Album Notes Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ("Rich Girl," featuring rapper Eve). Sensual R&B rhythms, frenetic hip-hop beats, and yes, the occasional pop/rock echo of No Doubt, all share space on LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, filtered through a fun-loving, party-starting sensibility. Horrible album, couldn't turn it off quickly enough. An infinitely pointless trawl of annoying pop trash exposing the singing voice of a 12 year old munching through jaffa cakes whilst spluttering hideous lyrics spelling 'bananas' to fill space for example. Needless swearing to try and gain the 'cool' factor too. I have no problem with bad language, but in this context, it is childish. Review ID: 10000000000084223 Was this review helpful? Its different from what I am used to hearing from Gwen Stefani and the tracks are not all in the same 'category'. Its quite an eclectic mix which you could look at as having something for everyone (bit of rap, bit of pop). Overall, I really like it. You'll recognize the tracks that have recently been given alot of air-time such as Hollaback Girl, or Cool. The others that havent had as much coverage yet are descent and could definitely grow on you. Review ID: 10000000000026556 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 08/06/08 by: There's only one word for this album: OUTSTANDING This CD is one of the best in my collection. Gwen Stefani is an amazing vocalist, reaching heights that many other singers only dream of. Some think it was a mistake that she broke off from No Doubt, but she has definitely excelled herself here. Every song on this album is beautifully written and easy to sing-along to. What You Waiting For? was the first release, followed by Rich Girl, Hollaback Girl, Cool and Luxurious. If you think those songs are brilliant, this album is going to amaze you. Stefani has co-written many of the songs, along with the likes of No Doubt member Tony Kanal, and Andre 3000. Her love for Japanese culture comes through strongly in Harajuku Girls, but her softer, more feminine side is shown through ballads such as The Real Thing. Every song has such deep meaning. If you loved No Doubt, you will definitely love this too. I reccommend it to everyone. Gwen Stefani is an absolute star! Review ID: 10000000007483435 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
