producer will make grown men cry.

I actually bought this item for my husband as he wanted the song Valerie by Amy Winehouse which is on this album as he had mislaid his single CD.I like the song but I only bought it as a surprise for him.No dislikes - it isn't my kind of music so I won't be the one listening to it.

  Mark Ronson = genius
Review created: 20/03/09

Brillant remakes of popular songs done by the one and only Mark Ronson. Musical Genius 10/10. I bought it because I had heard several of his Songs on youtube and radio and decided to get the whole package. Listen especially to his remake of Britny's Toxic. Very good.

I bought the CD as I liked what Mark Ronson had put out in the charts. The album didn't dissappoint but the excessive use of trumpets and horns put me off a bit. A good background party CD but a bit tedious to listen to all the time.

  A splendid version!
Review created: 09/05/08
by:

Version is a swirling, brass-pumped melting pot of winning incongruity. Orchestrated by British deejay/producer Mark Ronson (the man behind most of the Spector-soaked pastiche cool of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black), it's a collection of (mostly) U.K. alt-rock covers, with each track broken down to the molecular level and reconstructed by Ronson as sweaty, late-'60s horn-laden soul vamps featuring vocal cameos by several (mostly) U.K. rock and pop stars. The Smiths, Radiohead, the Charlatans, the Jam -- they all get refracted through Ronson's prism of Northern Soul and programmed beats. Such aural vandalizing sounds as if it shouldn't work, but it does. Mostly.

Led by Amy Winehouse, the brass-and-bass fueled "Valerie" transforms the Zutons' crunchy roots-alt-pop into a propellant girl-group groove; Ronson and Daniel Merriweather shape-shift the Smiths' "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before" from detached Moz irony to sensuous, slowburned and drum-looped modern soul.

The album's standout for me is Phantom Planet's "Just," which roughs up the Radiohead classic into a menacing slice of punching horns, ominous vocals, and swinging choruses, all street grit and Stax funk.

Track list

1 God Put a Smile Upon Your Face - The Daptone Horns, Mark Ronson
2 Oh My God - Lily Allen, Mark Ronson
3 Stop Me Medley: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before/You K - Daniel Merriweather, Mark
4 Toxic [Version Revisited] - Mark Ronson, Tiggers
5 Valerie [Version Revisited] - Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse
6 Apply Some Pressure [Version Revisited] - Mark Ronson, Paul Smith
7 Inversion - Mark Ronson
8 Pretty Green - Santo Gold, Mark Ronson
9 Just - Phantom Planet, Mark Ronson
10 Amy - Kenna, Mark Ronson
11 Only One I Know - Mark Ronson, Robbie Williams
12 Diversion - Mark Ronson
13 L.S.F. [Version Revisited] - Kasabian, Mark Ronson
14 Outversion - Mark Ronson
