A Fantastic Film Well Worth Watching
Review created: 13/12/05

This is a fantastic film which can definately hold its own against films like Shrek, Finding Nemo etc.

The penguins definately steal the film with their escape plans ~ if you like the penguins watch out for their Christmas Caper, a short cartoon film with just them in ~ fantastic!!!

This film is perfect for you to just sit & have a good laugh with the kids, or even on your own :0)

You will laugh hard at this great animated movie!

WOW!!!! Dreamworks, out of all of the movies made, this one gets the best review from me, Shrek wasnt even as funny as this, I can't remember laughing at Shrek or Ants as much as I did at this, Melman(the giraffe), is the most cynical yet funniest character in it, his silliness adds to the humour of by which I laughed at most, Marty(the zebra) also contributes highly to the laughs and so do of course the other two animals, the hippo and the lion. Great storyline, a good adventurous movie, gets less humourous to the end, but still a great movie, the penguins are also a bunch of highly equipped criminals, who are funny by far. Im 16 years of age, and I found this to be the best movie dreamworks have produced yet. Im not sure however, if the younger generation of children, say 3-7 year olds would find it funny, but I definetly thought it was a cracker when it came to laughter.

GOOD ALLROUND FILM FOR ALL AGES

BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING ELSE, I HAVE NOTICED THIS FILM HAS RECIEVED BAD REVIEWS AS IT IS SHORT (AROUND 90 MINS), BUT PLEASE REMEMBER, IT IS FOR KIDS, AND LONG FILMS BORE ADULTS, NEVER MIND KIDS.
THIS IS YET ANOTHER HILARIOUS FILM, ANIMATED FOR KIDS, BUT WITH THE DIALOGUE AND HUMOUR DIRECTED AT ADULTS.
WITH THE VOICES OF BEN STILLER (ALEX THE LION), CHRIS ROCK (MARTY THE ZEBRA), DAVID SCHWIMMER (MELMAN THE GIRAFFE), AND JADA PINKETT-SMITH (GLORIA THE HIPPO)
THE FOUR MAIN CHARACTERS HAVE LIVED ALL THEIR LIFE IN A ZOO. WHEN MARTY CELEBRATES HIS 10TH BIRTHDAY, HE STARTS TO WONDER WHAT LIFE IS LIKE OUTSIDE THE ZOO WALLS. HE FALLS IN WITH SOME COMPLETELY CRAZY PENGUINS, WHO PERSUADE HIM TO ESCAPE.
WHEN ALEX REALISES HIS FRIEND IS MISSING, HE, ALONG WITH MELMAN AND GLORIA SET OFF TO BRING HIM HOME. BUT, THEY ALL END UP GETTING CAPTURED, CRATED, AND SHIPPED TO AFRICA.
THEY END UP IN MADAGASCAR, WHICH IS HOME TO THOUSANDS OF CRAZY, DANCING, SINGING LEMARS (BY FAR THGE BEST AND FUNNIEST CHARACTERS) AND GET THEMSELVES INTO ALL KINDS OF SCRAPES!
ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS, EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE KIDS, GET THIS ONE, YOU'LL LOVE IT!

  Good enough entertainment

Having missed the opportunity to watch this film on the big screen, I was quite looking forward to watching the dvd when it came out. Overall I think it is a good enough film that will appeal to kids. Watch out for the hilarious penguins who in my mind are the funniest thing in the film. Sometimes it feels like these type of films are made for the sake of it and this felt like this sometimes, with its saccharine dialogue and predictable plot.It is good entertainment but not to the standards (plot wise)of other films such as Shrek. The extras are ok and all in all watch it if you can, even if it is only for the penguins!!!!!

The idea is good, the script is boring. If it wasn't for the actors of the main characters, and those penguins!!! this film wouldn't be worth writing about. My 3yr old loves it, which I suppose is all that matters, but it's not a threat for Shrek, Nemo, Monsters Inc etc etc. A couple of good laughs with the penguins and monkeys, thats about it. Rent it don't buy it.

Kids and adults alike will love this film. Never a dull moment plenty of high octane action and emotion following the story of our furry friends. Watch it just for the comic genius of the penguins!

