Is Mika the Next Freddie?
Review created: 25/04/07

On November 24th 1991, Rock Legend Freddie Mercury died. Undoubtedly, he was the best singer and entertainer the Music Industry had seen, the World mourned, never, would there be another Singer or Entertainer like Freddie until now!

Then on 21 January 2007, Mika hit the Charts with Grace Kelly (which has a mention of Freddie) knocking Leona Lewis from the No 1 slot, ending her 4 week reign.

His debut Album, Mika-Life in Cartoon Motion, is 'a must listen to'. An album that can be listened to over and over. Filled with songs that you can't help but sing along to.

So, where does Freddie Mercury fit into all this. Buy the album, listen to the songs and you will find the answer. Mika has Freddie's vocal range to the point that you can actually visualise Mika performing It's a Kind of Magic.

I'm not saying that he is better than Freddie, what I am saying, is that, every so often a Singer comes along and blows your socks off with their singing and entertaining ability. Rock Legend Freddie did just that.

There was a void when he died. Nobody in the years after could come remotely close until now - Mika.

Some great tracks but badly sequenced
Review created: 07/05/07

This album suffers from a terrible sequencing. I don't know who decides on the track orders of artist's albums, whether it is the artist themselves or the record company but out of all the albums I have heard, this one suffers the most.

There are some fantastic pop tunes on here, Grace Kelly, Love Today, Big Girl (You are Beautiful)being the standouts. There are also some lovely, more staightforward ballads. The problem is that in the current order, the album jumps all over the place, leaving no chance to sustain any emotional contact with the content. Particularly poor is the placement of My Interpretation so early on. Coming as it does after Lollipop is schizophrenic to say the least! This can work on some albums, but here it doesn't.

Another gripe is the burying of the album's most emotionally affecting song as a hidden track. I can see why this was done, but it is a real shame.

If you like Grace Kelly and Love Today then the album is worth investigating. It is fantastic fun. This would be my preferred track listing (ah, the joys of sequencing!)

Grace Kelly
Lollipop
Love Today
Big Girl (You are Beautiful)
Relax (Take it Easy)
Stuck in the Middle
Ring Ring
Billy Brown
My Interpretation
Any Other World
Happy Ending

Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion CD - Released 2007

Received as a gift for my birthday having mentioned I liked Grace Kelly, Life in Cartoon Motion, far surpassed any expect ions.

It seems pretty unbelievable that 12 months ago no one had heard of Mika, then Grace Kelly exploded onto the music scene. With 11 tracks on this CD, it is far too short for my liking, and I sincerely can not wait for the next Mika CD, having heard this CD, I would gladly and happily go and see him perform live

Mika on this CD has combined a number of musical styles - all of which feel as fluid and comfortable as the last.

The first track is Grace Kelly, which led to Mika's cult Gay following, then the second track is uptempo with a corking beat called Lollipop.... I dare not put the lyrics on here, but it is so very very catchy do not be surprised if every under 10 year old will know the lyrics if it is released as a chart single...! It has a catchy bit in the middle which is sung by a child - can't say too much without giving it away - just listen!

Billy Brown, another track on the CD is absolutely corking, about a man and his conventional life, who fell in love with another man, an absolute scream.

The fourth Track is the very popular "Everybody's going to Love today" catchy and upbeat and again a totally different Genre from anything else on the album.

Of course this CD includes a track, which has to be one of my favourites Big Girl you are beautiful, an anthem for any woman who feel's pressured to lose weight - why bother!

I would heartily recommend this as a great stocking filler for anyone with a sense of fun, it is a very entertaining CD,

:)

Happy listening
Suz xx

WOW, what can i say? i bought the album after hearing a few demos of "love today" and "grace kelly" and the guy is great. Went to see him live in manchester and can honestly say he sounds more like Freddy M of Queen live then on the album. The songs are great and energetic, it has some real feel good songs on the album too. And one of the hidden bonus tracks is sung better then a chior boy, honestly a great singer and alot differnt than much of the pop-indie scene at the moment, worth buying!

