Album Notes H.P. Lovecraft: Tony Cavallari, Dave Michaels, Jerry McGeorge, Michael Tegza, George Edwards.Includes liner notes by Jeff Jarema.Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin.Utilising an eclectic mix of folk, rock, and psychedelia, Chicago's H.P. Lovecraft came together in early 1967 under the creative guidance of George Edwards (vocals) and David Michaels (vocals/keyboards). One undistinguished single and a critically acclaimed debut album later, the band gravitated towards the "happening" San Francisco scene in the spring of 1968 and found fame (if not fortune) supporting the Bay Area rock luminaries of the day at Winterland and the Fillmore West. These live Fillmore tracks, however, prove that Lovecraft were more than just a bunch of hippie also-rans.Drawn mainly from that debut album, the material featured here includes both group compositions and works by revered singer-songwriters Fred Neil and Randy Newman. "I've Been Wrong Before" is a concise reading of a truly superior Newman song. "The White Ship," an eerie adaptation of a short story by H.P. Lovecraft (the author), and the extended traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" give the band a chance to stretch out a little. The solid dual lead vocals are outstanding throughout. A fascinating live document not released at the time, the album serves to cement H.P. Lovecraft's position at the top of the Frisco second division. Editorial Reviews Mojo (09/01/2000) | |||||||||
