Frank Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) is a tough, veteran Secret Service agent who has been plagued by feeling s of guilt and failure since the assassination of John F. Kennedy. As the agent on duty that fatal day, Horrigan feels that he should have reacted more quickly and taken the bullet for the President.

Thirty years later, the current President of the United States is entering a re-election campaign, and following a number of death threats, Horrigan has been called in to assist in what should be a routine research operation.

However, when he discovers that a professional assassin and master of disguise (John Malkovich) has been tracking the President, the assignment turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Leary uses his knowledge of the events in 1963 to mentally torture Horrigan in the ensuing psychological duel - a duel that will eventually put Horrigan 'In the Line of Fire'...

In the line of fire is one of my ultimate favourite films from Clint Eastwood!
I have long been a fan of Eastwood's and this film I would easily include in my top ten favourite films of his, along side the Dirty Harry films and Play misty for me.
He has made so many wonderful films in his long career and I look forward to more of the same from him in the near future!
This film is a must see for all!

  A Classic Eastwood Flick
Review created: 03/05/09

Clint Eastwood does very good in this great action thriller. The acting is good and the story is well developed. The film gets you thinking and very involved. The film has some tense moments and some interesting ones too. Great action thriller!

Plot:

Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan is a fairly successful agent working for the president, yet the guilt of not being able to save President Kennedy back in the 60's still haunts him. When a lunatic assassin named Booth aka Mitch Leary begins to haunt and torment Frank with phone calls about his failure to save Kennedy and the threats to assassinate the president, Frank must take action and protect the presidents at all costs-even if it causes him humiliation. Does Frank have what it takes to take a bullet?

Just brief review required , classic Eastwood , classy storyline , one of the truly modern masterpieces . Also probably Clint's last actioneer as an actor where he got to revive some of his on screen mastery bereft since his Harry Callaghan genre .
Truly has it all .

Intelligent and effective thriller - Clint on top form
Review created: 31/08/08

A good, edgy, politically tinged thriller that taps in to the JFK assassination mythology and works it to good dramatic effect.

The unlikely but effective pairings of Clint's hero v. John Malkovich's would-be assassin, and Clint's old and grizzled maverick cop with fresh faced and professional agent Rene Russo works wonders. The script has some great lines and the action zings along at a good pace. You can tell Clint is having great fun throughout and the various twists ensure that you're never quite certain how it's going to end up. A great conceit that pays off well.

Have watched the movie several times on Sky. Clint Eastwood is an excellent actor and we watch his movies as a family. Highly recommended for anybody who enjoy an action movie with the 'hide and seek' factor.

Clint plays his age - and it works.
Review created: 09/08/07
by:

All reviewers should come clean so I should start by saying that I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood; that does NOT mean I lap up everything he's made, there have been some real turkeys. This is one of the better films amongst the later Clint Eastwood offerings. It works because he plays a man close to his real age and is seen as vulnerable to the aging process (sruggling to keep pace with the Predidential limo, for example). It also works because of John Malkovitch's portrayal of the villain; little touches like the sniff after the slaying of Clint's partner make all the difference. The romance with the Rene Russo character is the only part of the film I find hard to treat as credible, but that's probably just a reflection of my age and the fact that it doesn't happen to me... The underpinning premise that Clint was part of Kennedy's bodyguard and failed to 'take a bullet' for him in Dallas is well handled but I'm not sure whether any of JK's bodyguard would really still be around at the time this film is set in. However if you accept this, it's a good film that deserves more than one watching, without approaching Clint's finest work.
