After watching the series on TV there was no way anyone could stop me from buying the DVD! The brilliant performances by Matt Lucas and David Walliams bring a new meaning to British life. This has got to be the best sketch show for many years and will be for many years to come.

Want that One!, 17 Jan 2007
Reviewer: RDWHITE - See all my reviews
Excellant. Little Britain isn't to everyone's tastes, but this DVD is full of special features plus all 8 episodes from season one, so it is a good deal. This was easily the best series of Little Britain, containing not only all the on-going characters (Lou and his wheelchair bound friend Andy, out gay Welshman Daffyd, teenage chav Vicky Pollard, and the prime minister and his aid, Sebastian), but also many well loved characters who were later dropped - Mad Scottish hotel owner Roy McCooney, stage hypnotist Kenny Craig and singing midget Dennis Waterman. It also was without much of the grotesque and obscene jokes found in later series. This is British sketch show comedy at it's best, akin to the works of Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G, Bruno, Borat), and whether certain people like it or not, thousands find this hilarious, and it hit Britain by storm. This is where it all started...

  British Comedy is at the top of its game !!!

For a while there was a buzz about the partnership of Matt Lucas and David Walliams when they had a show together- Rock Profile on PlayUK. Together with Jamie Theakston they took on different pop stars, such as Gary Barlow and Elton John and so it was no surprise when the two were commissioned by the BBC to write their own show. What they have come up with is simply brilliant- dark but hilairious comedy that takes a surreal look at the life of Britain and those that inhabit it. At first it was aired on BBC3 but made a successful leap onto BBC2 and has since grown in reputation, and become one of the most talked about british comedies since The Office.
Matt Lucas and David Walliams play perfectly off each other and act as foils to each other's own style of comedy and impersonation. Each have a wide range of unusual characters but a few stand out more than others, most notably the double act of supposed wheelchair bound Andy and his good-hearted but gulliable friend, Lou. These two are so brilliant in their execution they could have a spin-off series all by themselves. Other highlights include the infamous Vicky Pollard which Matt Lucas gets down to a tee, and the unconvincing transvestite Emily Howard. The first series is outstanding, simple but brilliant, it's a touch of genius with each episode easily watched repeatedly over and over again. By the last episode each character gets some kind of comeuppance but that doesn't mean they won't all be back for a highly anticipated second series.

Instantly quotable this series is a classic- and a must-buy DVD. Everything from the opening credits to the closing 'world record attempt' has you laughing and it's all topped off by Tom Baker's
booming voice describing the bizzare goings on with customary hilarity.

Meet the characters that inhabit Little Britain, in the first series of the comedy sketch show. Characters such as Dafydd, the only gay man in his village, Fatfighters group leader Majorie Dawes, teenage girl Vicky Pollard, and rubbish transvestite Emily Howard. Along with these characters there is the carer Lou and his wheelchair bound pal, Andy, aging actor Sir Bernard Chumley, disgraced kids star Des Kaye and many more. Originally created for Radio Four, this television series is primarily written by it's two stars, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. With a surreal narration provided by former Doctor Who, Tom Baker and regular guest appearances by Buffy star Anthony Stewart Head as the Prime Minister, the show presents a wide range of comedy characters in sketches shot both on location and in the studio.

I think this comedy sketch is great. Its the best we've had in my opinion.
Matt Lucas and David Walliams are great comedians and it really shows.
The first series is something you can watch over and over again. And altough it has improved a lot since then, its nice to watch it to see how far it has come.
I bought it because I found it hilarious. I watched it once as it was new just to see what it was like and then I watched every episode afterwards!!

From Lucas and Walliams dressing as Ladies to Little David Watermans feem toons... you'll laugh no matter what and its even great for granny!

Having only seen a few previews of this series, I rented Series 1 from Amazon to see what the fuss was about - and was pleasantly surprised. Some really good sketches (a few a bit hit and miss), many Monty Python-like, and how very refreshing to be able to watch comedy that is not exactly politically correct and certainly pushes a few boundaries. If you liked the style of League Of Gentleman, you'll enjoy this.

Little Britain is the most funniest program you are likely to watch this century. Matt Lucas and David walliams star in this award winning series The new series little Britain 3 is about to hit our screen in the next couple of weeks.

===============================
So how did little Britain come about?
===============================

Well i had to do a bit of research for this as i only know that they did start out on radio 4 but can't comment on that as i have never heard them on radio4 it's not my cup off tea radio 4. They did in fact start out on radio 4 and did 2 series not actually sure about the series as can't find anything but when i do i will surly add it to this review. Little Britain did get noticed by Graham linehan who made little Britain in to a TV show and might i add that what a clever idea that was not only has it been worldwide success now i have lost count the number of gongs and awards little Britain has won. Matt Lucas and David walliams have also done rock profile together and Matt has done pope town and of course little Britain series 2 which is also available ow to buy on DVD got that one as well and it's just as funny as the first series. David has done rock profile and pennies from heaven. Little Britain got released on the 11th of October 2004 and a year on it's still going strong. Little Britain first hit our screen on 2003 not sure of the month as i did not watch little Britain from the start. Now I'm glued to the telly every time it's on. You can never get board of little Britain in my opinion i watch it over and over again. Can't wait for the new series to hit our screen soon.

