Album Notes
Includes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD.Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Nile Rodgers (guitar, Synclavier); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Rob Sabino (synthesizer); Bernard Edwards (bass); Tony Thompson (drums); Jimmy Bralower (programming); Curtis King, Frank Simms, George Simms, Brenda King (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). The title track, which, combined with her overt sexuality, caused waves of controversy at the time, has now become part of movie folklore, with director Quentin Tarantino letting his brutish cast mull over the meaning of its lyrics for the opening sequence of the film Reservoir Dogs. It is somehow gratifying that the Madonna album that unleashed her on the world should have become a cultural icon and reference point for the 80s. A telling blend of lush pop songs and street suss--the dancing went on all through the night. The British import CD (SIRE 925181-2) contains 1 extra track "Into The Groove" from the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack and has a running time of 43:22.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 - ...The record that propelled her into the stratosphere - and rightly so. The songs are smart, funny, sexy and irresistible...

  Classic Pop Album!!!
Review created: 08/06/07

1984, the album that turned Madonna into a Worldwide success, each track is good enough in its own right to be a single with Dress You up, Over And Over,Pretender, Stay and Shoo bee Doo been my favourite tracks!!! i love playing this on my i-Pod and it brings back great memories of my teenage years and makes me wish that the music today was as good as some of the amazing 80's bands/artists that were around then; Madonna being one of the very few artists that has remained at the forefront of the music scene and still able to make number one singles and albums....long may she remain "Queen Of Pop".

An '80s Classic for a new audience...

Us thirtysomethings might well be cynical about the re-issuing of already classic albums from our childhood, but I think Madonna deserves to be reissued every so often. She has such a huge back catalogue available that includes many different styles of popular music, so there's plenty for those who've yet to discover Madonna before the 1990s. For the New Millennium, Warners/Sire/Maverick have reissued Madonna's first three albums with original artwork and some new remixes (well two on each album actually).

Like A Virgin was/is a true pop classic, and that's not bad for a second album. Every song a bubbly, sexy, four minute ditty compiled to make an album for Girls/Women everywhere. Even the cover is ultra-feminine. Every song on the album is a potential hit so was the album itself. Well what do you expect with FIVE massive hit singles on it, the title taken from the most notorious one of all? It's hard to believe that this album actually upset Tipper Gore and her PMRC gang for being too suggestive. But maybe this was the shape of things to come as far as Madonna is concerned?

Here, the album is provided in its entirety (as per 1984 not the reissue of 1985) with two 12" remixes stuck on the end. For those of you who wonder what I mean by a "12 inch mix" - back when vinyl singles were king, they were issued on 12" as well as 7" discs. A single would then be extended/remixed to fit onto the 12" single, thus boosting sales. The remixes on these millennium reissued Madonna albums are basically extended versions of the two major singles - title track and Material Girl I think this was a bit unimaginative on the marketing side, and not an ideal way to celebrate Madonna's wealth of talent. However, it's great for those who want to delve into Madonna's past and rediscover her pop innocence. Or maybe you're a thirtysomething who just wants to rediscover your record collection on CD? Either way, this is a good place to start, and although you can't beat the orginals, this will do if you don't have the vinyl records.
