Much better than the more recent films!!!

I first saw this film at the flicks back in 1978.So much better than the recent films and not so long!!.Just a pity that the makers never had enough money to make the rest of the trilogy.

An inovative mix of turning live film into annimation. It also contains some good humour too and somewaht less dark then the films.

Before Elijah was even born I'm sure!!!
Review created: 21/10/09

I bought this DVD for my 6 year old! He loves wizards and fighting and stories like The Dark Crystal so I knew he'd love this - and he did - violent enough for him with out the blood shed and long confusing story line of the Elijah Films! I remember watching this film as a child too and rewatching it on a saturday night brought back loads of childhood memories!! It is great and features the first two books of the trilogy - it's dark but not too dark and really is better than the remakes although the characters are not quite as nice to look at!

  Lord of the Rings

This was ground breaking animation at it's time. With all the CGI it is now a bit dated, but still a good film with plenty of atmosphere. A bit long but then so is the books, but worth watching. Would happily recomend it to anyone who likes these sort of fantasy films

  Good first attempt.
Review created: 13/10/08

This is a good first attempt at making the books into a film. A good combination of animation with some live action incorporated in small amounts, but not visible as real people some of the time.

Lord Of The Rings - Animated

I'm an avid LOTR fan, but this was a real let down! I was well prepared for this to be extremely dated, and perhaps less imaginative, but I found it so painful to watch that I've had to sit through it in installments. Very poor animation and poor dialogue, mixed with psychedelic 70's backdrops. Very weird, very disappointing, but nice to have on the shelf!

  The Lord of the Rings

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.

I remember seeing this many years ago and had been trying for sometime to get it in the shops so i was delighted to find it on Ebay. It's a great way for younger children to understand and follow what was a magical story.
It truly is a must for everyone

Bakshi creates Gandalf as we know him !
Review created: 04/04/07(updated 06/11/07)

The great thing about Ralph Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings" is the amount of different media used; it seems that this film could have been as ground breaking as the recent Peter Jackson films. I think also that Sir Ian Mckellen may have taken great inspiration from Bakshi's Gandalf. John Hurt as Strider is awesome !!

Lord of the Rings - cartoon version
Review created: 03/06/06

i bought this DVD because my children found the other Lord of the Rings films a bit hard to follow, too long, and they lose interest fairly quickly.
i saw this cartoon version myself many years ago (before i had kids), and found it easier to follow than the books, which again are too long and complicated for young children.

my son is 9, he has seen the main films, but was forever asking questions so i remembered the cartoon one and purchased it specially for my children.
he now has a better understanding of the story and this has led him to have a greater understanding of the main films.

My 2 year old daughter (who obviously is too young to understand either cartoon or film) is already enjoying this cartoon, and hopefully as she gets older she will progress to the books and main films.

I would recommend this cartoon version as a starter for children before they progress to the main books and films. Even as young as 2, my daughter really enjoys it and sits nice and quiet to watch it - for this reason alone it is good - it gives me a bit of "mum-time"!
