Personally I didn't like it as much as the original black & white version. It fails on two levels, as a remake it brings nothing new to the party and secondly the use of bad language spoilt it as it was out of place in this period piece. After this the acting and characterisation were pretty good and quite faithful to the original. If you pay more than few pounds for this, it’s too much. Pity those saps that paid to watch this on the big screen.

Lord of the Flies DVD
) I bought the DVD for my daughter who is studying Lord of the Flies for her GCSE's. The film quality and sound was good, however half way through watching the film sub titles appeared on the screen. They did disappear after a few minutes, I have no idea why they came up. The remanding part of the film was fine.

My son saw this film at school and enjoyed it so much that he said he had to have the DVD. I enjoyed the film as much as him. Some parts are shocking to watch and rather tragic. The film lasts about 1 1/2 hours so doesn't drag on. It gets straight to the point. A great remake of a classic film and book.

) Having read the book and seen the original black and white version I can only describe this as what it is Americanized. All the characters are American?? the original are all English. My 7y old son watched the original with interest, he turned this off 3 quarters of the way through as it was a little frightening for him. Worth watching I suppose if only for comparing against the original.

Lord of the Flies - DVDNot as good as the book - but I got it for my son - who had just finished the book. He likes it - and is now keen to compare with the 1950s version - which I am looking for.
If you are seeking a faithful to the book film, this isn't it - but it is watchable.
Ebay is a great way to pick up DVDs inexpensively.

Being of an age where we did this for English O Level, and watched the original black and white version, I'm biased towards the original. The 2003 version isn't quite true to the book, and all the kids have an American accent (in the original, they're all English). The suspense isn't there for me and they've changed & added bits to it which presumably were added to keep the viewers interest. It didn't quite work for me, but if you've not seen or read the story before, its probably ok.