I loved this film, it was a bit different to other kids films which was why it was so good. You can't help but laugh! The lion getting back to his natural instints when it comes to hunting and his friends trying to help him remember who he is was really sweet.

Basically madagascar is about some zoo animals that get transported to madagascar, an island, for being bad, there some things happen like they meet some gay hamsters and the lion decides it wants to eat its frined the zebra. this film really doesnt have much of a plot and even worse it only lasts 1 1/2hours.
i was so dissapointed by this film. yes, it has funny moments but that only slightly makes up for the lack of a plot and hence the shortness of the movie.
if you're hoping for another shrek type movie, your not going to get it here. there is a strong feel of little effort being made in this movie, even the visual effects aren't up to what they could and should be.
i would only suggest this movie to very young children who will be none the wiser at its terrible plot.

It seems this film has received soem bad reviews because people expected it to be like Shrek (ummm, no, not even remotely the same) and because it is short (I didn't really notice). The film is wonderful. Long films are just boring. This film cuts out all the paddingand leaves us wotht he best bits. Pure brilliance. I found the film hugely entertaining, fun, funny, interesting and exciting. Side-splitting moments, perfect line up of stars providing voice-overs and wonderful animation. A must for any kid and big kid!

  Someone's got a zoo loose.
Review created: 02/04/06(updated 02/04/06)
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This, from the studio that brought us Shrek and Shark Tale is a new animated adventure directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath. After release,Madagascar quickly became one of the hottest films to see for the early part of the 2005 summer.

The film tells the story of four Central Park Zoo animals who have spent their lives in blissful captivity and are unexpectedly shipped back to Africa, becoming shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar in the process.

Alex the exuberant lion,Marty the zebra,Melman the hypochondriac giraffe and Gloria the hippo have a pampered life at the Zoo in New York City where they can show off to the crowds.Yet Marty, celebrating his tenth birthday,is becoming restless and dreaming of life in the wild. When he learns that the penguins are planning to escape he decides to follow suit.

If you thought that this was going to be another groundbreaking title that DreamWorks could add to their repertoire you'd be very wrong.Whilst it is not entirely a waste of time (hence 3/5) you definitely get the feeling that time could have been better spent and indeed upon watching the film you can't help but feel that the production was rushed.

The storyline is rather flat and it seems to lack the spirit of the likes of Shrek. The choice of cast for this film can also be questioned.Ben Stiller voicing the lion Alex and Jada Pinkett Smith voicing the hippo Gloria seem to be ok,but David Schwimmer (Ross in Friends) is a real mis-match when voicing the giraffe.
His voice doesnt suit the look of the character Melman and he becomes too annoying at times.

While this film is technically a "family" film, there are elements which in fact appeal more to adults.Much of it is built on the pop culture references, the majority of which only the adult viewers will get (this includes the inclusion of certain music).Additionally, while it doesn't contain "swearing" in the general sense, words such as "darn" and "heck" are intentionally used in a way that make it sound like they are actually swearing.

Do not let this put you off watching this film.Children love it and will be captivated by it.There is a good moral in the story that children will pick up on and will benefit from.
The animation, whilst bringing us nothing new,is still amazing to behold.
From the crowds at the zoo,to the lush dense forest of the jungle and even a beautiful tropical beach, this movie really is colourful and delightful to watch.
The quirky penguins who feel that they are true spies, out on a secret mission for a secret government agency bring a James Bond style feel to the screen whenever they appear. They are one of the highlights of the film along with the Lemurs, the King of which is voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G) who is hillarious.

So would you be crazy to miss this? No.You would however be foolish to overlook it,as although it does not come close to the splendour of Shrek it will still provide entertainment for adults and children,at least for a while.

This film is brilliant, with great characters that you get to like instantly, the voices of chris rock and david schwimmer suit the characters brilliantly and mort the lemur is 'the cutest little thing'. The special edition dvd is even better as you get the little penguin movie as a bonus, so if you are thinking of buying it, which you should, i would recommend the special edition set even if it is a bit more expensive.

This is a great film and the animation is predictably spectacular, the pace (once you get through the first sluggish 10 minutes) is brisk enough to maintain adult interest, and kids will love it.

A must have to add to your dvd collection!
