The longest Yard - One of 3 versions

Adam Sandler carries off the lead role, in this re-make of Burt Reynolds' earlier offering, probably as well as any of his contemporaries could.
Helped by Chris Rock, and the aforementioned Burt, Sandler plays the troubled ex-pro who is used and abused by the head of the prison.
The plot is simple........prove that the amateur prison team (made up of the guards.) can beat a team coached by a professional, and which backfires.
This is a well produced and acted film, full of recognisable faces and more than sufficiently up-beat enough to prevent the audience fron yawning.
I would almost say it was an excellent film if it wasn't for Vinny Jones (in 'Mean Machine' - the alternative title for Reynolds' original.)and the ever impressive Jason Stratham - much more believable in the role of the prison psycho - in the British version.
Anyone who sees "The Longest Yard" will believe what they are seeing in the action shots for the greater percentage of the film..... until we are led to believe that Mr Reynolds is still capable of donning a football (not soccer.) shirt, and helmet, and sprinting more than 100 yards.
While Vinny, Jason and Danny (Dyer - who couldn't possibly be that bad at footie.)are all 100% convincing, our American friends rely on familiar screen faces and humour to divert attention from the fact that the guys on the field in the football action shots are really sportsmen, hiding beneath convenient body armour and helmets.
If the British version had been based on the sport of Rugby it would have wiped the floor with our cousins from across the pond........ but it wasn't and instead we only gave them a nose bleed.
Anyway, this review is about "The Longest Yard" and, as I have said, it is a good film - otherwise I would not have added it to our DVD collection.
