Simply the best programme that has come out of the BBC for a long time, as I was a teen in the 70’s, I was hooked straight away.

I was amazed how accurately the programme makers captured the look and language of that era.

Excellent performances from all the cast, all the characters were believable and I could associate them with people I knew/know in real life.

Some absolutely cracking one liners throughout all the episodes

Some people were disappointed with the ending (Me included) but that doe not detract from the prior episodes a definite one to watch and add to your DVD collection

Plot Summary:

Policeman DI Sam Tyler (John Simm) has an accident and awakes in 1973, as he tries to get back to his own time.

The questions you ask: Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane?

Some nice extras on this boxset

If you are going to buy both series, consider the boxset with both series, it may be more cost effective.

Best thing from the BBC in years, nothing else like it on the box, watch it and I guarantee you'll be putting in one disc after another to see what happens next. This series concluded in April 2007 on the TV and was the second and unfortunately final chapter. It's a great view of 1970's life viewed from today's perspective by the accidentally time travelling cop (or is he?). Will Sam get home or just try to solve the next case the inept Manchester CID can't manage? Great stuff.

I have to admit I was surprised to recieve an email from Ebay asking me to review this purchase!
The seller was actually a fraudster and took my money but never sent any goods, he/she has also taken money from several other purchasers and failed to send them goods or even an explanation.
I would also note that Ebay have not helped me get my money back and its only because I paid through Paypal that I was able to get a refund via the Resolution Centre, although it is annoying that my refund is minus the fees paid originally and the fees incurred to return the money to my account!

I have now managed to acquire Life on Mars Series 2 from another source. I am not sure what advice I can give people to be wary about fraudsters because I saw nothing unusual!

Life On Mars - Series 2 - PERFECT!!!
Review created: 03/07/07(updated 03/07/07)

The acting was good. The sets were good. What particularly impressed me, however, was the understated way that this show handled the entire "Stranger in a strange land" aspect of this show. The viewer (mostly) was not preached at. There was very little attempt to judge one era or the other. Sam and Gene had their own successful methods and, though they clashed, they also built on each other.

It was also interesting to see that British policing went through "issues" similar to those in American policing at about the same time. I also very much enjoyed the cars. At that time, the two countries were much more different culturally than they are now. The cars were a great expression of that. Most of these cars were never seen in America.

Its a fantastic series and it's a shame to see it go - although finishing at the top is always a good idea. However, I've also noticed the change in the score for episode four and am a bit surprised they did it. The mood is altered completely and the people who are seeing this for the first time will never appreciate it the way we were able to the first time around.

You will perhaps get once a decade a show which will gain classic iconic status. For the begining of the 21st century life on mars takes this accolade. This is a truely original, powerful and funny drama which i have no doubt will stand the test of time and will still be as well known in 30 years. Brilliant acting, clever, witty writing this show has set the benchmark for future television drama.

Overall quite simply, the finest TV programme I have watched in the last 20 years. Marvellous. Take my word for it and buy both Seasons. You will not be disappointed.

Enjoy.

Life on Mars - Series 2
Review created: 18/06/07

Series One was, for me, one of the best TV series of 2006, so I looked forward to Series Two. I was not disappointed. The series featured the same format as the first one - what has happened to DI Sam Tyler (the excellent John Simm)? Again, the drama and comedy of his relationship with Gene Hunt (the equally excellent Phillip Glenister) form the centrepiece of this series.

Matters start to resolve themselves in the penultimate episode, with the appearance of DCI Frank Morgan, from Hyde - a place of great importance in Life on Mars.

I found the ending brilliant, although some found it non-PC and disturbing; I won't spoil it for you!

Overall, a great programme that didn't out stay its welcome (Series One and Two is your lot, I'm afraid).

David Goodes.

i was hooked on the first series and thought the story line immense. The story follows a detective named Sam Tyler who was involved in a car accident and transported back in time to the 70's. You are unaware as to whether Sam is in a coma in present day and dreaming the 70's or is he really there in some weird way? series 2 provides that answer. The series starts with the same great pace and episodes that were left in series 1 but series 2 goes so much deeper and furthur into the story. Some of the episodes in series 2 are fantastic and i really cant praise the program enough. I feel that it would spoil the series by telling you what happens or the pieces that i enjoyed the most - you simply have to see this program. Gene Hunt, Sam's boss in the 70's is a wonderfully funny character and the repor between Sam and Gene is priceless. Sam faces so many problems and dilemma's and the last 4 or so episodes will have you begging to know more. A real gem of a series that i would highly reccommend to anyone.

Superb in every detail a classic series
Review created: 25/05/09

Life on Mars is a British science fiction and police drama television series. It was first broadcast on BBC One between January 2006 and April 2007.

The programme tells the story of DCI Sam Tyler of the Greater Manchester Police (played by John Simm), who, after being hit by a car in 2006, finds himself in the year 1973. There, he works for Manchester and Salford Police CID as a DI under DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister). Over the course of the series, Tyler faces various culture clashes, most frequently regarding the differences between his modern approach to policing and the more traditional methods of his colleagues. Mixing the genres of science fiction and police procedural, the series centres on the ambiguity concerning Tyler's predicament: it is unclear whether he is insane, in a coma, or if he really has travelled back in time.

Rough and racy, Phillip Glenister excels as Gene Hunt in the second series.
Compulsive viewing, watched the lot in two evenings
Only negative, a few too many flashbacks but didnt spoil my enjoyment

Follow it up with Ashes to Ashes

Having enjoyed series one which was a xmas gift just had to get series two. Brilliantly written capturing the attitudes of the period together with some excellent performances from Gene Hunt played by Phil Glenister and a comic duo in Dean Andrews & Marshall Lancaster. In fact I enjoyed it so much had to get the sequel Ashes to Ashes which is also a must buy....

Life on Mars - Series 2
Review created: 07/02/09

Science fiction, crime drama, mis-matched buddy show; Life on Mars is all this and more. Detective Sam Tyler is hit by a car and awakes in 1973! He works with the cops of that era as he tries to find a way back.

This show may sound strange, but it is great! The writing and acting combine to create a truly original show. If you were alive during the 70's it will bring back memories (hopefully good).I wish it had more than two series. I am hoping the American version lasts longer, but who knows?

I definitely recommend this show, though it is definitely NOT something you'd want to watch with the little ones (language mainly-brief nudity).
