Album Notes Personnel: Marcus Printup (trumpet); Kevin Bales (piano); Ricky Ravelo (bass); Woody Williams (drums).Recorded at Avatar Studio C, New York, New York on January 24 & 25, 1998. Includes liner notes by Dr. Herb Wong. When trumpeter Marcus Printup takes his horn in hand and begins to play, his many influences--from Miles to Dizzy to Freddie--are only a part of his musical approach. As illustrated on this, his fourth disc for Blue Note, Printup is his own man. He is a confident leader, and his sidemen--former college mate Kevin Bales (piano), Ricky Ravelo (bass) and the fiery Woody Williams (drums)--play with the spirit and energy that comes from a true faith in their employer's abilities. Printup plays with the maturity and assuredness of someone twice his age while remaining committed to defining his own fresh musical style. From the opening drum feature "Woody's Beat" to the closing barn burner "Freddie's Inferno," Printup showcases his quartet's unique ability for extra-sensory communication. The standards "Have You Met Miss Jones" and "Body and Soul" are excellent examples of this fine group's proficiency for marking any material with their own personal stamp. Printup's own talents are in superior form, as displayed on the bluesy "Black Coffee," his own "Pier Pressure," and the Fats Waller classic "Ain't Misbehavin'."