Characters
================

Vicky Pollard done by Matt Lucas. Vicky is a juvenile delinquent always getting into trouble and never talks any sense or never talks slowly. Famous saying yeah but no but yeah but no and then starts on about something completely different and makes no sense what so ever it tuck me a while to get used to this character but once you do get just to her then Vicky is very funny.

Sebastian Love done by David walliams. Sebastian works for the prime minster of 10 downing street. Got a major crush on the prime minster but i think he is to shy not to say anything. Sebastian has a problem with anybody talking actually come to think about it he has a problem with anybody looking at the prime minister and is famous for saying yeah what ever. I think that Sebastian is one of those character you either love him or hate him.

Lou and Andy done by Matt Lucas and David walliams. Lou and Andy are, you have to feel sorry for this poor man as Andy is in a wheel chair and got Lou running about doing everything for him. Andy is not actually disabled but Lou does not now this. I wonder if Lou will ever find out maybe in the next series. Andy is a very lonely man as that's why he is in a wheel chair because with Lou looking after him he has company. Andy had a career before Lou called Marie you never see her though but see does die. Andy is famous for saying yeah want that one, don' like it.

Daffyd Thomas done by Matt Lucas. Daffyd is the only gay in village does not actually like men well i don't think he does he just like to be different and never had a girlfriend or boyfriend but till claims to be gay. Dress in all latex and rubber and looks quite weird as he is very big as well. Thinks that whole community he leaves in is against gay but in actually fact their is tons of g

This is the DVDs of the first season of the popular BBC series "Little Britain" showing the amazing talents of David Walliams and Matt Lucas.

If you have not heard of Little Britain here in the UK, where have you been? Showing characters like only gay in the village Daffyd Thomas, and rubbish transvestite Emily Howard, this series takes the mickey out of lots of types of people in Britain, but going totally over the top. The humour is brilliant and a must have for anyone who has a wicked sense of humour!

I cannot in all honesty find any faults as the dvd is consistently funny throughout and well worth buying. Would highly recommend.

Having watched series 2 & 3 first, I didn't find this quite as funny, but still worth watching. Lucas & Walliams are two very talented people who have created a well loved British comedy series! I just don't know how they get away with half the things they do!

  I think my girlfriend must hate me - she bought me this
Review created: 07/02/08

OK, I may be on my own on this one, but I just don't get it. How Tom Baker was ever coerced into appearing in this annoying dross is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I love comedy - I'm a big fan of Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey amongst others. But there is something wrong with this sketch show. After all the hype surrounding Little Btitain, my girlfriend bought me a copy of this series one DVD, but it just isn't to my taste. Favourable comparisons with great British sketch shows such as Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Two Ronnies and even more recent output such as Big Train and Mitchell & Webb's recent ventures are hugely unjust - this is a show that relies mainly on tacky innuendo and cheap catchphrases. It reminds me a lot of "When the Whistle Blows", the sitcom penned by Ricky Gervais' character in Extras. Poor, poor quality.

Whilst I appreciate Matt Lucas' comedy acting - he is very versatile and definitely the best thing about this series - David Walliams seems to play the same character over and over, but with a slightly different lisp. There is a huge quantity of inventive and genuinely funny comedy out there that doesn't strive to appeal merely to the lowest common denominator - please buy something decent rather than this rubbish. I'm sure that for most prospective purchasers, my opinion will count for very little, but for those who have not seen this program and have only heard the hype - you have now been warned!

  Awkward & stupid... everything a good comedy should be!
Review created: 09/10/07

Matt Lucas and David Walliams are a big part of the reason why Little Britain is such a huge hit. Their performances are brilliant. Being as Dafydd, the only gay man in his village or the carer Lou and his wheelchair pal, Andy, this is a show that truly follows on the legacy of BritCom.

Narration is provided by former Doctor Who, Tom Baker and regular appearances by Buffy star Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy - The Vampire Slayer) as the British Prime Minister give the show the surreal touch, as you're always wondering how did they end up being part of the cast.

If you struggle to laugh with nonsense sketches and awkward situations this may not be your cup of tea. But If you're willing to give it a try you should start with Season 1.

If you enjoy British humor this one is definitely one to get.

i think we could go on about this for ages, but in a nut shell this is probable one of the best comedy sketch shows (if you can call it that),
this to me rates right up there with morecambe and wise, only fools and horses, seinfeld, everyone must own a copy of all those 3 mentioned, and ADD THIS TO THE COLLECTION