This guy has a talent, there is no disputing that, and i have to admit i do like some of his stuff, however at the beginning his songs were over played, if i haven't listened to him for a while, i quite enjoying hearing a few tracks, or if it randomly comes up ont ipod, however to listen to it constantly in the car, on a journey or day to day, drives you bloody bonkers, so its great as an ipod filler as the random hearing of a song makes you enjoy it, but not every day... IN A NUT SHELL, 3 OUT OF 5

(IF THI HELPS PLEAS PRESS YES)

this is a wonderful CD. i have listed to it near on 200 times since i bought it a couple of months ago
my kids love this as well and it is very difficult to find something that appeals to me, an 8 year old, a 5 year old and a 1 year, but Mika managed it.
its very feel good, and puts you in a cheerful mood when you listen to it. I agree with many others that if you like scissor sisters or queen then this should appeal, i also know people that dont like them though and still love this CD.
i normally dislike buying albums as i find i only like half the tracks, however, this is completely different and i like every song on it.
his vocal range is very good and his songs just seem to strike something in you. I also find his songs great to do the cleaning, or just to sing along to.
i think this is a great addition to any collection, and one that will be listened to many times.
i cannot wait for his next album to be brought out now.......

This has to be one of the top feel good albums of 2007. It includes tracks that are upbeat like Grace Kelly, Love Today. Children of all ages will enjoy (in my opinion his next hit) Lollipop. I love it, my children love it. It's an album that can be played over and over again. Learn the words sing along! I wouldn't feel embarassed to blast this out of the car. Mika has cleverly managed to fit bits of other top artists into his music with vocals sounding like Freddie Mercury. A compilation of great music. Dont take my word for it just buy it!

I didnt read any other reviews before writing this and Have edited this to say how I now see others see the Queen / Freddie connection.
Review as I wrote it below.

Sounds to me a bit like a cross between Queen and the Sissor Sisters!!

Ok Tis funky and catchy but the 'Grace Kelly' track is well annoying.
Kids like this CD more than I do but I prefer the Clash. LOL.

Here is my review of each track as thay appear on the cd.

Grace Kelly. Annoying

Lollipop. Hate this one.

My Interpretation. Ok ish but samey all the way through.

Love Today. This is the one I like, Sissor Sisters sound alike IMHO.

Relax. Nice song this one, quite easy on the ears.

Any Other World. Very Gentle this one.

Billy Brown. Reminds me of a mixture of Queen and a kids 70's tv show for some reason.

Big Girls (You are Beautiful). My Son loves this the most, quite true the lyrics on this one.:-)

Stuck in the Middle. Ummm a bit in the middle between ok and bouncy.

Happy Ending. Dramatic (in a way) R&B (in a way) on the whole not my cup of tea.

Ring Ring. Doesn't seem to be the right song for the music, sounds a bit weird.

So in all ok for a 8 year old girls present but give me The Clash any day.

Mike is certainly a true entertainer and there are / have been very few. Mika can put himself up there with the greats of Freddie and Robbie!!

This album is full of feel good music and is bursting with energy..!

After buying this Album I had to go and see Mika, he is beyond words can descibe...

I would recommend this Album to anyone who loves music and really appreciates a truly talented person..Not only can he write the songs and sing them he can also play them brilliantly!! The whole support band are fantastic and set the icing on the cake showing him off to perfection.

This is also the only album I have bought that I love every song on it!! Buy it today!!

 Mika's album
Review created: 05/08/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Being a somewhat jaded father and husband tipping 50, Mika does not at first sight become an obvious choice for my average record, or should I say CD, collection. However after seing him perform on, I think it was Diannas concert, or one of those recent gigs, my daughter was most upset at my humming along. She did try to explain that some of the lyrics were somewhat dubious and not what you would like to explain to a maiden aunt! but the tunes were great.
I consequently had a look on ebay, as you do, to see if he had an album, he did! How could I not buy this? Well I hear you all say, EASY! but dont judge too quickly. It is now my current favourite cd to listen to in the car, mostly on my own, but not due to the CD! To the proboble annoiance of other motorists the do not see me picking my nose in traffic jams but if the could lip read then would wonder why I am singing about Lolipops and rather large women!
Its great and makes you feel young?
