Here comes former American Music Club frontman Mark Eitzel with ten more ways to make you sad. Over the years, Eitzel has been known to whip out the occasional cover tune, from Goffin/King's "No Easy Way Down" to a B-side of the showtune "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever," but this is the first time the prolific songwriter has gone for a whole album of other people's songs. Unsurprisingly, the songs chosen are mostly not a peppy lot. Eitzel sounds at home with the mournfulness of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," and even manages to find the core of sadness in Anne Murray's '70s smash "Snowbird" (one of the album's most impressive interpretations). Given Eitzel's way with a ballad, it's surprising he doesn't make more of "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "I'll be Seeing Them," which sound like AMC outtakes. But it's unexpected turns like the warm "Gentle on My Mind" and the murked-up trip-hop take on the disco classic "More, More, More" that get at the true, twisted gift that this singer of sorrows possesses.
